Mountain environments have long been the place and target of so-called partnership research policies, which focus on approaches to co-build research issues between development actors, professionals and scientists. Research into the French dairy sectors in the Alps and the Jura is exemplary to this situation. Taking the example of dairy microbiology and the emergence of the concept of 'microbial terroir' in the Alps and the Jura, I propose in this article that the following question be answered: how do we produce knowledge in the Alpine context? In the first part, I will present the different forms taken by this collaborative research since the 1960s. In a second part, I will show how the concept of 'microbial terroir' has emerged within these research systems, and I will develop the idea that such participatory research remains a minority form of development of microbiology knowledge. I will base this work on an analysis of the reflex literature published by these various research projects, as well as on scientometric analyses and archive work carried out between 2016 and 2020 in the Northern Alps. ; Les environnements de montagne sont de longue date le lieu et la cible de politiques de recherches dites partenariales, qui privilégient des approches en co-construction de problématiques de recherche, entre acteurs du développement, professionnels et scientifiques. Over the past two decades, a number of digital platforms have been developed with the aim of engaging citizens in scientific research projects. The success of these platforms depends in no small part on their ability to attract and retain participants, turning diffuse crowds of users into active and productive communities. This article investigates how the collectives of online citizen science are formed and governed, and identifies two ideal-types of government, either based on self-interest or on universal norms of science. Based on an ethnography of three citizen science platforms and a series of interviews with their managers, we show how different technologies – rhetorical, of the self, social, and ontological – can be diversely combined to configure these collectives. We suggest that the shift from individual projects to platforms is a defining moment for online citizen science, during which the technologies that sustain the collectives are standardized and automatized in ways that make the crowd appear to be a natural community.

AbstractAfter a decade of efforts to mainstream Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) across Europe, the policy momentum is now uncertain. We explore how 217 organisations perceive responsibility in relation to their work, what mechanisms they apply to promote responsible practices, and what hindrances to promoting RRI they observe. Most organisations are unfamiliar with RRI but employ diverse perceptions of responsibility and mechanisms to promote it nonetheless. Civil society organisations are primarily outward oriented; collaborating with others and hosting science events. Private companies are more internally focussed and more likely to formalise this effort in strategies and internal guidelines. Universities resemble private companies, while private and public funders use funding-specific tools to incentivise responsible practices. Our results suggest that RRI is still poorly institutionalised and that some areas lack attention among actors in the research and innovation systems. Future policy endeavours might benefit from addressing deficits and tapping into existing perceptions of responsibility.
