The clinical syndrome of sepsis is common, increasing in incidence and responsible for as many deaths annually as ischaemic heart disease. Two recent interventional trials have demonstrated that early recognition and intervention can result in dramatic reductions in acute (28-day) mortality. This roundtable discussion was convened to identify ways in which these recent advances could be translated into clinical practice. The first obstacle surrounds the woolly and confusing terminology surrounding 'sepsis' with the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) model largely discredited. Overcoming this should facilitate wider recognition, not only among health care providers (in particular those working in acute specialties outside intensive care units [ICUs]) but also politicians and the general public. Such education is vital if early recognition and intervention are to be successfully implemented.

The main objective of this paper is to contribute to explaining the outstanding business success among the Asian diaspora in East Africa as compared to the native African population. Taking an actors's point of view, the business context is analysed against a theoretical background of alien entrepreneurship and a presentation of the history of Asians in the region. A main argument is that the alien entrepreneurs are in a better position to enact their business context in a manner favourable for success, based on ethnic resources such as kinship, education and price, mobility and communication and social networking. The Internet, the fastest growing technology in society, has been driven by the public's hunger for fast, cheap communication. The modern patient increasingly presents to their doctor with an Internet diagnosis and treatment plan, obtained from a website with inaccurate or highly biased information. Doctors have limited access to the Internet in the workplace and often find it difficult to answer specific medical questions using routine search engines. The Internet provides an unparalleled opportunity to revolutionise medical education, bedside decision-making, patient records and communication between professionals and patients. Coordination between government, the Royal Colleges and the healthcare industry is required to develop the necessary software and hardware to help doctors and patients use the Internet to their advantage.

Kroz realizaciju ovog zadatka izvršeno je fizičko povezivanje računara u mrežu i obezbeđenje logičkog funkcionisanja sistema na tri nivoa (komandni, upravni i izvršni nivo), projektovanje softverskih aplikacija uz korišćenje modernih softverskih alata, edukacija profesionalnih vojnih lica (PVL) za rad na personalnim računarima (PC) i održavanje informatičke opreme. ; We presented the results of the realization of the logistic information system. While fulfilling this task we connected computers physically and succored logical functioning of the system on three levels (command management and execution level). We designed software, using modern software development tools and worked on the education of professional military officials for PC using and basic maintenance of computer equipment.

This article explores some of the most important links between political communication, democracy, & neopopulism. It states that there is a close relationship between the political regime & the predominant models of political communication, ie, the extent to which the latter promote consensus, exclusion, &/or manipulation & the extent to which the former facilitates information dissemination & accountability of public officials, as well as an independent mass media. The article concludes that the growing weight of political marketing during electoral processes & throughout the political activities does not always entail positive influence. Although modern political communication has contributed to the education of socially & geographically isolated groups, media exposure has often meant trivialization of political issues & political apathy. 29 References. Through the cognitive process of moral disengagement, people make excuses for inflicting suffering on others while maintaining a clear conscience. The "Peace Test" scale to measure moral disengagement in support for war was tested in surveys of medical, university, & secondary school students in 21 nations. The scale showed acceptable reliability & was a valid predictor of opinions about specific military threats. Although the survey sites were not representative of nations, mean scale scores among high school students were related to national levels of defense spending. Moral disengagement is a valid tool for peace psychologists because it can help evaluate education efforts to increase support for peace. 1 Table, 2 Figures, 2 Appendixes, 13 References. Examines the influence of Israeli historian Benny Morris's work for contemporary understandings of the 1948 Palestinian exodus. Breaking with the official Israeli position that the exodus was voluntary, Morris countered that the Israeli military had, either directly or indirectly, forced the refugees to leave. Morris's views helped shape the current debate over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as affecting Israeli historiography & education, & molding public attitudes about a sovereign Palestinian state. Yet in recent years, Morris has revised his position on the coercive nature of the exodus. In the wake of the collapse of the July 2000 Camp David meetings & the ensuing, bloody intifada, Morris now emphatically opposes the Palestinian right of return for refugees. 1 photograph. The extent of transnationalism practiced by the children of immigrant populations in the contemporary US are examined. An overview of the notion of transnationalism is presented, emphasizing the various social, economic, & political relations that migrant populations establish with their parents' countries of origin. After considering the demographics of second-generation migrant population members, literature that has illustrated how various factors -- race, education, acculturation pressures -- have impacted such people's lives is reviewed. Articles that investigate second-generation populations' engagement in sundry transnational practices, the definition of immigrant generations, immigrant generation members' influence upon second-generation members' lives, & second-generation members' incorporation of parents' country-of-origin identities into their own self-identities are introduced. 77 References. Data from the CA Vital Statistics Birth Records are drawn on to analyze patterns of multiracial-multiethnic births in that state, 1982-1999, in terms of racial/ethnic group size & maternal age & education, & to construct a profile of the proportion of these newborns by ethnic-racial group. The impact of the continuation of CA's high rate of immigration on multiracial-multiethnic births is explored, acknowledging the influence of factors such as country of origin, generational effects, residential segregation, group size, & intermarriage. Analysis reveals the rapid & continuing growth of the state's multiracial Hispanic population; implications of this & other trends for the future of the state's demographic composition -- & policies based on it -- are discussed. 8 Figures, 22 References. Deeds and decisions made by Lithuanian politicians and public servants are deserving greater public and mass media attention whenever before.Authors directs readers attention to the aspects of significance of ethics in public administration, characterizes the situation of ethics in contemporaryLithuania. Ethical dimension in Lithuanian politics and administration is underestimated. Lithuania has several laws which define ethical principles forpublic servants, prohibit the conflict of interest etc. Laws without their effective implementation are worthless. Professional code of ethics for politiciansand public servants, ethical education and training could help to create ethical climate and ensure public trust which are very important for democracy.Authors concludes that ethical politics and administration in Lithuania could be reached by formulating ethical strategy on the state level.

The data were collected from a sample of 266 subjects comprising management students and practitioners in Sydney, Australia. The cognitive moral development stages of the subjects were examined using the defining issue test. Consistent with prior research, age, education, religious affiliation and religious commitment were found to have influenced moral judgement of the respondents. Vocation, gender and the firm ownership did not seem to influence the moral judgement levels. Students and practitioners demonstrated the same level of sensitivity to ethical dilemmas. A comparison of the data with similar findings in the USA revealed a marked difference between the Australian and the US subjects. Implication of the findings and directions for future research are discussed in the paper.

This study examines the trend in pesticide use in Brazil in the 1990s in the context of agroindustrialization and globalization (trade liberalization). It also seeks to document the environmental costs and human health hazard associated with pesticide use in Brazil. Results from time series data indicate that agricultural trade liberalization has led to increased pesticide use in Brazil, particularly in export crops. Results from cross-section municipality-level data point to higher incidence of pesticide use in municipalities with high income, higher levels of education, large-size farms, predominance of export crops, and with high prevalence of sharecropping. Finally, the study finds that Brazil's agricultural growth in the era of trade liberalization has been clouded by serious human health problems and environmental damage caused by pesticide use.

This paper examines gender issues in natural resource management, based on the experience of mining in the Kumaon, Uttaranchal. The method of analysis followed attempts a breakdown of activity patterns and responsibilities by gender. This is used to identify who gains and who loses with different patterns of resource use. It is observed that women's protests against mining in this area make the point that the disruption of traditional livelihoods has weakened the ecosys tem. Some general observations on appropriate interventions for sustainable resource use and development are derived from this. It is argued that local communities as well as policy makers need much more information and education on the implications of ecosystem health for communities.
