; Mining has been for centuries an important activity in Slovenia. It is economically relevant, and has also had a strong effect on the region, and the process of mining. In time it came to depletion, and also to closing down of the mines. Which is why the settlements around the mines were gradually given up, and abandoned. After closing down the mines, the question occurred about which potentials the regions still have, with what, and in what way they could be made more interesting again. The theoretical background was formed by the works of the topic of Post-Mining Regions, and also by the today's mining situation along with the legislation in this region of Slovenia. The data which was important for further analysis was collected on the basis of interviews, field work, and studying technical literature. In this master's thesis, the current economic and social situation of both regions is presented on the basis of the collected data, and possibilities for the further development are presented with the help of existing examples from around the world as well as from my own approaches to solution. In the theoretical regard it was clarified what Post-Mining-Regions are, which potentials they offer, and how they can be used in the best way.Regarding the historical and geographical aspects, it is apparent that mining greatly affected the regional development. According to the Slovenian legislation, the landscape where the mining took place has to be brought back to the former state through redevelopment, or recultivated to such extent that it can be used for other purposes again. From the regional development plans, it can be seen that mining will play an important role in the further development of the Šalek Valley, and Zasavje. The SWOT analysis revealed that the most potential lies in tourism, since in that way the mining legacy can be reused in the best way.According to the studies, the Šalek Valley reveals features that make up a Post-Mining Region, since the old mining areas have already been redeveloped, and reused for new purposes, which is an important feature of Post-Mining Regions. Zasavje, on the other hand, is still at the beginning of the process of becoming a Post-Mining region. Currently, the focus lies more on the closing of mines than on the question about how to use the mining legacy in the best way. If both regions worked stronger on tourism, Slovenia would have two actual Post-Mining Regions.
; The aim of this thesis is to present female performers in contemporary cabaret in Styria. First of all, definitions as well as the history of this artistic genre are introduced. The general part focuses on the gender aspect of cabaret shows and on the impact of the Styrian region on the shows. The main goal is, on the one hand, to show the different types of cabaret with female performers and, on the other hand, to analyze their functions and methods of creating humor. The analysis is based on contemporary cabaret shows performed in Styria. For this purpose video material was observed and then transcribed. Stage roles and types of female cabaret artists in present Styria are demonstrated. As the topic is still very new and unexplored, it has been very hard to find a general definition for cabaret. Additionally, it could be noticed that there is still a lack of literature in this field of research. ^Furthermore, the existing literature on the topic strongly relates to male cabaret performers, whereas female performers remain mostly unmentioned. This condition might even give the impression that there are no female cabaret artists at all. In the past, a womans place was in the kitchen, doing all the housework, which is grounded in the societal model of times past. In the 17th century, female emancipation was inhibited by the social conventions and rules and one of them forbid women to laugh in public. This is only one example to show that womens path to succeed in cabaret was hard in the past. Moreover, it is still far from easy nowadays for women to be successful in cabaret. On stage, women used to be in the minority and they were to play traditional female stereotypes. This is still the case in the cabaret forms 'ensemble and 'male-female-duet. ^It has to be mentioned that women also tend to focus on typical female content when they perform in a cabaret solo or trio. Topics such as politics are almost completely being excluded. However, cabaret is constantly a subject to change. Nowadays, there are more and more female cabaret artists that are already successful on stage and many of them are still very young. It has to be considered that women have always been part of cabaret shows right from the beginning. Moreover, female performers have become absolutely essential in cabaret. Women often still do not play the same roles as men and the female gender has different attitudes on stage. It can be concluded that there are still some gender differences in cabaret but this situation can also be regarded as advantageous.
