"From fringe conspiracy theories to 'alternative facts', a timely look at how we arrived in the 'fake news' era. Would your younger self believe the news of today? An entire city block blown up by a suicide bomber on Christmas Day because he believed phone towers spread disease. A Representative elected to the US Congress on a platform that Democrats are secretly harvesting an anti-aging chemical from the blood of abused children. Angry rioters in furs and horns overrun the Capitol in a bloody carnage of insurrection. The Prime Minister of Australia employing the wife of his friend who fronts a group the FBI has declared terrorists. A global pandemic which, even as they lie dying from it, people refuse to believe exists. Many who sat in shocked disbelief as these events beamed around the world asked the same question: 'How did we get here?' For those rioters, it was the culmination of a journey of online radicalisation that began with the weaponisation of disinformation by their political leaders and outrageously biased 'news' commentators. Facts and Other Lies puts fake news in its historical context and explains how disinformation has fractured society, even threatening democracy itself. It explains why disinformation is so potent and so hard to stop, and what we can do to help prevent its proliferation in Australia - where politicians and shock jocks are already operating from the same dark playbook."
This edited volume brings together contributions on disability studies organized around two themes: literary and sociological aspects. The contributors include academics, disability activists, and researchers from within and outside the Indian periphery. While the book strengthens the disability discourse and contributes to building academic scholarship on this subject, it also promotes disability activism by giving space to both direct practitioners and persons with disabilities. The chapters discuss various analytical and literary aspects of the marginalization experienced by the disabled community and bring forth new and elaborate perspectives. It draws connections across multiple identities and includes personal narratives across nations, cultures and societies. It is an excellent research resource on disability studies in India for scholars and students in the area of humanities, education, law, sociology and social work, while at the same time also addressing the global context
This exploratory, diachronic study compares the politics of Islamisation, which have undergone different patterns of developmentin both Nigeria and Malaysia. Islamisation is defined as an ideological translation of Islamism into policies to "Islamise" the state andsociety by expanding the scope of the application of Islamic laws and principles. Islamisation in Malaysia has been implemented steadily and progressively since the 1980s. It involves the "inculcation of Islamic values" in a wide range of aspects of society, including the economy. The Islamic penal code or hudud enactments were legislated in two states, but held in abeyance due to their unconstitutionality. In contrast, Nigeria observed the sudden and erratic implementation of hudud in 12 northern states in 1999, along with other bureaucratic adjustments. Adopting an interpretative case study approach of the comparative method of Arend Lijphart, we explain the two contrastive case studies of the ideological translation of Islamism by analysing the manner in which various political opportunities and structural constraints in the respective cases have shaped the Islamisation process. Data gathering was based on an extensive review of the related body of literature. Analysis was conducted using a social movement theoretical framework based on a structured, focused comparison. The dynamic conceptualisation of the state as a set of institutions, which is continually and dialectically reshaped by contentious processes, captures how the bureaucratisation and judicialisation of Islam have modified the nature of state structures and the structure of political opportunities, which in turn allows for additional channels of influence for Islamic activists.

This book investigates different notions of communitarianism and citizenship, and their application within a number of fields, in particular education, politics and social welfare. Whilst there can be no doubt that most observers regard the responsible conduct of citizens as a goal worth pursuing, difficult problems lie with questions of how, and indeed whether, responsible citizenship can be achieved. This book looks beyond communitarian ideology to investigate more detailed discussion of citizenship in contemporary society

Lawrence Kohlberg first published details of his research on the development of moral judgments in <i>Vita Humana</i> (later titled <i>Human Development</i>). Along with a series of other articles and essays, he greatly influenced research on moral development. He was instrumental in moving the field out of the narrow confines of analyses of psychological mechanisms to inclusion of substantive philosophical definitions of the domain. He persuaded many researchers to take morality seriously as a realm pertaining to people's thinking about how they ought to relate to each other and how social systems should be organized. Although several aspects of Kohlberg's theoretical formulations are now not widely accepted, most researchers (though not all) are concerned with combining epistemological considerations with psychological analyses and view children as possessing moral capacities not solely imposed by adults. One of these theoretical perspectives, discussed in this essay, is based on distinctions among social domains. Problems in current research, especially on morality and neuroscience, that fails to attend to epistemological considerations are discussed.
In this article we examine in‐depth interviews with farmers (n = 159) from nine Corn Belt states. Using a grounded theory approach, we identified a "soil stewardship ethic," which exemplifies how farmers are talking about building the long‐term sustainability of their farm operation in light of more variable and extreme weather events. Findings suggest that farmers' shifting relationship with their soil resources may act as a kind of social‐ecological feedback that enables farmers to implement adaptive strategies (e.g., no‐till farming, cover crops) that build resilience in the face of increasingly variable and extreme weather, in contrast to emphasizing short‐term adjustments to production that may lead to greater vulnerability over time. The development of a soil stewardship ethic may help farmers to resolve the problem of an apparent trade‐off between short‐term productivist goals and long‐term conservation goals and in doing so may point toward an emergent aspect of a conservationist identity. Focusing on the message of managing soil health to mitigate weather‐related risks and preserving soil resources for future generations may provide a pragmatic solution for helping farmers to reorient farm production practices, which would have soil building and soil saving at their center.
While performing the tasks for ensuring the inviolability of the state border and protecting the sovereign rights of Ukraine in its adjacent zone and the exclusive (maritime) economic zone, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (hereinafter referred to as the SBGSU) implements the main types of information activities provided by the Law of Ukraine "On Information", such as collection, reception, storage, use, distribution, protection of information and information security. The relevance of research of obtaining information on activities of SBGSU is caused by the declaration of the information component of the Strategy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, of the Integrated Border Management core business and further development of the State Border Service of Ukraine in 2019, and the lack of consistency in the regulation of social relations that arise about receiving information from the SBGSU and the diversity of terminology that reflects this process. The motivating principles of obtaining information in the functioning of the SBGSU are the need to fulfill the tasks set by the state and the society, as well as satisfaction (based on the tasks) of the service needs of all structural subdivisions. Obtaining information should be carried out exclusively within the limits of the current legislation, in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Ukraine. The analysis of which allowed the following generalizations, namely, the receiving of information within the framework of the SBGSU, is: the day-to-day operation of its servicemen and employees, that has a systemic character; is fixed directly or indirectly, as the right and duty of the SBGSU, and is correspondent as the duty of citizens or other subjects of information relations to communicate the relevant data; depends on the effort expended: actively (when there is a goal of obtaining information in the interests of protecting the state border) or passively (when other information communication subjects report, provide or send relevant information); the terms "obtain", "procure", "collect", "receive", etc., reflect how or by which means the information is received; various constructs of the wording, indicating the process of obtaining information, are used. The conducted study allowed to determine the obtaining of information within the scope of the SBGSU as a permanent process that occurs in the course of day-to-day operational activities by receiving, retrieving, collecting, etc. information related to the field of state border protection and the fulfillment of the tasks of the SBGSU.

