"Throughout her prodigious life, activist and lawyer Pauli Murray systematically fought against all arbitrary distinctions in society, channeling her outrage at the discrimination she faced to make America a more democratic country. A mixed-race orphan, Murray grew up in segregated North Carolina before escaping to New York, where she attended Hunter College and became a labor activist in the 1930s. "This will be the first book about the Civil War to examine the meaning of amputation, and of amputees, in the U.S. South. Brian Craig Miller provides medical history of the procedure, looks at men who rejected amputation, and examines how Southern men and women adjusted their ideas about honor, masculinity, and love in response to the presence of large numbers of amputees during and after the war. While some historians have explored the lives of the wounded, disabled and amputated soldiers throughout the major military conflicts of the twentieth century, few monographs have returned to a time when medical care remained primitive at best in American history: the Civil War. While one recent article explored what amputation may have meant to Union soldiers returning from battle, the same has yet to be done for the losing side in the military conflict. Bei den Wahlen zum 7. Parlament der Islamischen Republik Iran im Februar 2004 tragen die sogenannten pragmatischen Konservativen der Mitte den Sieg davon, nicht zuletzt aufgrund der massenhaften Zurückweisungen von Kandidaten der Reformbewegung durch den Wächterrat. Das Wahlergebnis wird im allgemeinen als das Ende der Reform-Ära in Iran bewertet. Vor diesem Hintergrund zeichnet die Studie ein zusammenhängendes Bild über die Wahlen und die Folgen für die iranische Politik. Dabei werden die folgenden Aspekte der inneren Dynamik Irans seit der Revolution vor 25 Jahren berücksichtigt: (1) Verlauf der Wahlen und Wahlergebnis, (2) die politische Bewegung der konservativen Mitte, (3) die innenpolitische und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung sowie die außenpolitische Entwicklung gegenüber den USA und Europa. Nach Einschätzung des Autors bedeutet das Abdrängen der führenden Reformpolitiker durch die konservativen Kräfte nicht den 'Tod' der Reformideen von Demokratisierung und Rechtsstaatlichkeit. Letztere werden völkerrechtlich zwar nicht anerkannt, haben aber in der mehrjährigen Dauer ihrer Abtrünnigkeit eigenmächtig staatliche Strukturen geschaffen, Dieser neue, über die unmittelbaren Anrainer des Kaspi-Sees weit hinausgreifende Raumbegriff wurde vor allem aufgrund der Exploration von Erdöl- und Ergasfeldern sowie internationalen Auseinandersetzungen über die Exportkanäle dieser strategischen Rohstoffe prominent. Für Rußland bedeutet 'Südpolitik' die Bewältigung seines strategischen Machtverlusts an dieser ehemaligen Reichsperipherie und das Verhalten gegenüber internationalen Akteuren in diesem Raum. Von dieser Perspektive aus gestaltet sich auch seine Politik gegenüber einem weiteren Süden und Osten (Türkei, Iran, China, Partner ehemaliger sowjetischer Drittweltpolitik im Mittleren Osten). Die in den letzten Jahren gewachsene Konkurrenz mit den USA im Kaspischen Raum hat Rußlands Forderung nach einer multipolaren Weltordnung bekräftigt, die gemeinsam mit Staaten wie Iran und China vorgetragen wird. Die 'kaspische Politik' der USA negiert die Abhängigkeit dieses Raums von einer regionalen Hegemonialmacht, fordert im Grunde genommen eben jene 'Multipolarität' für die internationalen Beziehungen in der Region. The authors of this book challenge the view that was current among many people in the Netherlands during the period 1945-1949 that the American government and its foreign policymakers unequivocally backed the Indonesian Republic's struggle for independence. The same myth of America's political endorsement of Indonesians' quest for independence continues to reverberate in the United States itself. In fact, ex-President Clinton repeated the story as recently as 1995 when he wrote to ex-President Suharto that in the post-World War II era, President Truman and the U.S. Congress had actively supported Indonesia 'as the nation was being born'. On the basis of research in American, Indonesian, Dutch, and Australian diplomatic records and in the archives of the United Nations, Gouda and Brocades Zaalberg describe and analyze American visions of the Dutch East Indies/Indonesia from the 1920s to December 1949, when the Kingdom of the Netherlands relinquished its sovereignty over the archipelago in southeast Asia to the United States fo Indonesia. Their historical analysis suggests that the American diplomatic establishment was not as ignorant of conditions in the Indonesian archipelago as many Dutch people assumed, both before and after World War II. They also chronicle the unfolding of America's steady but tactic backing of its faithful Dutch ally in northern Europe until early 1949, when U.S. assessments of the regions in the world where the Cold War might ignite into a 'Hot War' began to incorporate the anti-colonial, nationalist struggles in Indonesia and Vietnam.
