The paper presents the findings of two studies on the current transformations of philosophy of history. The paper claims that those transformations outline a research field more appropriately defined as historical knowledge studies, and focused on the conditions of possibility, operation, structure, institutional praxis, critical potential and political relevance of our knowledge about history. The study provides an outline of the emergence of new problems and topics in philosophy of history based on an analysis of the contents of a prominent journal crucial to the development of the field, History and Theory, which has hosted many important debates on historical knowledge since the 1960s and whose editorial policy is recognised for its pluralism. This account of the transformation of the research field is supplemented by the findings of a study of the institutional localisation and geographic distribution of university courses in philosophy of history.

Martyn P. Thompson is Associate Professor and Senior Political Theorist in the Department of Political Science. His main fields of interest are the history of political thought since the Renaissance, literature and politics, and contemporary German political philosophy. Professor Thompson has two doctorates, the first from the London School of Economics, the second (the Habilitation) from Tuebingen University. He has been a faculty member in the universities of London, Cambridge and Tuebingen. His honors include a Fellow Commonership at Churchill College, Cambridge University; Fellowships at the Huntington Library and the William Andrews Clark Library in California; and honorary life membership of the R.G. Collingwood Society. Professor Thompson founded the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Erforschung des politischen Denkens in 1989. He was President of the International Conference for the Study of Political Thought from 1995 to 2002 and he was President of the Michael Oakeshott Association from 2008 to 2010. Prof. Dr. Barbara Zehnpfennig lehrt als Professorin für Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte an der Universität Passau. Ihre Schwerpunktthemen sind antike Philosophie, amerikanisches Verfassungsdenken und Totalitarismus, letzterer speziell im Hinblick auf die Erforschung seiner ideologischen Grundlagen. Seit 2004 ist sie Vorsitzende der Deutschen Gesellschaft zur Erforschung des Politischen Denkens (DGEPD), seit 2006 Mitherausgeberin des »Jahrbuchs Politisches Denken«.

El análisis se refleja en cuatro ámbitos principales: lo filosófico, lo cultural, lo económico y lo pedagógico. This book contains a thorough and balanced series of dialogues introducing key topics in philosophy of religion, such as: the existence and nature of God, the problem of evil, religious pluralism, the nature of religious experience, immortality, and the meaning of life. A realistic cast of characters in a natural setting engages in a series of thought-provoking conversations; the dialogue format of these conversations captures typical student attitudes and questions concerning religious belief; allows comparison of important themes throughout the dialogues; encourages the interjection of insights, observations, questions, and objections; and introduces related points when they would naturally arise, instead of relegating them to a later chapter. As well as presenting a detailed and probing discussion, each dialogue includes a list of key terms, a set of study questions, and a bibliography - all of which make this an excellent text for courses in philosophy of religion and introductory philosophy classes.

The paper surveys Hegel's early aphorisms from his Wastebook first published by K. Rosenkranz. In his Hegel biography, Rosenkranz admires these critical xenias for their beauty and their poignance. They are chance but concise little products that are to reappear in Hegel's introduction to The Phenomenology of the Spirit. They show the process through which Hegel sheds the mythical perspective he inherited from Schelling's philosophy. György Lukács also considers these notes important as traces of Hegel's maturing thought and methodological development in Jena during his early years. There are approximately one hundred notes which can be arranged into five topics: religion, philosophy as science, methodological problems of the principle of dialectics, the intellectual and political status of Germany. These ideas will be expanded on in Hegel's early volumes, primarily in The Phenomenology of the Spirit.