; The present study deals with analyzing the actor constellations and power relations in the context of neoliberal forms of urban space production. Specifically, the economic and political logics and dynamics in the process of urban expansion in Santiago de Chile are examined using the example of the planning and implementation of private megaprojects as case studies. These projects, which are based on the principles of New Urbanism, have experienced a boom in Santiago since the mid-1990s and changed both the physical-material as well as the institutional landscapes fundamentally. In the literature this form of private urban development has so far been interpreted mainly as a direct impact of processes of globalization and neoliberalization. In this work, this discussion is taken up and deepened both theoretically and empirically. First, a theoretical framework is developed, which takes into account elements from Urban Political Economy as well as post-structuralist approaches in order to analytically address the intersection of materiality and discourse in the process of space production. In two case study communities in Santiago, where a large number of mega projects are developed, then the planning and negotiation processes are reconstructed and interpreted, with the help of methods of qualitative social research (semi-structured interviews, participant observation and text analysis). In terms of results, it can be noted that the boom of megaprojects is closely related to the neoliberalization policies under Pinochet. Especially those economic groups that greatly benefited from the glocalization and privatization strategies since the 1980s have been entering successively the business of land development. The megaprojects are in that context a specific strategy to innovatively connect three aspects with respect to the production of the built environment – land speculation, real estate production and capital switching – what is referred to as 'structural speculation'. While the land developers and connected economic groups have managed to inscribe their investment interests in the institutional landscape through the so-called 'conditioned planning', a fine grained reconstruction of the development of the phenomenon and of the conflicting interests and strategies at play reveals internal contradictions and conflicts between different land developers and fractions of capital on the one hand and various government institutions on the other side. What these empirical findings imply on a theoretical level is that globalization and neoliberalization in the field of urban development processes are nor one-way streets nor processes without a subject. Economic logics are broken by political dynamics and vice versa. At the interface of politics and business interests in urban development lies the planning system within which multiple conflicts are articulated whose outcomes are always contingent.
; In ZJapanR/J.Japan.L. 31 (2011), Julius Weitzdörfer published a thorough treatise on the liability issues connected with the Fukushima nuclear accident. As a complement to his considerations, this article deals with the international aspects of the liability case. Nuclear liability law is based on the international nuclear liability Conventions (i.e. the Paris Convention, the Vienna Convention, and the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage) and is thus a field of law that is internationally harmonized to a great extent. Japan is not a party to any of the Conventions, but those principles nevertheless became elements of the national legislation of Japan and of numerous other non-contracting states. Even without formal treaty obligations, the Japanese nuclear liability law forms an integral part of the international nuclear liability regime. Compensating Fukushima claims at the national Japanese level also means testing the international liability principles. Among the leading international liability principles are a unified definition of the 'nuclear incident' that triggers liability, the principle of liability without fault on the part of the operator of a nuclear installation, and the principle of exclusive liability of the operator of a nuclear installation (legal channelling of liability). If one looks at the corresponding concepts of the Japanese law a little more closely, there might be doubts as to whether the Japanese legislator understands these principles identically to the international interpretation. In particular, the exclusive liability of the operator of a nuclear installation does not entirely exclude claims for compensation based on other liability provisions. But that is exactly the purpose of legal channelling of liability. The exoneration under Japanese law from liability for damage caused by a grave natural disaster of an exceptional character is problematic. This exoneration and the exoneration from liability for damage due to hostilities, etc. are both legally unsound and, from a practical and political point of view, without any use. They should be deleted from both the Japanese law and the international conventions. The Japanese nuclear liability law, on the other hand, provides a claims handling procedure that might be used as an example at the international level. The law establishes a Claims Reconciliation Committee to optionally settle claims out of court. Especially in mass tort litigations, such a procedure might speed up the payment of compensation and contribute to regaining social and political peace. There are signals that Japan will adhere to the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage in the near future. This would require its nuclear liability legislation to comply with the Annex to that Convention. It is questionable whether there is such compliance.
