; peerReviewed ; publishedVersion
War ; fragile states ; and warlords are topics of current peace and conflict studies ; often linked in this order. The situation on the southern Philippines shows a rather different picture: lords in war outperform warlords and stand at the beginning and end of the chain of causation. They possess a triple power base: i) an inherited socioeconomic ruling position ; ii) a gate keeper role collaborating as local politicians with the oligarchic Philippine State ; and iii) their violence capacities in a conflict situation between state and rebel groups. The paper compares along material ; ideal and institutional dimensions warlords and lords in war ; based on a historical-materialist approach. The analytical differentiation of warlords and lords in war is not without ambiguities. However ; it helps to highlight that the conceptual antagonism of state vs. warlord conceals that local rulers develop a new hybrid role combining formal and informal capacities and practices. Therefore ; reintegration of rebel soldiers ; socioeconomic development programs ; and a strengthening of state forces will counter warlords. To counter lords in war towards a more democratic society ; more elaborated structural change has to occur. This would support the claims of the main rebel groups. However ; necessary change does not just encompass the local arena as such ; but the Philippine post/neo-colonial power system as a whole. It remains a difficult task for the ongoing peace processes. The analytical results advice peace and conflict studies that a look on social structures can inform their analysis. In post/neo-colonial local government structures ; direct violence is not just the top conflict level but an intrinsic factor of ruling. Advocates of change on the other hand have to focus more strongly on the dynamics of crises ; dismissing the idea of short and clean-cut revolutionary developments. Thus ; social and conflict analyses have to be combined to enable scientific support of peace processes. A further elaboration of the used approach could be a possibility.
In spite of its ironic posture, Christian Kracht's novel Imperium (2012) contains a serious criticism of civilization, which is illustrated along the protagonist August Engelhardt. Through the fictionalization of this historical character, the novel critically reflects German colonialism, but also the "German madness" (Setz 2015: 155). This way, Imperium highlights the dialectical dimensions of culture as well as of colonialism and thus calls for a postcolonial reading. The aim of this study is to work out that Kracht's novel Imperium by means of the fictionalization of the historical figure August Engelhardt offers a postcolonial perspective on the colonial as well as totalitarian ambitions of the Wilhelminian Era. This perspective is intensified through a critical view in sense of the cultural criticism that was developed by Horkheimer and Adorno in the Dialectic of Enlightenment (2006). Doing so, the novel presents the inhuman dimensions of unilateral concepts in a remarkable way. After mapping out the theoretical foundation of the study in the context of Postcolonial German Studies and outlining of the interrelations of cultural criticism and postcolonial approaches, I will investigate the critical dimension of the novel with regard to the progress optimism as well to the German colonial expansion politics at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Thereby, I will concentrate on the ambivalent protagonist August Engelhardt and his strange philosophical ideas, which celebrate the coconut as a sacred fruit. Based on the regression of the protagonist, the subversions of the colonial discourse will be explored with respect to the arguments of Horkheimer and Adorno.
The article starts criticizing the common theories about the origin of the Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. On television, in several newspapers and even in scientific publications the conflict is explained in monocausal and unhistoric ways. Gabriele VENSKY, correspondent of the "Frankfurter Rundschau" and the "Zeit", describes the conflict as consequence of wrong decisions within the present Srilancan government which came to act under the influence of group of Buddhist-Sinhalese chauvinists. Other writers see the origin of the conflict in the social disintegration and poverty of the people in Sri Lanka (J.DONNER), in the state-controlled economy of various SLFP-governments (Newton GUNASINGHE) or just in the process of becoming independent (Tessa HOFMANN). Some other explanations go far more back into history. They refer to the "Mahavamsa", the great chronicle of Sinhalese, dating back to the sixth century. The "Mahavamsa" is mythological glorification of the "Sinhalese race" who came first to the island and made it paradise before it was destroyed by the "tamil babarians". The history of the island is described as permanent fight between Tamils and Sinhalese. Those explanation often are expressed by the common people of Sri Lanka, but also by serious scientists as for instance Heinz BECHERT who presumes that the Sinhalese nationalism has started in the second century B.C. Against these theories the present paper holds that nationalism is a modern a concept. In Sri Lanka nationalism has started as an ideology of the Sinhalese elite who claimed that their struggle for self-determination would be the struggle of the whole people - the nation. Under the British administration different possibilities to reach elite status emerged: The control of commercial agriculture, arrack production or graphite mines. The number of the Ceylonese elite is estimated by Michael ROBERTS to be 5-6 percent of the adult population. Their economic success led them to claim political participation, too. But in the colonial environment ...
In an entry of his 1916 journal, Hans Paasche (1881-1920) wrote a long reflection on metánoia, a concept indicating a radical shift in thinking. In fact, the whole life of Hans Paasche itself could be read as such a radical conversion. He was all that follows: officer in the repression of the Maji-Maji riots in the German colonies of Ostafrika, skilled hunter, volunteer in the Great War, and then vigorous pacifist, relentless opponent of alcohol abuse and fervent vegetarian, ironic writer and passionate political reformer. In a context in which attempts at change were seen as traitorous, his life shows that self-acknowledgement may lead to marginalisation and to murder. The absence of forgiveness and understanding in his case still continues and his work and thought have been almost totally removed from any public and literary discourse in Germany. This paper intends to analyze his thought through his works, mainly "Die Forschungsreise des Afrikaners Lukanga Mukara ins innerste Deutschland", highlighting how, in his later years, Paasche felt the need to communicate his traumatic experiences with the intent of avoiding their repetition.
; Colonialism and the Jews is a thought-provoking volume examining the intersections of Jewish and colonial history. Looking at Jews as agents and subjects of empires, at their political engagement within imperial systems and at Zionism's links with colonialism, it is an important reference book for everyone trying to better understand the role of minorities in multinational colonial empires. Articles ranging from studies on Jews in French Morocco to Jewish return migration within the British Empire provide for a broad comparative perspective elucidating how Orientalism, Jewishness, and modernization intertwined within European colonial empires.
