Between the two UK referendums on European Community/European Union membership, the issue of migration came to dominate the entire debate. The period between 1975 and 2016 corresponds almost exactly to the neoliberal era in capitalism, in its British manifestation, and this is not coincidental. This article traces the shifting periods of neoliberalism ('vanguard', 'social' and 'crisis') across these 40 years, focusing in each case on how the policies associated with them specifically impacted migration into the United Kingdom. In particular, it will argue that the current migration crisis is at least partly an aspect of the wider crisis of neoliberalism as a form of capitalist organisation. It concludes that current levels of anti-migrant sentiment are a displaced expression of hostility to the social effects of neoliberalism, and which may nevertheless cause difficulties for British capital through the imposition of anti-free movement policies to which it is opposed.

Depuis plus d'une décennie, l'Afrique est devenue un sujet d'étude pour les chercheurs en sciences sociales. Cet intérêt porte sur le retard économique et social des pays africains, le déficit démocratique, la gouvernance, les fléaux naturels, les maladies et les conflits infranationaux ou régionaux. En somme, par rapport à leur analyse des continents, les chercheurs ont porté leur attention sur la persistance du sous-développement dans cette partie de la planète aussi riche en ressources naturelles et minières. Le livre de Philippe Hugon « Afriques entre puissance et vulnérabilité », publié chez Armand Colin en 2016, s'inscrit dans ce registre. Recadrant les difficultés structurelles des pays africains, l'auteur, tout en contextualisant les perspectives de leur développement, aborde les multiples aspects des sociétés et États du Continent pour situer les foyers de puissance et de vulnérabilité. Pour montrer l'importance de cet ouvrage dans le champ de la recherche scientifique concernant l'Afrique, nous essayons d'expliquer en quoi consiste son intérêt.

Abstract
Extending the work of those who center narratives in their discussions of affect, this essay considers black queer women's (BQW) narratives describing the sensations associated with being in and out of spaces created for and by BQW. The narratives examine emerged during ethnographic interviews I conducted in Washington, D.C. between 2012 and 2015. Many BQW living in and around Washington, D.C. socialize within what is colloquially referred to as the Scene – an amorphous, loosely connected set of social networks made up of other BQW and their allies. One of the most important and recognizable aspects of the Scene are the spaces produced for and by these social networks. I refer to these as "scene spaces." Scene spaces are highly-affect latent sites, as people frequently talk about how space makes them feel, or how they feel in particular spaces. Thus, scene spaces serve as the focal point of this paper's discussion.

Over the last couple of decades the phenomenon denoted as "return of religion" has become the subject of discussion in the social disciplines and humanities. Various authors stress that the social relevance of religion is becoming more obvious in the public and political spheres of the contemporary secular societies, as well as in the international relations and world politics. According to some interpretations, these phenomena allow thinking and talking about the contemporarity as a "postsecular age". The paper discusses the basic assumptions of the postsecular paradigm and points to the limitations of the very concept of "postsecularity". At the same time, the aim of the paper is to point to the importance of the relationship between religion and policy in the field of the new medical biotechnologies as one, but not exclusive aspect of anthropological research of the religious responses to the new possibilities raised by the biotechnological innovations.

This introductory essay to the HSR Special Issue "Economists, Politics, and Society" argues for a strong field-theoretical programme inspired by Pierre Bourdieu to research economic life as an integral part of different social forms. Its main aim is threefold. First, we spell out the very distinct Durkheimian legacy in Bourdieu's thinking and the way he applies it in researching economic phenomena. Without this background, much of what is actually part of how Bourdieu analysed economic aspects of social life would be overlooked or reduced to mere economic sociology. Second, we sketch the main theoretical concepts and heuristics used to analyse economic life from a field perspective. Third, we focus on practical methodological issues of field-analytical research into economic phenomena. We conclude with a short summary of the basic characteristics of this approach and discuss the main insights provided by the contributions to this special issue.

In this research note, we examine the function, merits, and challenges of using internet data sources, namely, social media discussion analysis and email interviewing, alongside data collected for the same study from traditional face-to-face interviewing. This comparison opportunity arose from recruitment challenges in our study, which investigated kindergarten teachers' perspectives and experiences with play-based teaching in kindergartens. Although we had planned to use only face-to-face interviewing, recruitment challenges prompted the use of other data to examine the same research objective, allowing us to analyze the data from each method side-by-side. We contend that social media analysis and email interviewing offer complementary benefits to approaches currently available for qualitative researchers, especially when recruitment attempts through traditional methods fail. This article focuses on practical and practice-based aspects, for qualitative researchers who are seeking alternative research methods to collect rich data about participants' perspectives and experiences.

Remembrance is a powerful instrument of social mobilisation, identity construction and political competition. Its impact on individual and shared beliefs or attitudes makes it an object of government's interest, because remembrance can be used to legitimise ideologies or policies. Theoretical considerations of a government's role as a narrator lead us to the general definition of the government's remembrance policy, which we understand as a complex of narratives and interpretations presented to influence citizens' attitudes, behaviours, beliefs and identities. The paper develops the definition with five theoretical hypotheses on the effectiveness of remembrance narratives. It argues that the government's remembrance policy is myth-motoric, non-scientific, emotional, based on commitment and that it is a type of social influence. The study is an initial verification of theoretical approach, and I believe that my arguments will motivate other researchers to investigate different aspects of a government's desire to narrate past events.