; The Organization of the Structural Space in Postclassic Settlement Centres of the Northern Maya Lowlands In this analysis three centres of the Middle and Late Postclassic from the northern Maya lowlands are investigated with respect to the organisation of their structural space. "Structural space" is defined by an operative surface and must be surrounded by at least the half by built-up borders. It manifests itself usually in the architecture. The investigation dealt mainly with the question of whether, despite the visual differences existing among the three centres, similar or mutual aspects in the settlement structure are present and, if appropriate, how these are formed. This was connected to the question of the relationships and functions of structural spaces. Closely related to this thematic complex was the question of the efficiency of different methods of settlement analysis, when the structural feature is available as the almost exclusive source of information. Following an in-depth discussion of what space, especially structural space is or can be, and how it is represented in its peculiarities in the area under consideration, the centres of Mayapan, Tulum and San Gervasio on Cozumel were analysed. Simultaneously, 14 different methods for analysing structural spaces were tested for their applicability to postclassic Maya archaeology. The most important aspect of the theoretical basis was understanding the relationship of a building with the platform on which it stood and the stairway leading to the platform. In this analysis these elements were regarded als inseparable and were credited to be a more important structural unit than the building alone. This unit was termed "structural complex" and formed the most important basis for the analyses. The results Most of the methods investigated can be regarded as positive for analysing postclassic settlements in the northern Maya lowlands, even though it is advisable to combine them. Through the combination of methods a differentiated view of the organisation of the structural space becomes recognisable and provides important insights into the understanding of the centre (and, therefore, of the whole settlement, too), even if further information on the interpretation (e.g. through pottery analysis) is insufficiently present. One of the most significant methods in this respect is the area-height-ratio; this allows firm results even under extremely bad conditions and when lacking the exact order of structural spaces within the building complex. The intersettlement comparisons of the various analytical results reveal in several ways that the organisation of the structural area within the centre was not arbitrary. Rather, one finds in the centres two types of "planning": 1.) Regulating the large spatial distribution of distinct functions (also of symbolical type) This exhibits itself especially by incorporating cosmological beliefs which in the centre were architecturally manifested. Practical reasons seem not to have been left unconsidered, though, as seen in the street-like construction in Tulum and in the concentration of "public", mainly "profane" functions in the southern part of the centre in Mayapan. 2.) Regulating the small spatial distribution of structural areas, from built-up and free areas (similar to building regulations) This is recognisable in all three centres in the assemblages of different buildings: In Mayapan and San Gervasio this is particularly evident in the form of groups of buildings of social uniformity, in Tulum something comparable is recognisable at least in part. However, a properly binding plan, in the sense of a restriction, does not exist; the pure existence of building regulations is not equivalent to the presence of a stringent plan prescribed from above. Moreover, in each of the analyses carried out it is recognisable that a not insignificant measure of constructional freedom sometimes existed. The "planning" in the postclassic settlement centres examined therefore stands face-to-face with an "arbitrariness", which, however, does not mean chaos, but rather represents a freedom of decision, by which the owners seem to have been permitted to adapt the precise form and position of the structural areas to their individual situation and personal priorities. This freedom of decision seems not only to have been valid for individual persons or groups of persons, but also for the planning of the settlement centre (in respect of the settlement) as a whole. This is clearly discernible in the connection between structural area and cosmological beliefs. They are arranged differently in the three settlement centres, but are still present in each centre. Building regulations even seem to have been adapted for the focal and individual needs of the specific settlements. The consideration of cosmological belief in the formation of the centres also shows that the most important cosmological beliefs of the (Pre)Classic in the northern Mayan lowlands were known and accepted during the Middle and Late Postclassic too. Moreover, they are so much integrated into the world of the living that they even appear in the organisation of the structural area, which is passed on over extensive chronological and topographical intervals. The different ways of transforming the cosmological beliefs, however, is evidence of the large extent of tolerance involved in the continuation of the traditions. Finally, in each of the centres examined it is discernible that a sharply hierarchical structure of society is improbable. Rather, it seems that several social units of not always completely equal, but certainly of similar hierarchical rank were responsible for the appearance of the centres. This could have been connected to the system of rule described as " multepal ", but indicates at least that, as far as the "élites" are concerned, somewhat more egalitarian social structures may have determined political and social life, than had been the case during the Classic period. In summary one can deduce that the results from the analyses show the salient differences between the individual centres, at the same time, however, reveal that, behind the seemingly irregular distribution of structural areas within the central area, a system of regulations existed, which (a) prescribed building regulations on a large, as well as a small scale, but simultaneously also allowed constructional freedom, (b) is similar in all three centres, (c) stands to a significant degree in the tradition of the classic organisation of the centre. This integrates the postclassic centres of the northern Yucatan both chronologically and topographically into a large cultural context. From the view of the organisation of the structural area fundamental differences (in the sense of a "break") between the Classic and the Postclassic seem not to have existed, even though the external appearance of the architecture varied in the different chronological periods and geographical regions. Nevertheless, the conceptional background in the structural manifestation of life survived over a long period of time.
