The article considers the peculiarities of the nation stereotype functioning in the novel Notes of a Ukrainian Madman by Lina Kostenko. In the focus of the analysis are the basic concepts (the nation, the people, Ukrainians, the state, a society), by means of which the author's stereotype of the Ukrainian nation is revealed. A set of evaluative nominations that construct a model of the nation stereotype has been established. The greatest number of epithets refers to the lexeme nation. They create a nominative field of the author's stereotype and express mostly negative connotations. The study has revealed that the expression of the author's model of the stereotype is the image of the protagonist as a representative of the society of the Ukrainians, living in the XX-XXI centuries, whose communicative behavior demonstrates an evaluative attitude to his people. Evaluative nominations that construct a model of national stereotype in the text of the novel are mostly endowed with negative connotations and high expressiveness. The usage features of various linguistic and stylistic means, metaphorical techniques, as well as occasionalisms, loanwords, ethnonymes in the author's representation of the Ukrainian nation are analyzed. Verbalization of the image of Ukraine is carried out by means of syntactic constructions of monologue, dialogue, and quotation. The factors that could influence the individual perception and reproduction of the nation stereotype in the literary text are identified. The author's stereotype in the analyzed work appears not idealized, but, due to the individual experience of the writer, social and political factors, critically considered. Prospects for further research on national stereotypes in linguistics concern the development of the criteria for selecting factual material, texts of various functional styles and genres, as well as the comparative study of the specifics of modeling stereotypes, their verbalization and dynamics in the works of different writersю ; У статті розглянуто особливості функціонування національного стереотипу в романі Ліни Костенко «Записки українського самашедшого»; здійснено аналіз основних концептуальних понять, що моделюють авторський стереотип української нації; акцентовано увагу на різноманітті мовностилістичних засобів актуалізації характерних ознак українців. Встановлено комплекс оцінних номінацій, що конструюють модель національного стереотипу. Визначено чинники, що могли вплинути на індивідуальне сприйняття і відтворення автостереотипу в художньому тексті.

Linguistic stylistics explores the linguistic features of a text; it is primarily concerned with the use of language and its effect in a text. This study is aimed at analyzing the language structure/system of Wole Soyinka's 'Night' and 'Death in the Dawn' to render a linguistic description, that is, identifying the linguistic deviant features of Soyinka's poems and describing how they deviated from the known rules to create effect. Some aspects of Niazi & Gautam's (2010) framework, as well as Onwukwe's (2012) concept of foregrounded irregularities at the lexical, syntactic and semantic levels were adopted in the analysis of the data collected from a selection of deviant words and structures in the poems. Findings reveal that the syntactic level has the most deviant structures while the lexical level has the least deviant lexemes and that the language system of Wole Soyinka's poems deviated in ways that make words: violate the class to which they originally belong, inflect words which do not require inflections, create compounds not seen in the lexicon of the language, make structures violate the selectional restriction and category rule and give rise to figurative language. In conclusion, the choice of words in a literary work is very important as it creates certain effects on the readers of that work which is what Soyinka accomplished by deviating from the known linguistic norms. This research hopes to contribute to the understanding of Soyinka's poems and serve as a reference point for scholars who wish to carry out a similar research.
The scientific article presents a study of the ways of expressing manipulation in politics, which is performed in English political discourse by means of language. Carefully selected language units, used by politicians in public speaking, in combination with social factors, can be a powerful instrument for managing public opinion, i.e. manipulation. The authors analyze public speeches delivered by English politicians. Manipulation is an integral part of American political discourse, all speech strategies of which are aimed at one purpose: to influence a recipient, persuade him or her to make a decision that will be beneficial for a politician. The article considers the main strategies, tactics and types of manipulation used in the modern political sphere. An analysis of public speeches of English politicians proves the importance of speech manipulative techniques for successful achievement of political goals.

The author of the given article analyzes linguistic means of conducting a modern information war. The study is based on the material of American and British printed media and their online versions The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Economist, The Guardian, The Telegraph, as well as the internet-resources of the TV channel BBC News highlighting mainly the Russian-American relations and the situation in Syria and Ukraine. The analysis results make it possible to identify various linguistic techniques and means used by the Western mass media as instruments of manipulat-ing mass consciousness and also show that the main aim of information aggression consists in purposive disinformation of the audience and promotion of a certain idea meant to produce ideological impact on the audience and to achieve the desired geopolitical goals. It is linguo-stylistic analysis of the foreign English-speaking press that acquires special importance in this context. One of the main tasks of the author of any material in the press is to create an unusual sensational headline; that is why headlines often produce manipulative impact upon the emotions of the reader (the most typical methods include: emo-tional-evaluative phraseologisms, hyperbole and metaphor. ; В данной статье на материале американских и британских СМИ приводится лингвистический анализ языковых средств ведения современной информационной войны.

