I generalize Gul and Pesendorfer's (2001) model of temptation to a multi-period framework where preferences are defined over menus of menus rather than over menus of terminal consumptions. This extension can be applied to model preemptive temptations, self-deception, and biased perceptions of subjective uncertainty.
EVEN THOUGH AMERICA'S FOREIGN - POLICY FOUNDATION IS STURDY AND SHOULD NOT BE TAMPERED WITH, AND EVEN THOUGH IN VITUALLY ANY CIRCUMSTANCES THE UNITED STATES WILL WANT TO MAINTAIN ITS ALLIANCES WITH JAPAN AND WESTERN EUROPE, THE FACT REMAINS THAT THE UNITED STATES NEEDS A NEW FOREIGN POLICY STRATEGY. THE THREAT TO AMERICAN NATIONAL SECURITY IS CHANGING, AND THE SUPERSTRUCTURE OF U.S. POLICY, WHICH WAS ERECTED OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS IN RESPONSE TO THAT THREAT IS COLLAPSING. THE UNITED STATES NOW NEEDS TO DEVELOP A NEW SET OF POLICIES THAT REFLECTS THE REALITY OF LIMITED RESOURCES AND THE CHANGING THREAT TO AMERICAN INTERESTS BUT THAT COMMITS IT TO AN ACTIVE ROLE AS THE ONLY TRUE GLOBAL POWER.
The greatest single reason for the swing away from Labour is a change in the soc structure in which the professional, white collar & intermediate groups are growing, & the manual Wc is getting smaller, while its soc outlook is being modified. Changes in educ & in the org of industry, full employment, att's towards trade unions, & the pressure towards conformity & concern with status in the new suburbia are among the factors contributing towards this development. An understanding of the changing soc background is of signif for the presentation & putting over of policy attractively to the electorate, & there is a need for large-scale advertising to overcome the current picture of the Labour Party as a dreary, quarrelsome, austerity-loving group. The genious of the Labour Party will only be revealed if it can adapt itself to the realities of econ & soc change. IPSA.
