Nora Rabotnikov's book, En busca de un lugar comun (In Search of a Common Space) covers s diversity of theory & practice, but the central problem she tackles is how to recover the collective, common, & general dimensions of the public. She first reviews Kant's project on the public & then comments on the views of Reinhart Koselleck, Hannah Arendt, Juergen Habermas, & Niklas Luhmann on the recovery of the public space. It appears that the public has been eliminated in the modern system of first person, agent, & subject. Rabotnikof elaborates on the three main obstacles to the construction of the public space -- the anti-political temptation, Mafioso realism, & confusion between moral & moralism; these could be said to constitute the closed & steel circuit of amoralism in theory & practice. Rabotnikof at times succumbs to this circuit & at other times avoids it. M. Pflum
