Rumänien seit 1989: Die außenpolitische Dimension

In: Kilometer Null: politische Transformation und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen in Rumänien seit 1989, S. 25-37

Abstract

"After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, Romania, like other postcommunist countries in East and Southeast Europe, underwent fundamental political, economic and social changes. The priority of Romanian policy consisted since the early 1990s in becoming a member of the European Community and NATO. Especially for the USA and NATO, states like Romania, with their geopolitical role as neighbours of the politically sensitive Black Sea region, became of interest as partners for alliances in the areas of security and mutual military assistance during periods of political turmoil like the Kosovo crisis at the end of the 1990s and the Iraq war in 2003. The aim of Bucharest to become a member of the European Union led to controversial debates among the 'old' EU-ember states, but Romania finally gained membership an January 1st, 2007."
