Zeit ist neben dem Raum eine zentrale Kategorie der Soziologie. Die Kernfrage dieses Buches lautet deshalb: Welche Forschungsmethoden benötigt die Soziologie, um Verlaufsmuster (also Regelmäßigkeiten sozialen Handelns und deren Wandel) empirisch adäquat zu erfassen? In Teil I diskutiert Nina Baur, wie Soziologen und Historiker mit der Zeitlichkeit sozialen Handelns umgehen. Um Verlaufsmuster adäquat erfassen zu können, müssen theoretischen Erkenntnisse der Soziologie bezüglich Handlungsbereichen, -ebenen und -räumen und der Geschichtswissenschaft bezüglich der Zeit zusammengeführt werden. Auf Basis der Überlegungen entwickelt Baur in Teil II einen Bezugsrahmen, mit dem man - ausgehend vom Primat des methodologischen Individualismus - auf kollektive Handlungsmuster zugreifen kann. Mit Hilfe des Bezugsrahmens untersucht die Autorin in Teil III wichtige in Soziologie und Geschichtswissenschaft entwickelte Methoden daraufhin, ob sie zur Erfassung von Verlaufsmustern geeignet sind. Jedes Verfahren wird in seinen Grundzügen skizziert. Sein theoretisches Potential für die Verlaufsmusteranalyse wird ausführlich anhand eines empirischen Beispiels erläutert. Die wichtigsten quantitativen Methoden zur Erfassung von Verlaufsmustern sind die Kohorten- , Zeitreihen- , Ereignis- und Sequenzanalyse. Aus dem Bereich der qualitativen Sozialforschung diskutiert Nina Baur die Leistungen von Grounded Theory, der biographischen Methode, der Fallstudienmethode und historischer qualitativer Verfahren. Die Arbeit ist mit dem "Kulturpreis Bayern", der vom Stromversorger E.ON Bayern AG ins Leben gerufen wurde, und mit dem Dissertationspreis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS) ausgezeichnet worden

Die politische, ökonomische und soziologische Debatte darüber, wie man das soziale Problem der Arbeitslosigkeit beseitigen kann, wird seit Jahren geführt. Nina Baur liefert mit ihrer umfassenden Einführung in die Themenbereiche Erwerbsarbeit, Arbeitslosigkeit und Zukunft der Arbeit sowie einer Auflistung der relevanten Autoren und Theorien einen grundlegenden Überblick zur aktuellen Diskussion.

Human social life is deeply embedded in ecological processes, and as Johan Goudsblom has stressed, the interdependencies between humans and their "natural" environment have changed in the course of history. According to Goudsblom, three great ecological transformations can be observed in the course of the civilising process: the control of fire, the transition from gathering and hunting to producing food by agriculture and animal husbandry, and industrialisation. In recent years, both scientists and the public of Western societies have become increasingly aware that a fourth ecological transformation (towards more sustainable consumption and lifestyles) is necessary in order to minimise the effects of climate change. However, although most people are aware of the need for more sustainable consumption, very little seems to change, and even consumers desperately struggling to change their lifestyle, seem to fail in their efforts. Using the example of the Berlin food market, I argue that the causes for this lack of change cannot be understood without understanding the structure and power balances in global value chains which are deeply rooted in history, which have evolved in the course of centuries, and which in the course of the third ecological transformation (industrialisation and urbanisation) not only became the keystone of modern capitalism but since then are also deeply engrained in material urban, transport routes and production in- frastructures. These spatial arrangements not only stabilise a specific mode of production by forcing social processes into path-dependence. They also hide power balances and drive human social life to an unsustainable lifestyle. Knowledge plays a key role in maintaining both circulation along the commodity chain and the existing power balances.

