Abstract

Relations between the people of Basotho and South Africans can only be understood with reference to the history of their meeting in the 1820s and their defeat by colonial forces in 1884. Despite the declaration of independence in 1965 and the end of apartheid in 1994, relations between the two groups remain ambivalent. Historical proximity resulting from significant labor migrations is still opposed to the legal denial of colonial despoilment and the refusal to allow free circulation on both sides of the border.
