Abstract

The book is explicitly directed at researchers conducting applied social research based on ethnographic approaches to the study of modern institutions and social services for people with cognitive difficulties. It has been the ambition to deliver a comprehensive introduction to the issues one has to address when recommending ethnographic approaches to political actors and mediating between political demands and the premises of scientific judgement. As such it might also be useful to officials who want to know what kind of insight ethnographic research can deliver when they want to change institutional processes to the benefit of the people who are dependent on the workings of institutional services. ; This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the methodological, theoretical, and meta-theoretical considerations and guidelines involved in undertaking institutional ethnographic work involving people with cognitive and communicative disabilities. It presents a coherent platform for integrating theory and method built on classical and recent anthropological and sociological theory as well as classic and recent methodological considerations within the ethnographic tradition. Furthermore, it introduces readers to the challenging work of understanding the lifeworld of people who cannot express themselves in ordinary ways or who are deeply stigmatised and oppressed by dominating discourses telling them how to understand and define their role in society.
