This book is a collection of essays highlighting different disciplinary, topical, and practical approaches to the study of kink and popular culture. The volume is written by both academics and practitioners, bringing the essays a special perspective not seen in other volumes. Essays included examine everything from Nina Hartley fan letters to kink shibari witches to kink tourism in a South African prison. The focus is not just on kink as a sexual practice, but on kink as a subculture, as a way of living, and as a way of seeing popular culture in new and interesting ways. Amber R. Clifford-Napoleone is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the McClure Archives and University Museum at the University of Central Missouri, USA. She is the author of two monographs, Queerness in Heavy Metal (2015) and Queering the Inferno (2018). Her interests include identity development, music scenes and spaces, and popular culture.

This book is an ethnographic investigation of punk subculture as well as a treatise on the importance of place: a location with both physical form and cultural meaning. Rather than examining punk as a "sound" or a "style" as many previous works have done, it investigates the places that the subculture occupies and the cultural practices tied to those spaces. Since social groups need spaces of their own to practice their way of life, this work relates punk values and practices to the forms of their built environments. As not all social groups have an equal ability to secure their own spaces, the book also explores the strategies punks use to maintain space and what happens when they fail to do so. ; https://digitalcommons.newhaven.edu/sociology-books/1001/thumbnail.jpg

The article is based on an understanding of Political Culture as it is defined essentially by Almond, Verba & Powell. The existence of subcultures is stressed -- in their territorial as well as non-territorial dimension -- as well as the importance of cleavages for the development of political identities. The aspects of the lack of a comprehensive Political Culture in Europe (resp. of the European Union) are described. Focusing on Austria, the article explains the significant change of phenomena which -- for a long period -- were seen as specific qualities of Austria's Political Culture. The diminished importance of the subcultures reflects a transformation of political socialisation & the decline of traditional political loyalties. In this context, Austrian cultural policy & the role of political hegemony are discussed. References. Adapted from the source document.

In this book, Spracklen and Spracklen use the idea of collective memory to explore the controversies and boundary-making surrounding the genesis and progression of the modern gothic alternative culture. They suggest that the only way for goth culture to survive is if it becomes transgressive and radical again

Not since the 1960s have the activities of resistance among lower- and working-class youth caused such anxiety in the international community. Yet today the dispossessed are responding to the challenges of globalization and its methods of social control. The contributors to this volume examine the struggle for identity and interdependence of these youth, their clashes with law enforcement and criminal codes, their fight for social, political, and cultural capital, and their efforts to achieve recognition and empowerment. Essays adopt the vantage point of those whose struggle for social