; This document is a publication based doctoral thesis. The contributions chosen for this project have been published between 2012 and 2016. The contributions were written in the context of two research projects in the field of literacy research. These were the leo. – Level-One survey (short: leo.-survey) and a project on the supporters of low literate adults ("Umfeldstudie"). The leo.-survey was a large-scale-assessment on adult literacy. Primary objective was to extent of low literacy among adults in Germany. Moreover survey results describe the socioeconomic structure of this group of adults. Systematic comparison with results from research among participants in adult basic education shows that common stereotypes on low literate adults should be revised. Additionally it can be shown that the assumption that low literacy would more or less automatically lead to low social, economic or political participation is misleading. The first three contributions based on this survey display this argumentation. It can be shown that low literate adults are not categorically excluded from participation. This can be shown especially by the high quota of employed among the low literate adults and the big proportion of those having left school with a school leaving certificate. The leo.-survey (and consequently: the three publications based on the survey) is part of a chain of a longer tradition of assessment studies (International Adult Literacy Survey, PISA, Skills for Life, PIAAC). Theoretically it is based on a hierarchical model of literacy. Another position towards literacy has been elaborated by the New Literacy Studies. This approach describes literacy as a socially embedded construct which withstands standardized measurement. For the contributions used here the reference to New Literacy Studies is implicit as the contributions have the leo.-survey as a starting point (assessment data) but by the same time try to discuss the possible consequences of low literacy for persons in question under a focus of social embeddedness. The aspect of participation is central for both parts of the doctoral thesis. Participation – like literacy – is a phenomenon which cannot be interpreted as being dichotomous. The three contributions based on the Umfeldstudie refer to the results of the first contributions but they focus on stereotypes and on participation from a different – and innovative – perspective. The survey did not focus on low literate adults themselves but on person from their personal networks (family, workplace, neighborhood etc.). The survey drew on data from a qualitative (n=30) and a quantitative (n=1,511) substudy. On a theoretical basis it referred to the positions of New Literacy Studies as individual types and patterns of interaction (knowledge, communication, support) have been elaborated. This means that it referred on literacy as a social practice. One of the research questions of this survey was if new and more participants in adult basic education could be found via their supporting persons from their networks. Central results of the survey were: There is personal knowledge about low literate adults among a big proportion of adults, i.e. many adults (ca. 40%) know other adults with low or very low literacy skills (Buddeberg 2016). As there are patterns of open communication between low literate adults and their supporters the idea of low literacy as a very strong taboo should be revised. From the quantitative and the qualitative data we could conclude that there is a wide range of different types of support given (from taking over tasks to different ways of adult learning). But the hope of providers of adult basic education that literacy supporters would help to attract more participants seems has to be disappointed (Buddeberg 2015). There is wide knowledge about ABE-classes among the adult population but only few interviewees recommended participation. The reasons for non-recommendation appear quite similar to well-known reasons for non-participation. On reason – which is discussed in Buddeberg/Riekmann 2016 – is the image which adult basic education has in public. Discussing the survey results of both studies shows that common assumptions and stereotypes about low literate adults only apply to a small proportion of this subpopulation. The Leo.-survey could relativize these assumptions on based of socioeconomic features while the Umfeldstudie added the results that the common image of low literate adults being merely recipients of help and support (i.e. helpless and dependent) as well only applies to part of low literate. The idea that low literate adults inevitably lack possibilities of participation under this perspective needs revision. Adult learning for low literate adults often is reduced on non-formal, i.e. classroom based learning arrangements. In reality a variety of learning arrangements appears which includes informal learning settings.
The health status of a prehistoric population can be determined by palaeopathological investigation. The rate of childhood illness correlates with the prevailing living conditions. In this research the type, frequency and causes of meningeal reactions in children's skulls from the following three pre-Columbian populations are investigated: 1) of the North American Piedmont, 2) the large central Mexican cultural center Teotihuacán and 3) the Maya-inhabited eastern lowlands of Yucatán (Jaina) The findings, that were already documented on the diagnostic arches (e.g. skull arches), were entered into the palaeopathology database and evaluated. A poor state of preservation of the skull or skull fragments, however, may limit the evaluation. The cause of disease of some individuals could not be clarified with the macroscopic research alone, so the micro-morphology of these individuals was examined on the basis of thin-ground sections additionally. The distribution of individuals into the age groups fetus, infans Ia, Ib and II illustrates that the majority of individuals died at a young age - possibly as a result of a haemorrhagic or inflammatory meningeal reaction. Conceivable causes of the meningeal reactions are e. g. scurvy, otitis media or a trauma. Taking into consideration the prevailing living conditions in these three populations, the following results on the etiology of meningeal reactions were detected. 1) North American Piedmont: The general health situation of the children of the North American Piedmont was poor during the Late Woodland period. Morphological lesions on the endocranial surfaces and on the impressions of the venous cerebral sinus, arised during a haemorrhagic process, are found frequently (endocranial skull: n = 16/22 = 72.7%; venous cerebral sinus: n = 15/30 = 50%). In eight out of 16 cases the traces of haemorrhagic process at the endocranial surface of the skull are caused by scurvy, while in four out of 16 cases the cause of haemorrhagic process is trauma and in the remaining four of 16 cases it is unknown. By taking the prevailing living conditions under consideration the four individuals with unknown causes of haemorrhagic process scurvy is also conceivable. Archaeological research and written sources indicate that child labor in the fields or in the household was necessary for the survival of the community due to the unfavorable climatic or political situation in the region of the Piedmont for the pre-Columbian period and the early European settlement. In this context may occurred mechanical traumas, which could have led to increased bleeding and increased disease rates among the children. The lack of food resources during the Late Woodland period caused a chronic vitamin C deficiency, which worsened the health of the already sick children by weakening the immune system. 