A genuine reform?: The June-August 1993 upheaval in Japanese politics

Abstract

A profound change took place in Japan's domestic politics during the June-August period of 1993. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) suddenly lost power, and a new anti-LDP coalition took over the task of governing Japan. The author inquires the exact meaning of this radical change in Japanes politics and whether this change is likely to be the beginning of a new political period characterized by a stable two-party democratic political system in Japan.
