The Museum of the City of Cholula, Puebla, Mexico. Permanent installations, opened September 2001.
In the late colonial period, the rural area of Central Mexico was characterized by haciendas, by Spanish-mestic small towns and by indigenous communities, which were defined and composed ethnically according to Spanish law. This study uses microhistorical methods to study the city of Cholula and its rural environment. The focus is on economic processes within the municipalities and interethnic exchange relationships at the individual level. The focus of the study is on Indian households and their scope for economic action. The analysis of the distribution of land ownership in Cholula already shows a high proportion of land ownership in private property, a result that fundamentally contradicts the previous knowledge about the organization of indigenous communities. Their role as a reservoir of labour for the haciendas is well known. This study shows that individual households also produced and marketed significant quantities of different agricultural and industrial products. The proof of the manifold inter-ethnic exchange relationships calls into question the relevance of the traditional description categories "Indian" and "Spanish" for the rural areas of Central Mexico and points out numerous parallels to European agricultural societies of the 18th century.

AbstractFor eight years the Proyecto de conservación e investigación de la pintura mural y otros acabados arquitectónicos de la zona arqueológica de Cholula, Puebla, has had as one of its objectives, the recording, study and preservation of the murals at the archaeological zone of Cholula. However, the insufficient maintenance of the nearby pre-Hispanic buildings and of the building that houses the murals Los Bebedores, and the mural Barras y Estrellas has generated physical conditions that are not conducive to the preservation of this heritage. Consequently, during 2015 and 2016 a system to protect sections on risk of both murals was implemented, based on the construction of a wall and filled with earth (reburial or backfilling). This document presents the characteristics of the protection system and describes the reason that promoted a change from a temporary protection to a permanent one in consideration of physical, social, and political issues.

; The practice of politics in post-revolutionary Mexico sought to establish a common identity within the framework as part of an illusory community represented by the Mexican nation. The political project of the State deploys multiple attempts to approach the post-revolutionary peasants and workers, on regulating new forms of ownership and work processes. The blossoming of the textile industry in the region of Cholula, Puebla polarized different groups that had settled there. ; Grupo de Investigación Antropología y Filosofía (SEJ-126). This dissertation examines the political and spiritual implications of the Franciscan presence in sixteenth-century Cholollan, renamed San Pedro Cholula by the Spaniards, reading the friars' evangelizing project in light of the Order's foundational missionary mandate, its millenarian tendencies, its 1517 Reform, and its desire to replenish the numbers of faithful leaving the Church with the advent of Protestantism. Based on printed Franciscan chronicles and materials from municipal, judicial, notarial, state, and national archives in Mexico and Spain, this project provides the first detailed study of the Franciscan appropriation of this Mesoamerican sacred site. Because the Sons of St. Francis were the only Order in colonial Cholula, their efforts resulted in a very particular Franciscan charism more than a general early modern Mediterranean Catholicism. The Franciscan establishment in Cholollan officially began in late 1528 or early 1529 with the arrival of guardian fray Alonso Xurez. Given its centuries-old sacred legacy, its identity as a site of spiritual and thus political legitimation, and its numerous teocalli, or indigenous temples, the polity would prove irresistible to the Franciscans. Because of the elaborate daily and seasonal rituals performed by the native Cholulteca, as well as the similarities between certain Nahua rites and Catholic sacraments, the friars believed they had discovered a people perfectly poised to receive and internalize Christianity. Re-naming the altepetl San Pedro Cholula after St. Peter, the first Pope, the mendicants harkened back to Rome and the days of the Primitive Church, when Christianity existed in its purest form. Indeed, the friars believed that Cholula would become a "new Rome" in New Spain, a spiritual center across the Atlantic from which they would launch their evangelization of central Mexico. Ironically, Franciscan efforts to re-imagine Cholula's past into a Catholic present ensured the continuity of its centuries-old spiritual and political dominance in the region - rivaling even the recently-founded Spanish city of Puebla - albeit as a Nahua-Christian city.

AbstractThis ethnographic research examines practices related to alcohol consumption in the traditional area of San Andrés Cholula, namely, in the region comprised of the eight neighborhoods participating in the "cargo system," a religious and socio‐spatial institution responsible for organizing ecclesiastical festivities. Using anthropological fieldwork as the research methodology, it observes how male alcoholization, shielded by popular religiosity and supported by local authorities, institutionalizes gender practices that legitimize violence. These practices, veiled under the guise of "traditions," act to the detriment of the living conditions of local women. In this context, the lens of postcolonial feminism enables the understanding of women's responses and actions in the face of impositions and demands from the local gender regime.
