In Belgium, free choice of the school, and in particular here of the University, is guaranteed by the Constitution, from the Independence of Belgium, in a historical context of opposition between the Catholic and the secular political forces. Moreover, identical public funding of all the universities leads to a geography of the recruitment areas of these institutions developed in a (quasi-free) supply side market. Among the big Universities (Louvain and Ghent on the Flemish side ;Louvain-la-Neuve, Brussels and Liege on the French-speaking side), both Catholic institutions (KUL and UCL) show the most ubiquitous recruitment pattern ;they can base it everywhere on the networks of the Catholic secondary schools. However, this ubiquitousness is decreasing, in relation with the democratisation of the university studies, a fading of the philosophical determinations in the choice of the students and the dynamic growth of smaller Universities, developing proximity recruitment areas. The paper studies the evolution of the geographical patterns of the student's recruitment areas from 1980-1981 and ends with a prospective, developing strengths and weaknesses of the Universities concerning their recruitment during the next decade. ; SCOPUS: re.j ; info:eu-repo/semantics/published

; The geography of the European electoral patterns (here those of the Left) can surely not be understood without taking into consideration the national political histories. The spatial patterns are not at all mechanistic reflections of the present regional class structures. Social mediations, nationally and regionally embedded, are strong determinants of these spatial patterns and explain, through complex hystereses, their relative permanences, even when the class structures and the economic basis of the regions, as well as the political positions of the parties, have known dramatic changes. Even if some trends appear towards more homogenization of the electoral maps at the national levels, regional contrasts remain, often only explainable by these inherited determinants.

; In the Belgian federal Kingdom, the small Brussels-Capital urban Region is politically cut from its metropolitan hinterland. This separation implies not only problems for using their own language for the French-speaking inhabitants in the Flemish periphery, but prevents also any organic co-operation between the central city and the outer parts of the metropolitan area. The consequences of this situation are yet worsened by a local and regional tax-system more based on the asset of the resident population than on the economic activity. The political responses are very uneasy to find, Flanders in particular considering its regional limit as an unnegotiable State boundary.