Identitätsbehauptungen setzen zentrifugale Kräfte frei, die die offenen Gesellschaften westlicher Prägung zunehmend religiös oder populistisch herausfordern. Gefahr droht weniger von außen, etwa über asymmetrische Kriegführung, als von innen. Die verschiedenen Identitäten zu vermitteln erfordert Toleranz, deren Grenzen philosophisch zu ermitteln sich als schwierig, wenn nicht gar als unmöglich erweist. Dabei gerät in Vergessenheit, dass Liberalismus und republikanisches Denken auch theologisch begründet wurden, mehr noch: Im Unterschied zu Humanismus und Aufklärung, die alle guten Verfassungsformen im Rahmen des aristotelischen Denkens anerkannten, gilt für die reformierte Theologie ausschließlich die Republik als legitim. Ihre Logik hat die Vorstellung von Identität verabschiedet und ein Denken entwickelt, das der Toleranz gegenüber Identitätsbehauptungen, erst recht, wenn sie religiös begründet werden, in durchaus liberaler Absicht Grenzen zu setzen vermag. »Protestantism and Neutralisation« Humanism urge for more tolerance towards peregrine identities. Defining boundaries has ever been a problem. But the republican idea of thought has its roots in theology. In contrast with humanism, which embraced all correct Aristotelian constitutions, reformed Protestant theology only considers the republic as legitimate. Owing to its logic, a concept of identity has developed that puts limits to all claims of identity, especially when religion is being intermingled within. Immanuel Kant gehört zu den bedeutendsten Denkern der Politik in der Philosophiegeschichte. In keiner Geschichte der politischen Philosophie fehlt der Weltbürger aus Königsberg. Trotzdem ist die genaue Bedeutung der »Politik« bei ihm bisher wenig untersucht worden. Angesichts dieser Forschungslücke geht die Arbeit der Frage nach: Was macht das Wesen der Kantischen Politik beziehungsweise das Politische bei Kant aus? Das Politische bei ihm wird sich als Attribut derjenigen kooperativen Handlung zeigen, durch welche der Mensch erst zum Menschen wird. Gleichzeitig zeigt die Analyse, dass Kants Aufruf zur Aufklärung als ein Aufruf zur Menschwerdung durch gerechte Politik gilt, der auf seinem Streben beruht, der Stimme der Vernunft Ausdruck zu verleihen. »Kant´s Voice. A Study on the Political in Immanuel Kant« Immanuel Kant is one of the most important political thinkers in the history of philosophy. There is no history of political philosophy which does not feature this cosmopolitan from Königsberg. Nevertheless, his exact understanding of »politics« has been little studied so far. In view of this gap in the research, this work examines the question: What is the essence of Kant's politics or of the political in Kant? The political for Kant will manifest as an attribute of the cooperative action through which human becomes human. At the same time, the analysis shows that Kant's call to enlightenment is seen as a call to becoming human through just politics, which is based on his quest to express the voice of reason. In Disability through the Lens of Justice, Jessica Begon considers how disabled individuals should be justly treated in the public policy of liberal democratic states. She seeks to create an account of disability which takes seriously the diversity of disabled lives, an approach that enables individuals to exercise broadly-specified opportunities

There are many actions that we attribute, at least colloquially, to states. Given their size and influence, states are able to inflict harm far beyond the reach of a single individual. But there is a great deal of unclarity about exactly who is implicated in that kind of harm, and how we should think about responsibility for it. It is a commonplace assumption that democratic publics both authorize and have control over what their states do; that their states act in their name and on their behalf. In Not In Their Name, Holly Lawford-Smith approaches these questions from the perspective of social ontology, asking whether the state is a collective agent, and whether ordinary citizens are members of that agent. If it is, and they are, there's a clear case for democratic collective culpability. She explores alternative conceptions of the state and of membership in the state; alternative conceptions of collective agency applied to the state; the normative implications of membership in the state; and both culpability (from the inside) and responsibility (from the outside) for what the state does. Ultimately, Lawford-Smith argues for the exculpation of ordinary citizens and the inculpation of those working in public services

He engages with contemporary concerns about wealth inequality, class hierarchy, and taxation, while also drawing on the history of the egalitarian, utilitarian, and liberal traditions in political philosophy. He presents an egalitarian case for restricting inherited wealth, arguing that unrestricted inheritance is unjust to the extent that it enables and enhances the intergenerational replication of inequality. Here, inequality is understood in a group-based sense: the unjust effects of inheritance are principally in its tendency to concentrate certain opportunities into certain groups. This results in what Halliday describes as 'economic segregation'. He defends a specific proposal about how to tax inherited wealth: roughly, inheritance should be taxed more heavily when it comes from old money

Aristotle examines the role of leisure (scholé) in the optimal life of the citizen (Politics VII/VIII). In the quest for the most desirable life- understood as the proper combination of political and contemplative elements- Aristotle ascribes an important role to leisure.