2) Teotihuacán: The high rate of disease among children in Teotihuacán is probably primarily caused by the effects of external trauma. Cerebral haemorrhagic reaction is a possible consequence of birth traumas, accidents at work, falling down, domestic violence (beatings), child maltreatment and also the artificial cranial deformity. In these cases, traces of haemorrhagic reactions can be found at the endocranial surfaces (n = 29.7 / 32.7 = 90.8%), while traces of an unspecific inflammatory process can almost exclusively be found at the impressions of the venous cerebral sinuses (n = 9.3 / 10 = 93%). The traces of haemorrhagic and inflammatory reactions can be explained by traumas. During the prehistoric time most of the children were born in a squatting position. The associated possible fall on to the head of the newborn could lead to death through a haemorrhage into the skull - already in the first months of life (Infans Ia: n = 96.3 / 151.7 = 63.5%). The cause of the high number of abortion (fetus: n = 40.4 / 151.7 = 26.6%) can be found in the heavy physical work of pregnant women, for example in the construction of large buildings (e. g. temples). 3) Jaina: In the child population of Jaina, the number of traces of haemorrhagic reactions on the endocranial surfaces is noticeable (n = 12/26 = 44.8%); these are mostly caused by artificial cranial deformation (n = 8/12 = 66.7%). In many pre-Columbian populations, artificial cranial deformity has been performed to represent cultural values. The inflammatory reactions on the endocranial surfaces (n = 14.8 / 26.8 = 55.2%) are probably consequences of chronic, progressive inflammations of the middle ear region and the paranasal sinuses. These inflammations had also reached the venous cerebral sinus and in several cases caused a life-threatening sinus phlebitis at that time (n = 10/10 = 100%). At all times, there have been connections between human health and the various factors of external living conditions such as nutrition, climate, hygiene, political and economic situation, and social and cultural aspects. As an example, can be called the children from the pre-Columbian populations of North American Piedmont and also children from the Grasshopper Pueblo in Arizona who had scurvy. An unfavorable climate may negatively affect crop yields and promote immunodeficiency through malnutrition (see pre-Columbian Piedmont and Teotihuacán). The development of diseases can also be a result of inadequate hygiene (see pre-Columbian Grasshopper and Germany of the 19th century). Political unrest can negatively influence crop yields or lead into poverty and cause higher disease rates, for example in pre-industrial times in Europe. Examples of how social and cultural structures strongly influence the disease rate of a population are the artificial skull deformation in Teotihuacán, Jaina and Grasshopper, the bandaged girls' feet in China in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the physical strain during the construction of sacred sites in Teotihuacán, child labor on the fields in Piedmont during the Woodland period or in developing countries today. ; 2019-09-26
; The concept of sustainability has by the post-2015 agenda discourse gained a new urgency after it had previously been spread reduced to an meaningless phrase without changing effective content and often devalued to an epitheton ornans. In Government and administration are the understanding and dealing with the principle of sustainability ambivalent: sustainability is spread not as a commitment to sustainability-oriented policies within the limits of ecological barriers, rather than implementing a much less demanding three-pillar model, or three-dimensions model, that is not the meaning of sustainable development, because it goes not only the paradigm shift as the core idea but replacing the model by levelling ideas about simultaneity and balance of economic, environmental and social matters, in legal practice a supposedly equitable relevant balance. The Initiation of development of post-2015 agenda, ore Agenda 2030, which is essentially a time-current concretisation of sustainability, is the most comprehensive project, which the United Nations has set itself since the definition of those objectives. In the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June 2012 with the final declaration "The future we want" a renewed commitment was reached to the vision of sustainable development declining to the Brundtland Report of 1987. The post-2015 agenda should according to the international bargain of 2012 take into account the three dimensions of sustainable development and be geared towards development, especially eliminating extreme poverty and hunger, preserving natural resources and providing by environmental compatible growth a humanely work and adequate social security. The facilitators of the intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 agenda published in July 2015 the final draft for the final document of the UN Summit "the Agenda 2030 transformation of our world for global action", which contains 17 new sustainability goals with targets, intending to clarify the concept of sustainability. However, it may be assumed, that there is the total list of sustainability goals only a concretized utopia that then is in an area far removed from any reality too, if the world were on the whole in a peaceful condition. In science and politics there are different opinions how society can be drive in the direction of sustainable development. Three main paradimen compete, the economic management approach - control of the market, the political science approach - control by networks and the legal approach - control by law and order. In practical, the latter dominantes. Legal control is inevitable, because sustainable development in the global and national context can not be left to the contingencies and uncertainties of political programs, particularly looking politics and political actors to achieve common primarily in economic terms in the short term optimal solutions that are in doubt not or not primarily are sustainable. If sustainable development shall be successful, it is imperative necessary, sustainable development about the political-programmatic level, about declarations in programs and agendas, legally effective enshrine out and fix in norms of international and national law. Moreover, the principle of sustainability requires mandatory - what is but suppressed in the new post-2015 agenda and not expressed in the new sustainability goals - a non utilization in the present for ensuring future use of resources. Sustainable development is necessary and inevitable, but it has to include the nature and its organization in all aspects, because people are able to survive only by a so-understood sustainable development.
; Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been a boom in environmental documentary films in which the "ecological crisis" is illustrated, for example, by deficits in the food industry and livestock farming, food waste, climate change and biodiversity as well as the pros and cons of genetically modified food. Analysing the political goals and aesthetic strategies of such environmental documentaries was the objective of a three-day workshop at the Center of Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at Bielefeld University in May 2019. Bridging the traditional gap between cultural studies and natural sciences by bringing together their respective disciplinary approaches was the overall ambition of the interdisciplinary working group: agricultural science and biology focussed on the production site of environmental knowledge, whilst media studies analysed aesthetic methods of communication. Ethical questions pertaining to the value of nature/ environment or animal/human life were also discussed. As the conversation between the natural sciences and the cultural/media sciences was the main focus of the workshop, a methodology day was held immediately before the analysis of the films, initially presenting and comparing the approaches to the topic from the standpoints of the various disciplines: biology, agricultural science, cultural science (environmental humanities), media science, philosophy and, finally, from the point of view of the filmmakers themselves. During the following interdisciplinary discussions, the topics included whether films are, and always should be, aesthetically designed to convey a specific moral message or whether they should essentially be informative. The analysis of the documentaries produced a consensus on the point that there is, in fact, a wide range of sophistication, complexity, aesthetic quality and affective power in the films. The normative question as to the educational role of documentary films, by contrast, proved controversial: Should films present as balanced a pro and contra as possible and inform impartially or should they use moral arguments to take a stance, engender a sustainable community and thus themselves play a political role? The working group paid particular attention to exploring the natural science, cultural science and media science aspects of one particular documentary, TASTE THE WASTE (2010), as the director, Valentin Thurn, participated in the workshop and had agreed to hold a public lecture one evening. All in all, an interdisciplinary discussion of the individual documentaries proved very advantageous and rewarding: When the same film material offers the opportunity, on the one hand, to map out whether and, potentially, how facts are distorted or wrongly presented whilst, on the other, revealing the audio-visual means that are used to control emotions and, finally, uncovering the value judgements that tacitly underpin the piece, the knowledge deriving from the expertise of the individual disciplines flows into a dialogue that is indispensable for answering questions on media practice and social responsibility.
; Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) is a relatively new sub-discipline of media didactics, and is concerned with the specific learning conditions in mobile media-assisted learning. The available literature in this field of research has to date largely confined itself to praising the innovative potential of mobile technologies without exploring their theoretical and didactic value for foreign language teaching in any depth. The flexibility and portability of mobile applications in particular help to create a virtual learning environment in which a wide range of influencing factors combine. Going out from the Cameroonian structural and social environment, this paper seeks to examine in more detail the aspect of progress through m-learning and to analyse its implementation as well as its transferability on the international scene of German as a foreign language. A quasi-experimental field study was conducted of 40 students of German at the University of Yaoundé 1, who were divided into an experimental and a control group of 20 test persons each. The effects of variation in the type of learning (with or without mobile media) were then measured on the basis of the progress made by the test persons. In addition to performance measurement, learners in the test group who received the experimental treatment were asked for their subjective assessment of the learning application. The results showed that m-learning led to far greater progress in the learners' grammar skills. The use of mobile media also played a clear role in the development of methodological media skills, in improving attention levels, in the development of recall, in broadening motivation, in triggering emotional learning, and in alleviating strain and anxiety. The second survey led in four Cameroonian universities had three main objectives. (i) To give a whole presentation of the situation of m-learning for German as a foreign language in Cameroon; (ii) to analyse the problems, challenges and limits of the implementation of m-learning in Cameroon; (iii) to exemplify the contribution of m-learning in Cameroon in the enhancement of mobile learning processes. Two online-questionnaires for students and teachers of German as foreign language have being administered and seven interviews with experts at the University of Yaoundé 1, the University of Douala, the University of Dschang and the University of Bertoua have being registered. The results showed that m-learning in Cameroon remains in the meantime a political draft and less an ideology oriented to education what is to be expected usually since almost 10 years. Nevertheless, practical even specific methods that speak for the presence of m-learning in the Cameroonian German lessons have developed themselves. These already implemented actions show a predominantly positive perception of mobile teaching and learning processes.
