"Klassenanalyse ist auch in fortgeschrittenen Industriegesellschaften der Königsweg einer Sozialstrukturanalyse. Doch jeder Versuch, eine Klassenanalyse in fortgeschrittenen Industriegesellschaften durchzuführen, sieht sich vor das Problem gestellt, daß ihr konstitutiver Gegenstand, die Arbeiterklasse, zwar weiterhin statistisch konstruierbar ist, daß diese Klasse aber ihre Zentralität für die Konstitution und Reproduktion der Sozialstruktur fortgeschrittener Industriegesellschaften verloren hat. Es gibt die Arbeiterklasse zwar weiterhin - Lohnarbeit ist geradezu zum universellen Merkmal gesellschaftlicher Arbeit in fortgeschrittenen Industriegesellschaften geworden; doch dieser Existenzform allein lassen sich nicht mehr jene Begrifflichkeiten entnehmen, mit deren Hilfe wir die Sozialstruktur fortgeschrittener Industriegesellschaften als Klassenstruktur beschreiben können. Wenn wir heute soziale Unterschiede, strukturelle Barrieren und Unterscheidungsmerkmale zwischen sozialen Gruppen beschreiben, dann drängt sich der Eindruck geradezu auf, daß die für diese Beschreibung herangezogenen Begriffe der Existenzform einer ganz anderen sozialen Gruppe entnommen sind: nämlich den Gruppen, die wir - ziemlich unscharf - als "Mittelschichten" oder "Mittelklassen" bezeichnen. Der zentrale Begriff der traditionellen Klassenanalyse, der Begriff der "Proletarität", ist spätestens seit den 30er Jahren dieses Jahrhunderts obsolet geworden. Ein anderer - im letzten Jahrhundert geprägter und zunächst negativ besetzter - Begriff scheint eher die reale Existenzform dieser "Mittelklassen" zu treffen: nämlich der Begriff des "Kleinbürgertums".

In dem Beitrag wird das Spezifikum des Bourdieuschen Zugangs zur Klassenanalyse als eine dreifache kulturtheoretische Brechung der traditionellen Klassentheorie bestimmt: Sie bricht (1) mit der Trennung von Basis und Überbau in der Klassenanalyse; sie integriert (2) die Analyse des Klassenhandelns in eine Theorie klassenspezifischer kultureller Praktiken; und sie analysiert (3) die theoretische Beschreibung einer Klassenstruktur selbst noch als ein Moment dieser Klassenstruktur. Diese dreifache Brechung wird diskutiert, um dann das damit verbundene Neue genauer zu bestimmen. Die erste kulturtheoretische Brechung der traditionellen Klassentheorie ist mit dem Versuch verbunden, die berufsförmige Konstitution von Klassenlagen zum Schlüssel der Klassenstruktur moderner Gesellschaften zu machen. Die empirische Annahme, die diese Brechung ermöglicht, lautet: Das Heben eines Berufs wird zunehmend über kulturelle Ressourcen gesteuert. Die zweite kulturtheoretische Brechung der traditionellen Klassenanalyse hat mit dem Problem zu tun, wie objektive Klassenlagen, die zunehmend über kulturelles Kapital konstituiert werden, reproduziert werden. Die dritte kulturtheoretische Brechung besteht darin, den Diskurs über soziale Klassen selbst als einen Teil der Klassenrealität zu interpretieren. Es wird herausgearbeitet, daß die kulturtheoretische Brechung des Klassenbegriffs es Bourdieu erlaubt, an die Stelle des traditionellen substantialistischen Klassenbegriffs einen konstruktivistischen Begriff zu setzen und damit die Klassenstruktur moderner Gesellschaften sichtbar zu machen. Durch die Entwicklung von Staat und Demokratie ist es in den westeuropäischen Gesellschaften schwierig geworden, an dem Begriff nationaler Identität als der Identifikation mit dem Staat festzuhalten. Der Autor zeigt, daß sowohl in der französischen als auch in der deutschen Gesellschaft neue soziokulturelle Identitätsformen entstehen, die die nationale Identität ersetzen, verschieben oder relativieren. Die neuen sozialen Bewegungen werden als ein gesellschaftlicher Lernprozeß interpretiert, in dessen Verlauf neben den fortbestehenden alten Identitäten neue Identitätsvorstellungen entstehen. The public sphere is the site where the collective will of the people is formed. The thesis is that to the extent that the people are constructed as entities that pre-exist their collective will, the public sphere contributes to fostering the evil among a people and between the people. This is discussed using the cases of nationalism, sovereigntism and populism. The narrative of Pandora's box provides the analytical leverage for retelling the theory of the public sphere. The story is that after the evils escaped Pandora's box, hope remained. This leads to two propositions: hope as preventing the closing off of the future of a people and hope as fostering collective learning processes that rectify the evils. These propositions provide the ground for a critical theory of the public sphere in which the force of the better argument is insufficient to explain the capability of a people to rectify the bad. It is a theory in which social relations matter that turn individuals into a people beyond national, statist or populist containers, making a people that is open to define and redefine itself in collective learning processes.

The article argues that the 'crisis of Europe', triggered by market and governance dysfunctionalities (summarized as the Euro crisis), represents a 'critical moment' in the evolution of a European society. This society so far does not offer much resistance to such critical moments which is due to its incapacity to form a demos capable of acting together. The existing European society – and this is the basic claim – is nothing but the sum of individuals living in 'sub-European' (mainly national) groups. The evolution triggered by this critical situation opens pathways to turn these peoples of Europe into something more than being a sum of peoples governed by supranational bureaucracies. To decipher such processes a model is presented using Hirschman's idea of exit, voice and loyalty as mechanisms to generate social ties. Two points arise as crucial. The first is the observation that national societies which continue to provide foundational claims for people have turned into interest groups in the context of the European Union. This undermines not only the ontological nationalism still dominating the self-presentation of national societies in Europe, but it also offers evolutionary paths towards a society beyond national foundational claims in Europe. Yet it also provokes reactive processes such as the return to the self-contained nation (or even ethnic group). This is the core of the crisis of Europe. The systemic crises of the state and the market in Europe are speeding up an evolutionary process of people-making, the outcome of which could be either the regression to a people with foundational identities or to a people without foundational identities. The latter will be described as a postnational society, which would make an emerging European society the first really modern society.

The paper addresses the phenomenon of civil societies turning into uncivil societies and the capacity of civil societies for self-repair. Confronted with the recent events of the rise and fall of civil society in the "Arab Spring" and in the Ukrainian Maidan movement a conceptual framework is offered for accounting for such rise and fall. It starts with the paradox that participation in public debate equally produces civil and uncivil outcomes, thus taking up the classic thesis of the "fall of reason" formulated in the tradition of "critical theory" on the "dialectics of enlightenment". Such "dialectics" results from the interplay of three mechanisms that shape the making of a civil society: the rule of law, the market and the forum. These mechanisms have their specific historical legacy in political and social philosophy. Civil society praised by some as the outcome of the rule of law, by others as the outcome of free markets and by others as the outcome of free speech, empirically does not stand up to these normative expectations. These mechanisms produce "perverse effects", grasped by the metaphor of monsters representing the rule of law and the market: Leviathan (the perverse effects of the rule of law) and Behemoth (the perverse of the market). These perverse effects cumulate in the emergence of uncivil society as the apotheosis of unreason. Fascism is a case for the perverse effects of public communication and political mobilization of people. After identifying the third monster, I will put forward the argument that the forum works not only as mechanism of repairing the rule of law and the market, but also as a "mechanism of self-repair" of civil so­ciety
