This paper analyces two questions with the purpose to understand the behaviour of the Catholic Church in Guatemala during the Década Revolucionaria. First, the weakness of the Church (a institution without economical resources; without priest; etc.) promoted by the liberal revolution and ideological doctrinarianism of the 1945 movement; and second, the fear of the catholic group originated in the political mobilization fomented by the government of the Revolution. ; Este trabajo intenta comprender el comportamiento de la Iglesia católica en Guatemala durante la Década Revolucionaría considerando dos elementos que lo condicionaron claramente: la debilidad de la Iglesia (falta de medios económicos, escasez de sacerdotes, desamparo jurídico, etc.) provocada por el triunfo liberal y agravada por la intransigencia ideológica de los sectores revolucionarios y el miedo que entre los sectores eclesiásticos difundió la movilización que provoca, entre otras cosas, un incremento de las tensiones entre los sacerdotes y sus feligreses.

The paper holds that spatial social segregation in the cities of Mexico goes back at least as far as the citiesfounded in Nueva España. From such times onwards both Society and the space it inhabits have undergoneimportant structural changes, the charting through time of these giving us a picture of the transformationsurban morphology has gone through to date. The on-going urge to split up the city from within by means ofinternal boundary lines is here seen to explain the appearance of walled residential estates set downregardless in outlying zones assailed by burgeoning poverty. These utopia tailored to the dreams of the eliteand thus of the middling sort bring with them giant undertakings and commercial zones which likewise battenup that which is public while re-carving up the body politic of the host city. In the light of these considerationsthe author finds himself faced by a series of questions the answering of which and possible lines of investigationspring from which would, perhaps, lead on to the formulating of new, open city models that would be allincluding,friendly rational environments. ; La segregación socioespacial tiene en las ciudades mexicanas una larga historia que por lo menosse remonta a los núcleos fundacionales de la Nueva España. A partir de ahí se han registrado importantescambios estructurales en la sociedad y en el espacio habitado, cuyo seguimiento histórico revela lastransformaciones en la morfología urbana. El continuismo en la experiencia del urbanismo separatista ingeniadomediante la elaboración de fronteras interiores enmarca la reciente proliferación de unidades residencialesbardeadas, pertrechadas ostentosamente en amplias periferias de pobreza creciente. La utopía comunitariaa la medida de las élites, y por extensión de las clases medias, está acompañada de intervencionestales como megaproyectos y centros comerciales, observando la misma tendencia de privatización del espaciopúblico al tiempo que redefinen la articulación del tejido urbano. Estas reflexiones sugieren interrogantesy líneas de trabajo con la intención de indagar formas urbanísticas abiertas, amables, incluyentes, ambientalmenteracionales.

Explores the influence of fear on the levels of internal & external sensibility & tolerance of the interethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia, positing that the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia & external responses resulted from real, possible, exaggerated, & imaginary fears. The US misunderstood the intra- & interethnic fears, became entangled in the conflict, & interfered with, rather than helped, its resolution. Terror Management Theory, based on the ideas of Ernest Becker, suggests that the fear of death is universal. When forced to think about the possibility of one's own death, the first response is denial & deferral. Next, after this impulse has passed, defensive behavior is invoked that usually involves shoring up one's cultural worldview & one's self-esteem. It also involves derogation of other beliefs leading to prejudice, discrimination, & even to murderous acts. This paper briefly recounts Terror Management Theory & supporting evidence. It attempts to draw parallels between the behavior of individuals whose unconscious death anxiety has been raised through a "mortality salience" manipulation to the behavior of authoritarian persons. There is little direct evidence, but there seem to be ample reasons to believe that the authoritarian personality is particularly sensitive to threats of death. 30 References.