Social and economic inequalities have been a concern in human societies throughout history. In recent years especially wealth and income inequality have been the focus of controversial public, political, and scientific debates. The present thesis seeks to contribute to the ongoing inequality debate by regarding economic inequality from a psychological point of view. Together with Detlef Fetchenhauer, Thomas Schlösser, and Daniel Ehlebracht, I experimentally investigated the psychological determinants and consequences of economic inequality in three different studies. Of the many aspects that inequality comprises, we particularly focused on the association between inequality and justice (Chapter 2 and Chapter 3) as well as its consequences for affects, emotions, and cooperation (Chapter 2 and Chapter 4). In this context, inequality as conceived in Chapter 2 might be most comparable to income inequality because it emerges as a consequence of individuals' performance in a working task. Inequality as conceived in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 might be most comparable to wealth inequality because it is the result of a random assignment to an advantageous or disadvantageous societal position, as is inheritance. Nevertheless, all inequalities examined within this research project are closely related, as they share an economic or monetary basis. In Chapter 2, we experimentally explored the emotional and affective consequences of inequality and their association to justice perceptions. In particular, our participants had to solve effort-based tasks and were assigned to compensation systems referred to as tournament system and equality system. Whereas tournament systems evoked high outcome disparities, equality systems, as they were applied, caused equal outcome distributions. In accordance with prior research (e.g., Schlösser & Fetchenhauer, 2015), we found that the equality system was perceived to be more just than the tournament system. Yet, the effect of the system's justice on affect and emotions was found to be small and both appeared, instead, to be crucially determined by the income and the status of a participant within a given system. For instance, those that benefited from the unequal tournament system perceived the system to be unjust but reported the highest positive affect and the lowest negative affect, anger, and guilt. A possible explanation might be that—within our research paradigm—beneficiaries cannot be hold accountable for the negative consequences of the exogenously determined compensation systems which might detach their justice perceptions and affects as well as emotions. In Chapter 3, we investigated whether a person's personal sensitivity towards justice (i.e., justice sensitivity) predicts equality preferences in democratic systems. Prior research found that unequal distributions are likely to be perceived as unjust (e.g., Deutsch, 1975), hence, we assumed that persons who are truly concerned about the just treatment of others (i.e., other-sensitive persons) hold a genuine preference for equal distributions and low inequality. Persons who show the tendency to predominantly care about a just treatment for themselves (i.e., victim-sensitive persons) were instead assumed to hold no genuine distributional preferences, but rather prefer the degree of inequality within their monetary self-interest. With the help of a so-called welfare state game (e.g., Biniossek & Fetchenhauer, 2007; Lotz & Fetchenhauer, 2012), we measured equality preferences in a democratic decision-making process. Indeed, other-sensitive persons displayed a general preference for low inequality irrespective of whether they financially gained or lost out on that decision. In contrast, victim-sensitive persons preferred either low inequality or high inequality depending on whether the one or the other was in their financial interest. In Chapter 4, we finally investigated the relationship between democratically determined economic inequality and cooperation. Based on previous research which found that in particular endogenously induced inequality harms preconditions for cooperative behavior, such as trust (e.g., Greiner et al., 2012), we assumed that democratically induced inequality hampers cooperation. In accordance with this assumption, we found that groups which previously implemented high inequality through a majority choice displayed relatively low levels of cooperation compared to groups which previously implemented low inequality. In addition, we found that the mechanism driving this effect is likely based on motivated reasoning rather than based on self-selection, similarity, risk, or inequality aversion. These findings suggest that high degrees of inequality harm cooperation in democratic systems. Chapter 5 provides an integrative discussion of the presented empirical research findings, while Chapter 6 suggests possible paths for future research.
