Rethinking industrialization - from a national to a local perspective: A case study of the industrialization process in Tanzania with particular emphasis on the construction industry
Abstract
This study assesses the importance of small-town non-agricultural production in the development process in Tanzania, and particularly whether local agglomerations are able to supplement and/or replace large-scale industrial production. From a case study of the construction industry, the author discusses the capabilities and strategies of the various groups of enterprises; the role of the business environment in which the local construction industry operates; and the potentials for expanding the small-town-based industry in competition with larger non-local enterprises. Furthermore, he discusses the government policies which have influenced in Tanzania small-town industrialization process in general, and the development within the construction industry in particular. Finally, the study analyses how central and local government policies can encourage a local industrialization process in Tanzania in general and within the construction industry in particular.
