Sudan's loss is Egypt's gain
In: The Middle East, Heft 168, S. 34-35
Abstract
The report depicts the increased flow of the Nile waters as a welcome change from the disappointingly low levels, but it stresses that the root of the problem for Egypt remains its population growth. As is argued, greater prosperity in Egypt has meant a sharp increase in consumer goods. New pumps, videos and air conditioners, once considered a great luxury are becoming increasingly more common place. To feed them, 50 % of Egypt's food must be imported. Much of Egypt's diplomacy and long-range planning is said to go into solving this crucial issue. Stability in Sudan is part and parcel of this rationale. (DÜI-Asd)
