URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0401215 ; During this workshop scholars presented new, mainly empirical studies which explored different aspects of right-wing extremism in Germany. While a number of talks focused on political strategies and modern forms of organization of local neo-Nazi scenes, political elites and the music industry, others had chosen a biographical view on the personal development of young right-wing extremists. Studies on the local context of and conditions for right-wing extremist actions were complemented by representative survey data on political attitudes of German citizens. Apart from discussions about the phenomenon of right-wing extremism itself, participants had the opportunity to exchange their experience of doing empirical qualitative research in a dangerous field.

A review essay on books by: Wilhelm Heitmeyer, Rechtsextremistische Orientierungen bei Jugendlichen. Empirische Ergebnisse und Erklarungsmuster einer Untersuchung zur politischen Sozialisation (Right-Wing Extremist Orientations of Youth. Empirical Results and Explanation from an Investigation of Political Socialization); Wilhelm Heitmeyer & Jorg Ingo Peter, Jugendliche Fussballfans. Soziale und politische Orientierungen, Gesellungsformen, Gewalt (Young Foozeball Fans. Social and Political Orientation, Social Formation and Power); & Wilhelm Heitmeyer et al, Die Bielefelder Rechtsextremismus-Studie. Erste Langzeitungersuchung zur politischen Sozialisation mannlicher Jugendlicher ([The Bielefeld Right-Wing extremism Study. First Long-Term Study of Political Socialization among Male Youth] Juventa, Weinheim, 1987, 1988, & 1992, respectively; [see listings in IRPS No. 80]). Critically analyzes the ideas of Wilhelm Heitmeyer & his team of researchers at the U of Bielefeld, Germany. The Heitmeyer school identifies a causal connection between capitalistic means of production, cultural erosion, feelings of isolation & inferiority among youth, & the turn to right-wing extremist orientations in contemporary Germany. Several problematics of Heitmeyer's work are discussed, including: whether violence is a normal action form to settle conflict; the definition & actual extent of right-wing extremism in Germany; why isolated individuals choose group membership based on nationality & ethnicity rather than some other trait; & why women under the same conditions of social disintegration are much less likely to adopt right-wing orientations. Heitmeyer's methodology is critiqued & his findings compared to those of other research, including studies that locate the causes of extremism in political socialization or authoritarian family structures. Applies systems theory to social movements (SMs) & analyzes right-wing extremism in Germany as a SM. Approaches which deny that right-wing extremist activities constitute a SM rely on an overly rational, narrow, & normative definition of SMs. The systems theory approach conceptualizes SMs in terms of the reproduction & combination of mobilizing events. Methods & findings from organizational behavior, youth sociology, election research, the study of subcultures, & research on violence help to investigate the taxonomy & dynamics of right-wing extremism. It is concluded that right-wing activities can be interpreted as a SM that is symbolically integrated around the question of immigration. Adapted from the source document.

Rural areas provide specific opportunities for the establishment of right wing extremists. Spatial limitation & intimacy in social relations tend to result in the notion that extremists are part of the community & that their everyday activism is not considered as problematic. The example of the German Bundesland Hesse shows that it is primarily long-established right wing activists who are tolerated in their community. By contrast, rural communities are likely to resist right extremism if it is perceived as an external problem. Strategies aimed at countering a rightist daily routine are doomed to fail if they do not acknowledge the social particularities of the rural space. Adapted from the source document.

Ueckermunde was a stronghold of the NPD in the last election to the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern even though party structures are weak. This success can be explained by the NPD's good foundation within civil society. A citizens' action committee & offers for young people sustained by right wing extremists let them appear as active local citizens. This case study shows he successful cooperation between right wing activists as active local citizens & the NPD as a regional movement party. Adapted from the source document.
