This report deals with the introduction and implementation of EMI (English-medium instruction) in bachelor degree programmes at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). Highlighting the legal and political situation of universities of applied sciences, the study reports the results of qualitative interviews with stakeholders in different bachelor programmes of the eight departments of the university. The study asks the overarching question whether English-medium instruction can be considered a viable option in the planning of future courses in the university. Following an introduction to the basic problems and the specific situation universities of applied sciences find themselves in, semi-structured interviews conducted with course directors and stakeholders at Zurich University of Applied Sciences will be analysed and presented in detail. These interviews provide a first overview of the concrete use of English and the problems connected to university teaching at bachelor level. The report concludes with concrete recommendations to the university management. ; This report deals with the introduction and implementation of EMI (English-medium instruction) in bachelor degree programmes at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). This book, which emerges in the context of the European research network LINEE (Languages in a Network of European Excellence), is concerned with European multilingualism both as a political concept and as a social reality. It features cutting-edge studies by linguists and anthropologists who perceive multilingualism as a discursive phenomenon which can be revealed and analyzed through empirical fieldwork. The book presents a fresh perspective of European multilingualism as it takes the reader through key themes of social consciousness-identity, policy, education, economy- and relevant societa
Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) in Switzerland have been developing strong international profiles in recent years, aiming to make themselves attractive partners on the international higher education market. This move towards internationalisation of teaching has led to the implementation of manifold curricular structures and policies that offer support to and reward both teachers and students involved in international higher education contexts. While these structures and policies undoubtedly have their local merits, no overarching quality guidelines have been established to date that provide higher education institutions with concrete parameters they should aim for when implementing international profiles in their programmes. In the present study, we examine decision-making in higher education with regard to English-Medium Instruction (EMI) quality measures. This is carried out by investigating the perspectives of programme directors (hereafter referred to as PDs) in a major Swiss university of applied sciences. These actors have decisional authority regarding the introduction of measures with respect to EMI at the programme level, but are also part of the higher-level institutional culture where institution-wide or inter-institutional measures can be introduced. Specifically, the present study examines PDs' attitudinal repertoires and department-specific factors that impact their attitudes towards the potential introduction of EMI quality measures in their study programmes. The findings of this paper contribute to a broader understanding of stakeholder perceptions of EMI quality in higher education, for the purpose of developing sustainable programmes of EMI quality assurance.
