The Alliance was created for defense against the Soviet Union & reinvented at the end of the Cold War. Today, it takes action wherever the allies' interests are threatened & no credible alternative option exists for its members' security. But the Alliance must know how to change, adapt itself to new political & economic challenges, & adjust its methods of operation as its members increase. Adapted from the source document.
US President Donald Trump has announced a "deal of the century" to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The plan is to be revealed at an undetermined date sometime after the Israeli parliamentary elections. While the details remain a well-kept secret, the US Administration's record to date suggests that the initiative will prioritise Israeli interests over Palestinian rights, ignore fundamental principles of international law, and steer well away from the idea of two sovereign states. The Palestinian leadership's rejection must therefore be expected. The incoming Israeli government is likely to treat that as a green light to implement those elements of the plan that serve to maintain its permanent control over East Jerusalem and strategic areas of the West Bank. This course also risks breakdown of the already precarious Israeli-Palestinian cooperation on conflict management. The EU and its member states should take the publication of the US plan as an occasion to spell out the principles of the kind of conflict resolution that they could support, and state the consequences for European policy of Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank. (BIOst-Rgl)
The world is at an inflection point, much like the one it faced at the end of World War II. Advancing technologies are creating new challenges and opportunities. The demographic picture of the world is changing rapidly and greatly, with truly significant consequences. And governance everywhere is in disarray. These are some of the key insights to emerge from a multiyear series of roundtables and expert contributions hosted by the Hoover Institution. In this book, George P. Shultz and James Timbie take a region-by-region "walk around the world" examining a range of issues shaping our present and future. They argue that if we are careful and deliberate, the United States is remarkably well positioned to ride this wave of change--and lead other nations in doing the same. "We can face the future with confidence, provided we take the necessary steps," the authors write. They discuss migration, reversing the decline of K-12 education, updating the social safety net, maintaining economic productivity, protecting our democratic processes, and improving national security. They argue that meeting the transformational challenges of this "hinge of history" will require international cooperation and constructive international engagement--but also that "America can help the world through this new hinge of history through leadership."

"This work offers a detailed and complete evaluation of the rogue states issue, placing US strategy in a historical context and exploring the domestic and international factors that influenced decision making in the 1990s and post-9/11 era. The rogue states doctrine entered the policy lexicon during the Clinton administration, replacing Soviet communism as the fundamental challenge to US national security and later becoming pivotal to George W. Bush's war on terror. Policymakers in the post-Cold War era focused their attention on a small group of regimes identified as posing a risk to international stability, and exhibiting a deep-rooted antipathy of the US. The targeting and labelling of the rogue states by executive and legislative officials was a uniquely American approach, which served domestic political goals and related national security priorities but failed to secure consistent support amongst international partners. The book presents a detailed analysis of the policies developed and implemented by the Clinton and Bush administrations; identifying four key stages of the US approach since the end of the Cold War. The book will build a broad picture of US relations with the individual rogue states, addressing: the factors that explain why America targeted the states in question; the extent to which the Clinton and Bush approach to rogue states connected with their wider foreign policy vision; the role of domestic political factors in the implementation of policy; and the continuity and change in US policy between 1993 and 2004. By considering the impulses and drivers behind the development of the rogue states approach, this work will extend the scope of existing work in the field and will be of interest to scholars and policymakers alike"--
Discusses military activity in the Indian & Pacific Oceans & the activities of the Canadian & Asian navies. The maritime environment of the Indo-Pacific region is reviewed, including its prominence in global trade, issues of safety & security, & greater international cooperation & governance in the waters. As more attention of Indo-Pacific nations focuses on the Indian & Pacific Oceans, the expansion of various regional navies & state navies is examined. International maritime laws & post-September 11 (2001) changes are explored in relation to adjustments to the naval presence of the region's states. Evaluated in conclusion are the development of the Canadian Navy; its relation to Asia, the US, & the Australian Navy; & recent policy changes. L. Collins
