RésuméCette contribution a pour point de départ la présentation du livre de K. Harper, qui traite de la place de l'évolution du climat et des maladies dans l'histoire de l'Empire romain. Après avoir présenté les grandes thèses défendues par l'auteur, elle s'attache aux critiques qui ont pu être adressées à ces restitutions par certains historiens : sous-estimation de la complexité de l'évolution climatique, surestimation de la mortalité épidémique, utilisation abusive des apologistes chrétiens, mobilisation des concepts de consilience et de résilience. Ces choix rendent compte des accusations de déterminisme et de réductionnisme dont le livre a fait l'objet. Le récit que K. Harper fait de l'histoire de Rome doit être replacé dans le contexte d'une histoire globale et environnementale promue par des historiens américains qui y saluent une entrée magistrale de l'histoire de Rome dans les préoccupations d'un monde du xxie siècle menacé par les deux conséquences de la globalisation : le changement climatique et les pandémies. Ils s'opposent en cela aux historiens européens qui insistent sur la diversité des conditions environnementales du temps de l'Empire et sur l'héritage historique légué aux nations européennes. Si l'écart entre ces deux approches fait l'intérêt du débat, le « présentisme » dont elles témoignent l'une et l'autre les expose au risque d'interpréter la chute de Rome en fonction des inquiétudes environnementales et géopolitiques actuelles.

The aim of this article is to draw the attention of geoarcheologists working on the carbonated deposits of aqueducs to the need to take account of the Roman legal rules governing their use. The approach is historiographical. It is based on the study of the Nîmes aqueduct, an urban aqueduct, and the study of the southern branch of the Arles pipeline. It was used for private use to feed the Barbegal mills. Owners bordering a public water pipeline were allowed to use the water for a fee. They had a legal obligation to maintain the duct and its surroundings. The rules which applied to the Barbegal aqueduct were governed by private law. The characteristics and importance of the realisation of the Nîmes aqueduct depend as much on natural development as on interventions on the canal for water intakes and for its maintenance. In the case of the Barbegal aqueduct, observation and analysis shows (1) that the mills did not operate throughout the year, (2) that the original building was covered and that its roof was subsequently removed or destroyed, (3) that the water pipeline served as a reserve of water during its periods of operation. ; International audience This article aims to draw the attention of geoarchaeologists who work on the carbonate deposits (sinter) of aqueducts to the importance of the legal regulation, which framed the use of aqueducts. Evidence of this type of establishment is to be found in written sources, in particular the inscriptions that link them to the tabernae constructed along the viae militares on the orders of the Governor of Thrace. However, there was no archaeological evidence for their existence before the praetorium of Muru of Bangius in Sardinia was identified. The article examines the case of five roadside buildings in the Rhine Valley in Kembs, Oedenburg (Westergass I and II) and Breisach (Germany), as well as in Burgundy in Saint-Moré, all of which have been identified as praetoria . The term is a polysemous one, and it is therefore preferable not to differentiate between military and civilian praetoria or between urban and roadside praetoria . The common social and political status of those who frequented them – senior state officials or members of their entourage – means that they cover a single and unique concept. The term taberna is also polysemous: it does not refer to a particular type of roadside establishment only, and a taberna could be either a public or private edifice. The same applies to stabula . The article therefore argues against the practice of giving such terms a technical meaning that would justify their use in an architectural typology. ; Cet article propose un état de la question des praetoria routiers. Le mot taberna est également polysémique : il ne désigne pas un type particulier d'établissement de bord de route. Une taberna peut relever du secteur public comme du secteur privé. Il en va de même des stabula . Il faut renoncer à donner à ces termes un sens technique qui en justifierait l'utilisation dans une typologie architecturale.

RésuméDepuis une vingtaine d'annees, l'approche archeologique du paysage aux epoques historiques s'est considerablement diversified. Trois etapes sont distinguees. En France, elle a d'abord ete pratiquee par des historiens pour la recherche des cadastres fossiles datant de la pe"riode antique. L'identification de centuriations permettait d'ecrire une histoire de l'appropriation du sol par Rome. Pratiquees d'abord dans un objectif patrimonial, les prospections archeologiques ont pris une importance croissante; les grandes operations d'archeologie preventive qui se sont developpees ces dernieres annees ont permis de multiplier les sondages et de realiser le decapage de grandes surfaces. Une troisieme etape a ete marquee par l'integration de l'archeologie environnementale. Celle-ci fait appel aux geomorphologues pour l'étude des modeles du paysage et des paleobotanistes pour l'histoire de la vegetation naturelle et cultivee. L'histoire des paysages dans la vallee des Baux est presentee comme exemple.

Résumé La documentation relative à l'impact des sociétés antiques sur l'environnement est essentiellement d'ordre archéologique. Elle est liée au développement d'une forme nouvelle des disciplines archéologiques, l'archéologie des paysages, dont l'objet est précisément la relation homme/milieu. Par sa fragilité, le milieu méditerranéen permet ce type de recherche. Cet article présente une série d'exemples de l'impact de la Romanisation enregistrés par les dépôts sédi- mentaires en Gaule du Sud. Il a pu exister des exemples de dégradation rapide du milieu sous l'effet d'activités agricoles ou artisanales qui constituent des précédents à ce que connaissent nos sociétés. Mais le principal intérêt que présente une observation dans la « longue durée » est de mettre en évidence l'importance du seuil franchi avec l'âge industriel.
