Following the Tiananmen Incident, the collapse of the communist regimes in Eastern Europe and the disintegration of the USSR made the Chinese communists worry at their future. The author discusses Deng Xiaoping's support for more economic reforms and the power struggle within the Chinese communist Party between supporters and opponents of Deng's reform policies. (DÜI-Sen)

Renewed discussion by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of the possibility of communist states "peacefully evolving" toward capitalism is a direct result of a number of events that occurred in the communist world in the past half year. In September 1989, the general secretary of the CCP, Chiang Tse-Min, brought up the subject of "peaceful evolution" toward the end of a long speech marking the fortieth anniversary of the Chinese communist regime. The author looks at "peaceful evolution" as an ideological problem of the Chinese communists since 1958. Three phases of rise and fall of Marxism since 1848 are briefly discussed. (DÜI-Sen)

The study points out why the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) is both anti-leftist and anti-rightist. The Chinese communists are submerged in a sea of contradictions. The author believes that the demands for ideological and political liberalization which are the inevitable result of economic liberalization are something that the CCP, with its monopoly over these spheres, cannot permit. The author takes a brief look at the theory of the initial stage of socialism discussed at the Thirteenth National Congress of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party). Two different attitudes towards Marxism within the CCP. It is argued that the theory of the initial stage of socialism has been formulated by the Chinese communists to serve their purpose of chieving economic reform. (DÜi-Sen)

The paper sketches out the reactions of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) to the student demonstrations in the PRC for freedom, democracy and human rights. The CCP has emphasized the importance of upholding the "four cardinal principles" (upholding the socialist road, the dictatorship of the proletariat, the leadership of the CCP and Marxism-Leninism and Mao Tse-tung thought). The author analyses and assesses the special characteristics of these principles and concludes that upholding of these principles really means the upholding of the dictatorship of the CCP. (DÜI-Sen)

A CCP (Chinese Communist Party) National Conference was held between 18th and 23th September 1985. One of the two items on the agenda was to effect the replacement of aging cadres in the leading CCP organizations by younger members. This item was a major step in Deng Xiaoping's plan to find a successor for himself as paramount leader. The article focusses on the processes Deng utilized, after his return to power, to formulate and advance his plan for succession. The personnel selections for leading Party organizations made at the conference are analyzed. (DÜI-Sen)

The evolution of the Chinese Communist Party's ideology since 1949 can be divided into two major stages, with Mao's death in September 1976 as the dividing line. Before his death, his 'thought' was upheld as Marxist orthodoxy in China, which repudiated all kinds of 'Rightist' ideologies that were later 'revisionist'. It was under the pretext of 'opposing and preventing revisionism' that Mao launched the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) to purge his political opponents within the Chinese Communist Party hierarchy. Since Mao's death, the 'ideological question' withhin the hierarchy has become more diversified and complicated. Ideological dilemmas faced by it in the post-Mao period are discussed. (DÜI-Sen)