A Day in the News is the linguistic description of a single day in the life of the British press – Wednesday, 19 August 2015. Employing a variety of tools and methods – from multimodality to pragmatics, from close reading to computational stylistics – Morini looks at nine different «journalistic worlds» and their respective «Newsspeaks». The results are often revealing: by providing its readers with an accurate idea of the universe projected by each paper, this study revises many received ideas on the clear-cut boundaries separating «popular» from «highbrow» journalism. In the process, A Day in the News also sums up more than three decades of work on the language of newspapers, and provides a general analytical method for journalism in the digital age. The three chapters of the book focus, respectively, on the multimodal features of newspapers and their e-editions; on the quantitative prominence accorded to certain wordings and topics in each newspaper; and on the ideological/evaluative slant with which news items are presented and commented. Throughout, the focus is not on some outmoded notion of journalistic style, but on the degrees of proximity or distance presupposed by different formats, layouts and linguistic registers

One of our most valuable capacities is our ability partly to predict what will come next in a text. But linguistic understanding of this remains very limited, especially in genres such as the short story where there is a staging of the clash between predictability and unpredictability. This book proposes that a matrix of narrativity-furthering textual features is crucial to the reader's forming of expectations about how a literary story will continue to its close. Toolan uses corpus linguistic software and methods, and stylistic and narratological theory, in the course of delineating the matrix of eight parameters that he sees as crucial to creating narrative progression and expectation. --From publisher's description.

The article is a continuation of the analysis of the peculiarities of transcultural prose writing in Finland (part 1). In the previous article, the concept of transcultural literature was considered and alliteration as an artistic and expressive means was analyzed. The purpose of this article is to identify and describe the stylistic features of the novel. The subject of the study are metaphors, allusions, repetitions, some syntactic means, namely the preferred use of homogeneous subordination, even though homogeneous adjuncts are connected by means of syndetic or asyndetic coordination. This way of connecting subordinate clauses gives the text a lilt and rhythm. The article examines cultural phenomena and facts, episodes significant for the lyrical subject. They do not always have a universal character; they may even seem deformed from the point of view of a huge cultural community. Transculturality in the work is manifested at the points of intersection of cultures, when the heroine compares the traditions, behavior, lifestyle of Egyptians and Finns. ElRamly uses color vocabulary because of its high communicative potential. Color nominations act as a means of conveying emotions, emotional experiences of the character. They are an integral part of the individual author's picture of the world. The methodological basis of the research is a transnational approach to cultural phenomena. The main research methods are the method of motivic analysis, the method of intertextual analysis, the method of linguistic description of specific linguistic facts.

The article deals with the main tendencies of modern British newspaper language addressed to readers with different background. Comparing texts in «quality» newspapers and «middlebrow» tabloids allows to reveal linguistic means differing according to social audiences.
Introduction: Modern metaphors enable speakers to transform the designation of new realities and the understandings of the modern colorful social and political life of Ukraine into certain bright signs not only of such particular objects, but sometimes of the entire situations connected with them. They reflect the mood of society, communicate the attitude of speakers to certain realities and the phenomena of the present, and make their assessment. Their valuation is due to the sphere of functioning.Purpose: To analyze metaphors that reflect the mood of modern society, communicate the attitude of speakers to the realities and phenomena of the present, and draw up their assessment. Methods: According to the research material in the scientific studies, the following methods are used: descriptive (linguistic techniques of observation and generalization), component analysis method, the method of contextual analysis and the method of comparative analysis. Results: Analysis of the development of political metaphors convinces that this is not a short-term means for the need for time, but a kind of resource that has already entered the vocabulary of the language. The use of a political metaphor indicates the desire of the speakers to renew the expressive means, which is consistent with their constructive principle of leaving the stamp.Originality: Metaphor- the transfer of the designation of one object to another to create the image of the latter - it is also important in that which distinguishes in the near reality the things with which the Ukrainians compare and contrast certain concepts, phenomena, realities, events, certain persons and subjects of political life of the state. This testifies to the active, topical areas of the language system and the conceptual picture of the Ukrainian world, which needs new meanings. Conclusion: The prospect of further scientific research is seen in the study of the modern political metaphor in the journalistic text, the definition of the expression of its figurative notation.

The overall success of international conferences depends on how their participants understand the need to bring their own priorities, values and goals in line with the priorities, values and goals of others; readiness to harmonize their national stance, and to convincingly express it through their speeches. Informing about the stance of their state on a particular issue and urging the effectiveness of the proposed method solution; supporting or criticizing partners' stance, participants of an international conference seek to influence partners' consciousness and make changes in the system of their needs, interests, values and priorities. This goal cannot be achieved using only rational means and methods of influence (e.g. logical and rational arguments), disregarding means and methods influencing the emotional sphere of consciousness. The diversity and complexity of issues under discussion (national, religious, political, etc.) as well as specific character of relationships between the participants of the conference (e.g. the degree of mutual confrontation) frequently make speeches more or less emotional. This article examines the role of the emotional component in public persuasive speech and linguistic means forming and regulating the degree of speech emotional expressiveness. © 2017 Serials Publications.
