The book is based on original data and field studies from Brazil, Thailand, India and Sub-Saharan Africa. Focusing on the issue of universal and free access to treatment (a goal now taken to heart by the international community), it assesses the progress made and presents a rigorous diagnosis of the obstacles that remain, especially the constraints imposed by TRIPS and the poor state of most public health systems in Southern countries. In so doing, the book renews our understanding of the political economy of HIV/AIDS in these vast regions, where it continues to spread with devastating social and economic consequences
"This book is a product of a convergence of the diverse areas of law, international development and the integral mission of the Christian church. As a lawyer, academic and consultant in international development, I have had the opportunity to work extensively in the areas of governance, law and anti-corruption. I know, in theory and practice, the focuses, methods and tools that international development organizations use to fight corruption. I have seen at firsthand and endured the limitations of the mainstream approaches to combat corruption. Complementing this, my experience in global missions has allowed me to affirm, understand and appreciate the responsibility and great potential of the Christian church - as a community of believers - to be an agent of social transformation. I also fully recognize that we, as communities of believers, are falling short in modelling public integrity and playing an active protagonist role in the fight against corruption. This book will hopefully help believers and the church to reflect on, awaken to and engage with the profound injustice of corruption."--Publisher

The Minister of Youth and Sports Regulation No 24 of 2017 regulates the fulfilment of athletes' rights concerning criteria and standards for developing talented prospective athletes and providing income and facilities to outstanding athletes and coaches. Therefore, it has become the obligation of institutions such as KONI Aceh, responsible for athlete development, to fulfil all rights Aceh Pelatda athletes possess. The purpose of this study is to determine the implementation and execution of athletes' rights and the obstacles faced by Aceh regional training athletes in obtaining their rights by applicable regulations. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis, employing research instruments such as interviews, observations, and documentary studies. The subjects in this study are 12 individuals, including representatives of the KONI Vice Chairman/Chairman of Pelatda Aceh, KONI Secretary, and two athletes from each of the five different branches, totalling ten individuals. The results show that aspects such as honorariums, accommodation, meals, additional food, travel expenses, and health check-up services have been well implemented in implementing athletes' rights fulfilment by KONI Aceh. However, some areas need improvement, such as drafting employment agreements between athletes and KONI Aceh, improving consumption management, and enhancing health services, especially in psychology. The obstacles athletes face, especially regarding legal uncertainty, are caused by the absence of written agreements between athletes and KONI Aceh. Athletes' perceptions of the fulfilment of rights provided by KONI Aceh tend to be positive, with athletes feeling satisfied with the rights provided. However, there is room for improvement in certain aspects. KONI Aceh is recommended to establish written agreements, revise athlete meal menus, and provide psychological services in addition to Pelatda athlete health services.

Conflicts about space and access to resources have shaped queer histories from at least 1965 to the present. As spaces associated with middle-class homosexuality enter mainstream urbanity in the United States, cultural assimilation increasingly erases insurgent aspects of these social movements. This gentrification itself leads to queer displacement. Combining urban history, architectural critique, and queer and trans theories, Queering Urbanism traces these phenomena through the history of a network of sites in the San Francisco Bay Area. Within that urban landscape, Stathis Yeros investigates how queer people appropriated existing spaces, how they expressed their distinct identities through aesthetic forms, and why they mobilized the language of citizenship to shape place and secure space. Here the legacies of LGBTQ+ rights activism meet contemporary debates about the right to housing and urban life
This is an open access book. This book offers the first overview of the 'wicked problems' literature, often seen as complex, open-ended, and intractable, with both the nature of the 'problem' and the preferred 'solution' being strongly contested. It contextualises the debate using a wide range of relevant policy examples, explaining why these issues attract so much attention. There is an increasing interest in the conceptual and practical aspects of how 'wicked problems' are identified, understood and managed by policy practitioners. The standard public management responses to complexity and uncertainty (including traditional regulation and market-based solutions) are insufficient. Leaders often advocate and implement ideological 'quick fixes', but integrative and inclusive responses are increasingly being utilised to recognise the multiple interests and complex causes of these problems. This book uses examples from a wide range of social, economic and environmental fields in order to develop new insights about better solutions, and thus gain broad stakeholder acceptance for shared strategies for tackling 'wicked problems'.