The attitudes of the European Union (EU) citizens towards immigration and the impact of their national identification on attitudes towards the EU have received ample attention in the literature. However, the immigrants' identification with Europe has not been adequately studied. This article investigates the impact of non-EU immigration heritage on European identification. Based on social identity theory and using Eurobarometer cross-sectional data, it compares the European identification of those with a first generation non-EU immigration heritage to that of EU country natives. Moreover, it focuses on salient aspects of immigrant experience such as country policies directed at reducing discrimination and personal experience of discrimination. The results show that those with non-EU immigration heritage have higher European identification compared to the natives. Furthermore, in line with social identity theory, this article shows that successful anti-discrimination policies pull immigrants towards national identification rather than European identification.

This research explores the way in which the first modernity manifests the category of individuality in one of the most important novels in Spanish: Don Quixote de la Mancha. This is achieved through four axes: the literary theory of Cervantes, the voices present in the work, the character of Ginés de Pasamonte and the idea of justice. ; La Modernidad se presenta de muchas maneras, en el aspecto social, ontológico, político, cultural, etc. Esta investigación explora la manera en la que la primera modernidad manifiesta la categoría de la individualidad en una de las novelas más importantes en español: Don Quijote de la Mancha. Esto se logra a través de cuatro ejes: la teoría literaria de Cervantes, las voces presentes en la obra, el personaje de Ginés de Pasamonte y la idea de la justicia.

This paper discusses the identity constructions of the Coptic Christian minority of Egypt during conflict and in particular through the theme of commemoration of martyrdom. In the aftermath of the attacks against them on October 9 ; 2011 ; (what is known as the "Maspero Massacre") Coptic social movements resorted to performative protests to celebrate their "martyrs". This paper analyses the visual representations of two such protests and examines how different themes and symbols from different traditions were used: Coptic Christian ; Pharaonic and as well as nationalist Egyptian traditions. This paper argues that through these performances members of the community aimed to reconstruct and reassert their identity in public space as well produce oppositional nationalist discourses that interplay with social conflicts. Through examining videos and photos of these performances ; this paper conducts an intertextual analysis of the visual aspects of the protests in order to reveal their political meaning as well as their contradictions.

Labour market policies are multi-dimensional: their design depends on factors such as generosity, coverage, the combination of active and passive elements, and overall cost. Political conflict on one dimension often hides agreement on others, and social groups possibly care about different aspects of policies. However, most empirical studies treat policy preferences as unidimensional. This article utilizes a novel experimental conjoint design to assess how five dimensions affect support for labour market policies in Spain. It also assesses if individuals' self-interest and ideology affect the importance of each dimension for support for a policy. We find that individuals' support depends mostly on the generosity of policies for the most destitute and on funding. We also find that ideology shapes which dimensions of policy citizens care most about, but economic self-interest does not. Importantly, our experimental design can be applied to study preferences for different social policies.

Rhetorical scholarship has significantly contributed to our understanding of the role of confrontation in engendering social and political change, but it traditionally over-emphasises its moral aspect, which results in the simplification of public issues and the radicalisation of identities. This article introduces a distinct form of political rhetoric and analyses the rhetorical conventions that constitute it. Drawing material from the anti-mining movement formed in the region of Halkidiki, Greece, the article proposes that disputatious rhetoric, through employing the techniques of parrēsia, melodrama and antithesis, proves pertinent to the articulation of dissent, the formation of collective subjects, and the projection of a counter-hegemonic discourse which challenges dominant neoliberal practices and discourses. Disputatious rhetoric, the article concludes, encodes the possibility of social and political change, not least because it impacts on the meaning attributed to actions and prevents the solidification of a single narrative or discourse as commonsensical.

Abstract
The study of sustainability has become an increasingly relevant topic for governments, companies, and researchers. As a result, the number of studies in this field has increased substantially, with a special focus on agribusiness. This study aims to analyze the performance of vegetable export enterprises in Mexico, taking into account the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability. To achieve this objective, a survey was designed and administered to vegetable exporters in the northwest of Mexico, and indicators were created that allowed each of the dimensions of sustainability to be evaluated. Additionally, a semi-structured interview was designed and conducted in a specific export company. The results indicate that performance is strongly oriented towards economic goals and that the social and environmental aspects of sustainability are not prioritized. In conclusion, one can claim that there is an imbalance among the three dimensions of sustainability within the companies studied, with performance primarily focusing on financial and economic indicators.

Media literacy is defined as a set of competencies that helps people critically analyze, understand and create media messages. Teaching children to become media literate emerged as a new field of education in the second half of the 20th century. While the pioneering work of Dewey, Freinet, Gerbner, Hall and Whannel as cited by Cappello et al., 2011 was infl uential in the development of media literacy, this article argues for the importance of positioning media literacy in a broader theoretical context. Th erefore, the article presents an analysis of media literacy education by relying on two of the founders of modern social thought: Rousseau and Mill. The article demonstrates how Rousseau's treatise is as timely as ever when it comes to understanding the educational aims of media literacy. Similarly, Mill's approach helps us in understanding the importance of media literacy education not only in school curricula, but also in many other aspects of social life.

Enterprise architecture (EA) has provided organizations with powerful frameworks with which to plan, manage, model and coordinate the alignment of organizational IS/ IT portfolios with organizational strategy. However, for the benefits of EA to be realized, it needs to also contribute to the process of implementing the specified systems and platforms. Whilst implementation was seen by early authors as an integral aspect of the EA process, it has since generally been ignored by authors, or investigated through an ontological lens of discreet technical architecture activities that does not account for the social context of an EA implementation (EAI). Drawing on an actual case study of an EAI in a large Australian financial services organization, I examine the importance of the EAI process to the delivery of the systems and platforms specified in the EA plans and highlight an alternative perspective that has the potential to sensitize scholars and practitioners appreciate to the social context of an EAI.
