Lena Bader reports on "Plural Temporalities: Theories and Practices of Time," the fourth Transregional Academy of the German Center for Art History (DFK Paris), which took place in Bogotá from 24 September to 2 October 2022. It was organized in co-operation with the Universidad de los Andes and the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome (BHMPI) and with the support of the Forum Transregionale Studien.

This post considers the latest episode of Australia's engagement with civil disobedience under its constitutionally 'implied freedom of political communication' — Kvelde v New South Wales ('Kvelde'). In Kvelde a judge of the New South Wales Supreme Court followed the tendency of some High Court judges of reducing the democratic value of civil disobedience to binary terms: if a form of political speech is already illegal, the Court will not engage with further legislative acts seeking to increase penalties for it. I describe this as the 'binary approach.' I argue that the binary approach reflects a particular judicial theory of political change not necessarily prescribed by the freedom, that is also out of step with historical Australian political practices.

The intensifying systemic rivalry between great powers also involves contesting the most effective approaches to conflict resolution and mediation. The most recent Beijing-mediated détente between Saudi Arabia and Iran has ignited heated debates regarding its longevity and China's rising profile in the region. While the Middle East may still be a region largely inhospitable to outsider mediation, there are three good reasons why Beijing's latest foray into Middle East peace diplomacy may be effective. The article argues that China's hitherto successful mediation between Saudi and Iran lies in its power of not using power—the ability to leverage its growing geoeconomic influence while refraining from the use of coercive power in regional affairs. This approach aims at providing an alternative approach to external powers' engagement in Middle East peace affairs.
