Le vêtement professionnel et l'inspection du travail, entre normes et pratiques

International audience At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, when the rules and the professional norms had to be established, the question of the clothing is a more carefully discussed question. We can find an inventory of these rules in the annals of the French Health and Safety Inspection. Indeed, the Health and Safety inspectors wrote a lot of reports in which they related, implicitely, both the existing speeches about the professional clothing and the habits of clothing that prevailed on the working places. The aim of this article is to show what were the roles of the inspectors, taken between the industrials and the Government, in the definition and the application of the laws. The experiments taken in the foreign countries make up a fundamental inspiring influence for the application of the clothing rules by the managers and the French government. The concern is then to outline the norms – in matter of security, of well-being and of gender – which were applied to the professional clothing, through the observable deformations between the law close to norms and the reality, at a time when the state intervenes more directly in the world of working to supervise it. ; À la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle, la question vestimentaire fait l'objet d'une plus grande attention dans la constitution des règles et des normes professionnelles. Celles-ci ont été recensées dans les annales de l'inspection du travail français. En effet, dans les nombreux rapports qu'ils ont rédigés, les inspecteurs du travail ont pu rendre compte, en filigrane, à la fois des discours existants sur le vêtement professionnel et des pratiques vestimentaires qui prévalaient sur les lieux de travail.