The debate on decolonizing the social sciences is intrinsically linked to debates about objectivity, subjectivity, and positionality because postcolonial scholars criticize the idea that "objective" knowledge is possible and argue that research findings are influenced by researchers' subjectivity and positionality. However, when empirically addressing issues such as social or global inequality, objectivity and comparability would be direly needed. This dilemma is often hidden because the current postcolonial debate focusses on theory rather than methodology and methods and ignores differences in epistemic cultures. Using the German-language debates on objectivity and subjectivity, I illustrate that social science methodology has suggested some solutions to handling positionality, namely a reflexive methodology and an empirically-grounded epistemology, using social theory, using methods, and collaborating. I use my own research style to illustrate what applying these techniques might mean in research practice and point to some blind spots that methodological research should address in future research, amongst them reintegrating theory and methods, overcoming power structures in the global system of science, handling language, and decolonizing ethnography.

Both Norbert Elias and Pierre Bourdieu argue that both the research question and social theory should guide methodology and methods. Both theorists argue that any social theory should keep in mind the importance of macro-level structures; in micro-level interactions and social change. In order to fully grasp patterns of social change, social scientists would require a complex causal processed-oriented micro-macro-analysis. Because in research practice, it is almost never possible to implement the full methodology, both Elias and Bourdieu used a short-cut by using a six-step methodology, consisting of (1) self-reflexivity and detachment; (2) an explaining of the theoretical perspective; (3) a reconstructing of the figuration's/field's socio-genesis; (4) a reconstructing of the micro-level; (5) a reconstructing of the macro-level; and (6) a theoretical synopsis. By using an example on local variation of economic practices, the paper illustrates this six-step methodology and concludes with further questions for future research.

The paper shows how cross-cultural, cross-societal, cross-national, multi-national and international comparative survey researchers have been handling space since the 1950s and how it can be used for spatial analysis. Using the concepts of the Survey Life Cycle and the Total Survey Error (TSE), the paper discusses two major methodological problems cross-cultural survey methodology faces: The problems of (1) equivalence and (2) demarcation.

In der heutigen Reformdebatte werden nach Ansicht der Autorin einige zentrale Aspekte des ordoliberalen Denkens ausgeblendet, die für die Tragfähigkeit von Reformen relevant sind. Sie analysiert in ihrem Beitrag, wie das Leitbild der sozialen Marktwirtschaft nach 1945 in den Institutionen politisch umgesetzt wurde, und zeigt die Beziehungen zwischen Arbeitsmarkt, Sozialstaat und Familie im Konzept der sozialen Marktwirtschaft in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren auf. Des weiteren problematisiert sie den Verlust des ganzheitlichen Denkens seit den 1970er Jahren und die heutige Entfremdung der Politik von den Lebensvorstellungen der Bürger. Statt die Gesamtordnung zu gestalten, haben die politischen Maßnahmen der vergangenen Jahre ihrer Meinung nach lediglich einzelne Politikfelder reformiert, so dass Zielkonflikte verschärft wurden. Insbesondere der Wandel der Geschlechterbeziehungen wurde bei fast allen Reformen ignoriert. Die Autorin verdeutlicht dies anhand der Widersprüche zwischen Erwerbsorientierungen und den Idealen einer erfüllten Partnerschaft mit Kindern. Dabei geht sie auf institutionelle Widersprüche, d.h. gleichzeitig bestehende Forderung nach einem Ernährer-Hausfrau-Modell im Bereich der Kindererziehung sowie der Forderung nach einer individualisierten Lebensgestaltung auf dem Arbeitsmarkt und im Bereich der Sozialversicherungssysteme, ein. Sie stellt ferner ausgewählte Umfragergebnisse zur Bewertung der Hartz-Reformen (2005) und einer Studie zu Männlichkeitsbildern der Deutschen vor. (ICI)

'Theory and data are closely linked in empirical research: Data are the main source for building and testing theories, and without theoretical focus, it is impossible to select and interpret data. Still, the relationship between theory and data is only rarely discussed and, if so, only on a general level. Focussing on process-oriented and longitudinal research questions, the authors of this special issue contribute to this discussion by elaborating some data types that can be used for analyzing long-term social processes. For each specific data type, it is important to ask about their specific characteristics and how this effects interpretation. The authors address these questions from a broad range of theories and by either re-analyzing research-elicited data or by using process-generated data.' (author's abstract)
