To eat or to vote, that is the question

Abstract

The author argues that since democracy and social justice cannot coexist in the present economic situation, Latin American governments are favouring the political consolidation of the former at the expense of the latter. She deconstructs the idea that democracy and free market will triumph in Latin America by arguing that a capitalist economy would create concentration of wealth which would consequently produce social inequities and poverty and would prevent the masses from participating fully in democracy
