'The Battle of the Classics' criticizes contemporary apologetics for the humanities and presents a historically informed case for a decidedly different approach to rescuing the humanistic disciplines in American higher education. It uses the so-called Battle of the Classics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a springboard for crafting a novel foundation for the humanistic tradition. The text argues that current defences of the humanities rely on the humanistic disciplines as inculcators of certain poorly defined skills such as 'critical thinking.'

Der österreichische Coach und Autor Adler beschäftigt sich seit 20 Jahren mit dem Thema Sozialkompetenz und wird als führender Experte auf diesem Gebiet angesehen. In den letzten beiden Kapiteln bietet Adler dann anhand von Grundregeln Lösungen zur Veränderung an, die er die "Goldenen Zwölf" nennt. Hier vermittelt er informativ, praxisorientiert und motivierend entscheidende Richtlinien für den optimalen Umgang miteinander. Dementsprechend ist für Adler Sozialkompetenz erlernbar, entwickel- und trainierbar und bei jedem Menschen optimierbar. Empfehlenswerte Ergänzung zu B. Langmaack (BA 12/04) und H. Kellner (BA 8/06). Criticizes the decision of Duke University's president to allow the annual conference of the Palestine Solidarity Movement (PSM), a group endorsing anti-Semitism and the use of violence to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict in favor of the Palestinians, to take place on campus, and argues that the president's standard defense of his decision, that of dialogue in the name of free speech and education, is misguided and disingenuous. The university is also blamed for promoting an atmosphere in which anti-Semitic rhetoric was fostered both during the conference and in its aftermath. Portions of the conference are described and analyzed, as are related discussions appearing in campus media.
