Abstract

How important is the concept of "Republican title" in the American Revolution? American historiographic debate is inconclusive. For some historians, the main motivation of the founding fathers was their personal financial interest; for others, the revolution and its constitutional realisation are only the result of chance or good opportunities; last but not least, everything is about ideas, and 'revolutionary ideology' is nothing more than a restoration, at the time of the Enlightenment, of a humanist speech inherited from the Italian Renaissance etreinterpreted by the British revolutionary tradition, but it would be too simple to say that American larevolution marks the end of a 'classic era' of politics. The ancient homo civicus is accompanied by a homo oeconomicus, which acts in the name of the fundamental values of emerging duliberalism and Protestant ethics. The founders of the US Republic were 'extraordinary men', in the meaning given to that term by Rousseau in the Social Contract, since they had the right, in breach of the authority conferred on them, to invent corporate rules. ; Quelle importance donner à la notion de « vertu républicaine » dans la Révolution américaine ?
