"The establishment and evolution of political parties in the United States can be more than a little confusing to today's students. This anthology of essays offers a diverse array of perspectives that explore political parties in America. What purpose do political parties serve? Do they encourage corruption? Why are there only two major parties, and is that why the country is so divided? Given today's volatile political climate, can the United States come together and transcend party politics? Viewpoints written by experts in the field attempt to address these questions, while chapter prefaces and viewpoint introductions provide context"--

THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE AUTHOR'S VIEW OF "THE NEW POLITICS." THE AUTHOR BELIEVES THAT THE FIRST THING PEOPLE NEED TO DO IS ADMIT THAT THEY DON'T REALLY KNOW VERY MUCH. SECOND, THE AUTHOR BELIEVES THAT JOY AND LABOR ARE NOT SEPARABLE THINGS. THE AUTHOR ALSO BELIEVES THAT THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE THAN WE IMAGINE, AND THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT THE NEW POLITICS ARISE OUT OF THIS AWARENESS. THE AUTHOR ALSO BELIEVES THAT THE NEW POLITICS IS NEW BECAUSE IT IS INNOVATIVE AND ARRESTING, AND BECAUSE IT CHALLENGES ALL THE ASSUMPTIONS WE MAKE ABOUT OURSELVES AND OTHERS. THE NEW POLITICS IS ALSO ABOUT REVOLUTION; IT IS OPTIMISTIC. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES BY DIRECTING THE PUBLIC TO REFUSE TO BELIEVE IN THE TRADITIONAL STRUCTURES OF MADNESS, AND TO JUST SAY NO.

Ironic reflections are offered on the emergence of new forms of political awareness & expression in GB, with reference to the atmosphere of the 24 July 1994 protest march & rally against the Criminal Justice Bill. It is suggested that the new politics in GB is innovative & arresting, not only because of its eclecticism, but also because it challenges the assumptions Britains often make about themselves & others. The relationship between GB's new politics & the protest politics of the 1960s is discussed, & it is concluded that the new politics turn on a new kind of political spirituality that embraces the ideas of freedom, self-empowerment, personal expression, & the right to "party.". "Considered the "gold standard" of political parties texts, this new, eighteenth edition of Party Politics in America moves its comprehensive and authoritative coverage into the age of deepened partisan conflict, expanded presidential power, and global health threats. Marjorie Hershey builds on the book's three-pronged coverage of party organization, party in the electorate, and party in government and integrates important developments in racial politics, social media use, and battles over access to the vote. The book uses contemporary examples to bring to life the fascinating story of how parties shape our political system. New to the eighteenth edition: Fully updated through the 2020 election, including changes in virtually all of the boxed materials, the chapter openings, and the data presented. Examines the impact of the Trump presidency on the Republican Party's supporting coalition and issue positions, changes in party and ideological polarization, and the return to the world of campaign finance of "interested money" from big (and often anonymous) donors. Explores political attitudes and voter turnout among college-age and other young voters in light of dramatic changes in American politics and the economy. Expanded online Instructor's Resources, including author-written test banks, essay questions, relevant websites with correlated sample assignments, the book's appendix, and links to a collection of course syllabi"--
