Under imperial Japanese rule, Taiwan experienced a relatively high rate of economic growth, and this growth is often attributed to well‐planned development policies. This paper argues that Taiwan's success was primarily due to the glut of money that flowed into the Japanese Empire during World War One. Taiwanese had suffered from limited access to credit, but, during the war, the Japanese‐controlled Bank of Taiwan had to find an outlet for the huge inflow of funds and greatly expanded lending to native Taiwanese. This unscripted experiment was a success, and continued access to formal capital markets allowed Taiwanese agriculture to takeoff.

In the first section of the work, the study of the beginning of armed aggression of the RF against Ukraine in 2014, which ended with the annexation of the Crimea by Russia, was conducted.The second chapter explores the further development of Russia's large-scale intrusion into the territory of Ukraine in 2014-2015.In the third section of the work, attention is paid to the peculiarities of a complex negotiation process aimed at finding ways to resolve the conflict in the Donbass.The study of diplomatic battles allowed us to determine the prospects for the further development of relations between Ukraine and other leading countries of the world.

AbstractThis article analyses how political settlements can help deepen our understanding of how underlying rules of the game and power relations shape patterns of inclusion and exclusion, and prospects for political, social and economic transformation. Drawing on insights from a growing body of research in the area of the politics of development, the paper explores what kinds of factors have helped to foster more inclusive institutions across the developing world. By way of conclusion, it offers reflections on how a political settlement approach can enable donors to engage more effectively in efforts to foster progressive change. Abstract
Due to information technology development and its industrial adaptation, the dilemmas so far specific to philosophical speculations and science-fiction literature and films have become the real problems of the contemporary world. On one hand, these issues are related to an unprecedented scale on which computational algorithms are currently used as well as a level of complexity of mutual connections; on the other hand, these are linked to their autonomous behavior. States, industry, and users themselves demand formulation of understandable ethical categories and determination of transparency standards and legal norms for these algorithms' functioning in the near future.

For Graham SealThis paper probes the relationship between visual representations and visitation practices at Pasargadae, a UNESCO World Heritage site in southern Iran. Presenting a systematic analysis of publicly available online images of Pasargadae, the paper examines the complex relationship between the place and its visual representations. Through analysis, the paper elaborates on a sense of intimacy that, while grounding Pasargadae, is also a potential common ground in pre-Islamic heritage in which the Iranian state and society could at once meet and contest versions of identity. Examining this relationship facilitates reflections into both heritage and the peculiarities of its visual representation in the Iranian context.

Through an analysis of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games trilogy (2008, 2009, 2010), this text will consider the ways in which contemporary postfeminism can be read as a dystopic narrative. The protagonist of the novel (and the rest of the trilogy) is Katniss Everdeen, a young woman who through an ethics of care, disruption of the heteronormative script, and a critical posthuman embodiment offers an alternative to the dystopic present offered by postfeminism. In Katniss' dystopian world, Collins constructs a narrative that highlights the continued need for a feminist politics of engagement and activism that works against claims for neo-liberal individualism.

One hundred and ten years ago, at the initiative of Russia, the Second International Peace Conference was held in The Hague. It adopted 10 conventions on the laws and customs of war that laid the foundation for the system of international humanitarian law. It became a logical continuation of the 1899 conference, also convened at the initiative of Russia, which established general rules for the peaceful settlement of clashes between the powers, as well as a number of resolutions and «wishes» for conducting military operations. The article analyzes the reasons for convening these international forums and their significance for the world community.

On 19 July 1926, the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors held a hearing on the claim of Professor Paul Langevin and Monsieur M. Constantin Chilowsky for compensation from the British Admiralty for their discovery of sonar. The hearings provide unique insights into the origins and early research of active sonar and an important snapshot of the Royal Navy's anti-submarine warfare research in the mid-1920s. Moreover, the hearing reveals much more than the details of a major technological discovery; it is also an important case study of the relationship between inventors and governments during and after the First World War.

Abstract
In their attempt to provide a definition of the idyllic genre, readers of the medieval corpus of idyllic romance, from 1913 to our days, have discussed the relevance of such structural data as the lovers' age and similitude, their readiness to follow a bookish ars amandi or Nature's call, the patterns of mésalliance, the trials and tribulations of separation, and the notion of a happy end meant to change the face of the world. In order to integrate and synthesize these data, our study proposes a new approach to the idyllic corpus, based on the concept of "emotional reality" and its medieval counterparts.

The power of social connections is a contemporary focus of research across world regions. Yet, evidence of challenges to carers' social relationships remains fragmented and underexplored. We conducted a scoping review of 66 articles to create a state-of-knowledge review of the social consequences of caring. Findings indicate evidence of consequences for relationships with care receivers, with other family members and with broader social networks. Knowledge gaps include changes in relationships across time and in understanding diversity in the types and extent of consequences. Evidence challenges assumptions related to caregiving families and to the sustainability of family care.

AbstractEmerging mega‐integration blocs, such as the Trans‐Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, are evolving outside of the World Trade Organization's influence. Their most contested features are their investor–state dispute settlement (ISDS) systems. This article considers basic features of the ISDS system, the expansion in the number of ISDS cases and the privileged place of corporations vis‐à‐vis citizens in the law‐making process. The arcane private corporation‐friendly ISDS system is beyond reparation and it needs to be scrapped. The existing court systems in the self‐assured democracies of Europe, North America and Australia are sufficient.

Why is the economic status of women better in one country than another? We maintain that the answer lies in part in the extent of external threat to the homeland territory a country faces. To respond to the threat, states centralize their decision-making, invest more in the military and decrease citizens' liberties. Associated restrictions and emphases on more "masculine" values create an environment where women's welfare takes a back seat to the ostensible priority of defending the homeland. Utilizing measures of women's unemployment from across the world, 1981–2001, we demonstrate that higher levels of territorial threat decrease women's economic welfare.

Music in Intercultural RelationsThe author undertakes a very relevant analysis of intercultural relations performed by individuals and groups by means of music. Music constitutes here a specific language, able to communicate and transmit the most complicated and intimate thoughts and emotions of the sender(s). Examples given in the article stem from different cultures and traditions and are discussed on the basis of flamenco, Cape Verdean music, the case of Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio, the concept of lusophony and so called "world music". The general conclusion leads to a statement about a unique role of music in the intercultural relations.

This paper presents new findings on global inequality dynamics from the World Wealth and Income Database (WID.world), with particular emphasis on the contrast between the trends observed in the United States, China, France, and the United Kingdom. We observe rising top income and wealth shares in nearly all countries in recent decades. But the magnitude of the increase varies substantially, thereby suggesting that different country-specific policies and institutions matter considerably. Long-run wealth inequality dynamics appear to be highly unstable. We stress the need for more democratic transparency on income and wealth dynamics and better access to administrative and financial data.
