We analyze the various forms of humor in the political communiqués written by Subcommander Marcos' (1994-) and in the brief novel Desvanecidos difuntos (1991), which his friend Paco Ignacio Taibo II published a few years before the Zapatista uprising. The two writers resort to absurd and ironic humor and a light form of joking to criticize the Mexican state and point out its responsibility for the violence that has devastated the country for decades. On the other hand, another Mexican writer, Juan Pablo Villalobos, in his novel No voy a pedirle a nadie que me crea (2016) directs his humorous arrows not only against the official institutions that represent the State but also against characters who embody Civil Society. In this way he points out the co-responsibility of the latter in the sad conjuncture of the present.

; The novel The Uncomfortable Dead, written by subcomandante Marcos and Paco Ignacio Taibo includes a scene which describes a football match between the indigenous inhabitants of Chiapas and the foreign observers which sympathise with the Zapatista cause. This scene can be interpreted in various ways: as a metaphor of the struggle in Chiapas between the Zapatistas and the government, but at the same time as a mise en abyme of the plot of the novel, which tells the story of two antagonistic gangs, one of them attempting to occupy the other's territory. In addition, the football match can be associated with the act of writing the novel, and more in particular with the collaboration between its two authors. In the other text which marks the return of the Zapatistas on the political scene in 2005, Marcos also makes use of imagery related to football, which is one of the primary means of affirming the collective Mexican identity. In this way, he presents the Zapatista army as pre-eminently popular, because it shares with the living forces of the nation one of the most important markers of Mexican identity. At the same time, as football is one of the most universal forms of popular entertainment, this imagery is also fit to capture the sympathy of an international public. ; Peer reviewed

ABSTRACT- The Relatos del Viejo Antonio (1998) by Subcomandante Marcos are based on an antagonism between the Indians and the non-indians. This antagonism is at odds with the EZLN stance in favour of a pluri-ethnic society. At the same time, the language used in the tales is more in conformity with this pluri-ethnic position. This tension in the zapatist discourse can be interpreted as a conflict between utopia and reality, in the sense that the discrimination of the indigenous population is conducive to a rhetorics of idealisation while the future construction of society requires a more hybrid discourse.

A nation-state confronted by sub-national claims may opt for a corporatist or managerial approach, where the centre accommodates ethnic and regional claims and at the same time develops an identity politics of multicultural or multination nationalism. In this way, it is attempted to re-legitimise the nation as a community that allows different cultural and ethnic groups to live together in harmony. On the basis of a comparative analysis of the regular public addresses of the monarchs in the period 1990-2000, this article investigates to what extent Belgium and Spain have adopted such a strategy of multicultural nationalism. It is shown that multiculturalism is the core value of the Belgian nationalist discourse, in the sense that the Belgian nation is constantly defined in terms of its constituent cultural segments. The Spanish nationalist discourse is predominantly unitary and hardly reflects the compound nature of the state. Democracy is the core value of this discourse. It is argued that the more unitary representation of the Spanish nation is due to the lack of elitist consensus about the compound nature of the state and the dominant position of Hispanic culture.