The article is devoted to the disclosure of the essence of ethical and moral culture of civil servants and local government officials as a socio-professional group and the definition of legal aspects (factors, means and ways) of forming this culture in management processes. It was revealed that the problem of ethics and morality in public administration is not new for Ukraine, but it is still relevant. This is due to the fact that until independence the government considered a civil servant "a cog in a large mechanism", which freed him from compliance with certain ethical norms. Therefore, the emphasis should be on the legal regulation of ethical aspects of civil service and service in local government. After all, the perception of a civil servant as a corrupt person, the cultivation of the idea of possible social and personal harm from their official activities have been circulating among citizens and in the expert community for a long time. It is investigated that the basic rules of ethical behavior combine both universal and specific features and determine the moral and ethical portrait of a modern successful manager. Yes, public service requires mutual honesty and justice; friendliness and sensitivity. Modesty and sincerity allow us to show tolerance, patience towards others; a critical attitude to one's own merits makes it possible to identify shortcomings, and politeness and correctness help in communicating with citizens. The article describes the main features of the ethics of a professional civil servant, which include: professional honor, dignity, justice, tact, professional duty. It is revealed that public administration ethics is a type of managerial ethics, in which based on the study of professional morality of public officials are substantiated value orientations, norms, moral aspects of behavior, relationships between people in the process of public administration, provide practical recommendations that focus on this activity. The list of normative-legal acts of the domestic normative-legal base concerning ethical norms of behavior is generalized. It is noted that the adoption of a code of ethics is a manifestation of the moral freedom of persons who serve the people of Ukraine. And the very fact of creating a code of ethics, its wide discussion within all levels of public administration, the solemn adoption will serve to raise the level of managerial morale and the formation of managerial ethics. Keywords: ethics, rules of ethical conduct, public service, civil servants, local government officials, legal framework, code of ethics ;
Electronic version excludes material for which permission has not been granted by the rights holder ; This research focuses on the study of Mexican comics and films from 1969 to 1976. It uses the language of humour to understand how these media expressed contemporary social and political concerns. After reviewing theories of humour and proposing an eclectic theory to analyse visual sources, three different comic books and four films were examined in order to gain an understanding of the issues that troubled the society at the time. This eclectic theory considered academic approaches from a variety of disciplines, including philosophy, sociology, linguistics, psychology, and others. The theory of humour proposed in this thesis can be used to study humorous visual expressions from other cultures and historical times. Thus, one of the novelties of this research is the proposal of an eclectic theory of humour to study visual culture. A second original contribution of this thesis is that it proposes an approach to social history through the analysis of two relevant cultural manifestations: humour and visual culture. This work also invites us to reflect on Mexican society during the presidency of Luis Echeverría Álvarez, as well as the circumstances of the mass media and the arts, both of which enjoyed some freedom in what was called the apertura democrática. Nevertheless, since some topics were still prickly and difficult, humour helped society discuss them, kept them on the social agenda, and acted as a safety valve to express the discomfort of the members of society. Finally, this thesis considers social manifestations, such as humour, as sources through which to study culture and history; it highlights the relevance of the cultural legacy of comics which have been considered as a sub-cultural product; and it shows how we can use films to discover something new about a specific time and social group.
This edited volume is situated at the intersection of cultural and political geographies and offers innovative reflections on power, colonialism, and anticolonialism in contemporary Palestine and Israel--
In this timely collection, contributors from a number of disciplines discuss neoliberal visions of success, and the subsequent effects they have on the construction of the lifecycle. Frequently mentioned in popular political discourse, the notion of neoliberalism is often deployed as shorthand for the consensus that austerity is necessary and the hard-working individual can survive it. This volume unpicks and interrogates the term by engaging with the interface between the political ubiquity of neoliberal forms and its lived experience in neoliberal societies, cutting across a multiplicity of factors including gender, age, and access to education. Impressive in its wide scope and analysis, Interrogating the Neoliberal Lifecycle presents an informed discussion not only of the limits of the neoliberal paradigm but also of possible alternatives.--
