; The dissertation examines the professional biography of Bauhaus student, architect and designer Herbert Hirche in the context of the ideas, the institutions and the network of the Deutscher Werkbund. The conditions under which Hirche developed professionally are explored here for the first time. Using Hirche as a concrete example, the specifics of the situation after the lost war are examined: The Werkbund's attempts to capitalise on the international successes and the politically unencumbered traditions of the 1920s, largely negating the programmatic, aesthetic and biographical continuities that had existed during the Nazi era, and reviving the utopian potential of modernity(ies) in the spirit of optimism in the Germany of reconstruction and "Wirtschaftswunder". As a furniture and product designer, exhibition designer and propagandist of good form, design functionary and university lecturer, Hirche had a decisive influence on the development of the objective, morally connoted design "Made in (West) Germany", through which the young Federal Republic of Germany gave a new - modern - face to its forced socio-political change after 1945
Although the conflict between Muthesius and van de Velde has been well documented in the annals of modern architectural and design history, far less understood is the extent to which domestic political crises and new policy departures in Berlin served as preconditions for the Werkbund conflict in the first place. Prominent Werkbund members—men such as Werkbund Managing Director Ernst Jäckh and Werkbund Vice President Hermann Muthesius, but also including such national political figures and Werkbund members as Friedrich Naumann of Württemberg and Gustav Stresemann of Saxony—used institutional affiliations and their multiple professional identities to forge unprecedented linkages between the Werkbund leadership, industrial interest groups, and powerful German state interests. Specifically, and at the national level, new policies articulated by German Chancellor Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg and key German ministries in Berlin, strident national interest group politics, and an evolving state outlook toward Weltpolitik (geopolitical strategy) combined to reshape Werkbund policy in fundamental ways between 1912 and 1914. Without these forces, and without developments that followed the lopsided and highly contentious Reichstag elections of January 1912, the Werkbund likely never would have risen to the prominent position it came to occupy with state authorities by July 1914.
Beginning with the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019, new perspectives are being revealed on GDR design. This promises a revision of the German design historiography of the last decades, which was dominated by West-German perspectives. Referring to this trend in research, my essay questions the German history and historiography of design. After the Second World War, the German historiography of art followed the paradigm of the Cold War (Abstraction in the West, Socialist Realism in the East). The historiography of design followed this schema by distinguishing "socialist" from "capitalist" design. To this day, this prevents "transnational" perspectives. In contrast to this, I agree with the argument that the consolidation of the two German states occurred with reference to the (old) concept of "good form", among other things. Even though the different discourses refer to similar objects and references, they are structured by different interpretations of the term "Good Form", referring to the ruling ideology of the particular state. It represents a central argument in aesthetic education (Geschmackserziehung), which contained moral and political values. In 1950s West Germany, the Deutscher Werkbund, an organization which was involved in processes of institutionalization in both the political and design historical field, was the main driver of this discourse. In contrast to this, the institutionalization of design in the GDR was organized by the state. Nevertheless, distinctive parallels in the discourses in East and West suggest the lasting impact of the Werkbund. Consequently, I argue that the discursive foundations, which were laid in the 1950s at the latest, had a lasting influence on "German-German" (deutsch-deutsch) design historiography and have recently opened up a pan-German (gesamtdeutsch) perspective. ; Beginning with the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019, new perspectives are being revealed on GDR design.
