With the Rugby World Cup in France a few months away, fans of the "oval ball" are starting to get understandably excited. This "beastly game played by gentlemen" as the adage goes, was born in posh British schools, but quickly spread around the world. It first traveled to France, introduced by English merchants, before finding a truly enthusiastic welcome in the southern Hemisphere, from South Africa to New Zealand. In this part of the world, political issues are sometimes more important than the sport. Colonialism, the struggle against apartheid, French nuclear testing in the Pacific.. .diplomacy has been drawn into the scrum on more than one occasion. Things have changed considerably, though. Having rapidly embraced greater professionalism, rugby has gone global in its own manner. The sport has become much more market savvy, but also more sanitized. Whether this is cause for complaint or satisfaction is open to debate.... Adapted from the source document.