; Why are "green" questions so irrelevant in Syria-related research? Beginning with this initial question the author identifies two deficits in Syria's highly centralized national politics: the lack of regions and of a regional development policy as well as the absence of any environmental protection policy which deserves this title. However global warming, demographic change (ongoing population growth combined with further urbanization), sharpening water crisis and increasing shortage of fossil fuels are urgently pressing for a correction of these shortcomings (Chapter 1). The thesis looks into these deficits at the national, regional and local level by elaborating the historic-cultural and physical aspects of the present situation (chapters 2, 3, 4). In order to correct them the author introduces the concept of National Parks as a new type of regional and local development. Syria is perceived as a nation state with five distinctly unique regions characterized by specific hydrological and cultural conditions: Coastal Region (Latakkia/Tartus), North (Aleppo/ Idlep, with Qwiq River), Central (Homs/Hama with Orontes River), South (Damascus and periphery with Barada River, incl. Alsweida/Dara), East (Alraqqa, AlHasaka, Deir Alzor with Euphrates River). A National Park is proposed for each of these regions, however with functions different from those in other states: Here the conservation of comparatively undisturbed biotopes and species and cultural heritage sites has to be combined with their renovation and development. Analysis is based on official documents, academic research (Arab, German, French, and English publications), personal exchanges, on spot investigations in the middle reaches of the Orontes River and within Hama City. Taking these spaces of the Central Region as an example for the regional and local level, it will be documented, that "green cultural heritage" in Islamic/Arab societies should not be seen restricted to a small number of famous gardens, but rather includes a broad range of other green spaces, such as traditional horticulture land use and historical hydro-technology along the middle reaches of the Orontes River. Conservation and redevelopment of these neglected spaces would be of great economic, ecological, cultural and social importance. The tool to achieve this goal would be a representative area of the region eventually to be designated as a National Park. It would serve as an experimental and model area, within which socially acceptable procedures to deal with the conservation and rehabilitation of natural and cultural heritage can be developed. The final chapter is devoted to the discussion of potential options aiming at the establishment and management of a National Park. Field work and writing for this thesis were terminated before the outbreak of open violence in spring 2011. These militant conflicts underline the importance of the proposed concept of regions and national parks for the reconstruction and renovation of Syria.
November 1890 in Kraft trat. ; Japanese constitutional legal history does not constitute part of the obligatory legal curriculum in Hungary. There are limited numbers of researchers and references available throughout the country. However, I am convinced that neither legal history nor comparative constitutional law could be properly interpreted without Japan and its unique legal system and culture. Modern Japanese legal and constitutional history has been thoroughly investigated in the past few decades, also outside Japan by Western scholars. Outstanding references have become available throughout the world. However, it might be added that while a group of works focus primarily on the civil-law traditions that influenced Japan under the Meiji period, another groups of studies put the "current" Japanese Constitution in the centre of their research. All in all, following nearly a decade of research on different aspects of Japanese law, I have the impression that a historical approach concerning Japanese constitutional law does not always enjoy enough attention. Post-war Japan cannot be interpreted without pre-war Japan, or focusing primarily upon the Shōwa Constitution might lead to a one-sided approach. Japan's first written constitution was the Meiji Constitution, or the Constitution of Imperial Japan, which entered into force on 29 November 1890. It was the first modern written constitution of Asia, based upon Prussian traditions. The centre of the Constitution was the emperor, who as the sovereign was sacred and inviolable and was regarded as the religious head of the Shintō state religion. This was also symbolized by the fact that the Imperial Household Law belonged to the exclusive competence of the emperor and stood in equivalent force to the Constitution. The Meiji Constitution established a limited constitutional monarchy but not an absolutist one. However, in the 1920s and 1930s it was severely tested as it ceded the floor for the nearly fourteen years of the Taishō democracy and also for the roughly fourteen years of Shōwa extreme militarism. The post-war constitutional framework corresponds to democratic societies: the three different branches of state powers have their clearly defined competences, responsibilities and checks, whereby none of them is able to carry out all the state powers independently from the others. We can add that the Diet became stronger and politically more significant, the judiciary enjoys more independence and the Cabinet bears political responsibility with all its consequences. Although popular sovereignty is granted by the Constitution and the Diet became the highest organ of the state power and the sole law-making organ, the practical side of popular sovereignty seems to have developed in a unique Japanese way. It follows that not just the person of the emperor was retained in the post-war period, but also some of its pre-war prerogatives continue to be applied as part of unwritten but deeply rooted social traditions.