"Highlighting the interwoven relationship between Chinese rural society and larger historical forces, this book charts the evolution of China's rural society from 1901 to 1949, concentrating on the major changes of this period and the scenarios developed to modernize rural society during the half century leading up to the Revolution. The modern history of rural China is one of sweeping institutional and structural transformation across many dimensions. As the first half of the 20th century unfolded, against a backdrop of turbulent changes across a country that underwent industrialization, urbanization and modernization, China's agriculture, rural population and rural communities encountered many crises, but also showed remarkable resilience and capacity for adaptation and reform. In each of the six chapters, the author delves into one aspect or examines one period of this massive transformation, and identifies the social, economic, political and cultural significance of this tumultuous processes at work. The book will appeal to both scholars and general readers interested in modern Chinese history and the transformation of rural China"--
Late Munich sociologist Ulrich Beck (1944-2015) engaged in numerous public debates, among others on civil society. He considered it a "reform idea", a tool of democratization, even of "creative disobedience". Like many other academicians, he encountered difficulties though to properly define the term. At one point he compared civil society to a "pudding nailed to the wall". This distinctive image expressed his and others uneasiness with the inflationary usage of civil society and a sense of vagueness. This perception has not changed very much in recent years, especially in the general public. Therefore, more enlightenment, best practice and hands-on examples as well as in-depth perspectives on civil society and its modes of operation seem to be the command of the hour. This shall be undertaken and presented in this dossier within the field of self-organization, self-help and peer counseling, along the lines and frontiers of voluntary and professional engagement. One of the focuses is anxiety self-help and how it has evolved in a tandem partnership of lay experts and academic experts to a resourceful and valuable player in the realm of civil society. In view of the current corona uncertainties regarding our future in health-related aspects and, in general, post-corona societal modeling this type of twinning may become a shaping force and help civil society to win much more visibility and profile.

Health and education are fundamental aspects of human and social development, which we will analyze through the lens of the Socio-phenomenological approach applied in both health promotion and education. Health is constitutively related to education, and it cannot be intended just as a psychobiological condition. Self-determination of our own health requires assuming responsibility and active citizenship. The right of deciding about our own health cannot be automatically accomplished through an «innate» capacity, but it requires education, metaphorically intended as a flywheel that initially allows the individual to acquire awareness of his/her health needs/desires and, later, to assume a political position in the community, in order to make those needs/desires acknowledged. How can we avoid to reduce health promotion activities in schools and community to tandardized practices, which do not consider the embodied needs/desires of the individuals? The Socio-phenomenological approach calls to the «human» component of preventive activities, connecting the individuals' need for wellbeing with the common good.

This article investigates issues behind households' tax payment morale, theoretical and practical aspects of the tax payment gap, and its impact on public sector revenue in Baltic countries. The attitude of households on tax payment is assessed quantitatively by employing a dichotomous logit-probit regression analysis. The tax payment gap among Baltic households has been investigated by applying a "macro approach," the main components of which are the shadow economy and the total tax rate. The effect of any hypothetical changes in tax morale is assessed by applying social accounting matrixes, which are based on national account data and allow to keep the economy balanced at all time. The results presented in this research suggest that taxes uncollected from households constitute nearly one fifth of total general government revenues and count nearly one tenth of the nominal GDP. Measures applied to strengthening tax morale positively contribute to public sector revenue and in general to the economy, though they should be applied gradually.

Jan Cremers (TLS) was commissioned by the European Parliament to assess the European Commission's proposals for a European Labour Authority. The focus of the resulting briefing paper is on the principles (Chapter 1) and the tasks of the Authority (Chapter 2). The briefing paper forms part of a series of notes having been prepared in the context of a Workshop on the European Labour Authority held at the extra-ordinary meeting of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee on 24 May 2018. It is structured as follows: • A brief analysis of existing enforcement problems • The Authority-proposals for a more effective enforcement • Positive aspects and shortcomings • Policy recommendations. Although he is positive about the initiative, Cremers pinpoints also some weaknesses, such as a too limited mandate to act EU-wide, the lack of a dissuasive and effective fining policy, too limited access to the work of the Authority and the restricted scope of the activities.

This essay proposes a framework to analyze cross-national variation in women's legal rights. To explore the distinct logics of policy change, we disaggregate sex equality policies on two dimensions: 1) whether they improve the status of women as a group or alleviate gender-based class inequalities, and 2) whether or not they challenge the doctrine of organized religion and the codified tradition of major cultural groups. We show that policies promoting gender equality seek fundamental social change and therefore challenge historical patterns of state-society interaction concerning relations between the state and the market; the respective authority of the state, religion, and cultural groups; and the contours of citizenship. Different issues, however, challenge different aspects of these relations. What's more, the priorities, strategies, and effectiveness of advocates and opponents of change (including women's movements, left parties, international NGOs, and organized religion) are shaped by state capacity, policy legacies, international vulnerability, and the degree of democracy.
