Founded in 1806, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, Kentucky, was a thriving community for much of the nineteenth century. Eventually, a steadily shrinking membership saw the gradual decline of this remarkable village, and the last remaining Shaker to reside at Pleasant Hill died in 1923. In 1961 local citizens formed a private not-for-profit organization to preserve and restore the village and interpret the rich heritage of the Pleasant Hill Shakers. The use of self-assessment instruments to determine students'entrepreneurial characteristics represents a well-accepted practice in entrepreneurship courses, and many professors are only now beginning to embrace Web-based instruments. We describe how we use a comprehensive array of online self-assessments in an undergraduate New Venture Creation course required of Xavier University entrepreneurship majors. We illustrate how we designed in-class and out-of-class assignments around these self-assessments using Bandura's social learning theory. Our approach can be adapted to other types of management courses by modifying the set of self-assessments and the design of assignments to the particular course objectives.

Project Validation of the Intervener Program (VIP) studied and documented the effectiveness of the Intervener Service Model which provides the services of a paraprofessional (called an intervener) to families of young children who are deaf-blind. The intervener provides auditory, visual, and tactile stimulation for the child and helps the child develop interactive behaviors instead of isolated, defensive, or self-stimulatory behaviors. The intervener also enables the parents to obtain much needed respite. Project VIP obtained abundant quantitative and qualitative data on the effectiveness of the Intervener Service Model. The data strongly support the need for Intervener Services for young children who are deaf-blind and their families.

Although the importance of incorporating interpersonal skills courses into the management curriculum has been well documented, the use of electronic learning resources in behavioral science courses is in its infancy. This article describes the introduction of and student response toWeb-enhanced instruction in an Interpersonal Skills course required of Xavier UniversityMBA students. It provides a guide to specific Web self-assessment instruments, suggests assignments that integrate online tools with other course pedagogies, includes examples of Web-driven in-class interactive activities and out-of-class reflective activities, presents a model of key implementation and pedagogical factors, and discusses implications to consider in using online assessments.

This study focused on the hearing-screening procedures used to identify children who have hearing losses who were later enrolled in SKI*HI parent/infant programs throughout the country. Responses to a questionnaire for 1,404 children indicated that although auditory brainstem response (ABR) technology provided the lowest mean identification age, informal hearing-screening procedures (parental suspicion and referral) were the procedure of identification for 80% of the children. The data suggest that formal screening programs are not presently locating the vast majority of infants who have hearing losses. Recommendations for professional and parental education in the area of hearing-loss screening are provided.

Serogroup C meningococcal (MenC) disease accounts for one-third of all meningococcal cases and causes meningococcal outbreaks in the U.S. Quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine conjugated to diphtheria toxoid (MenACYWD) was recommended in 2005 for adolescents and high risk groups such as military recruits. We evaluated anti-MenC antibody persistence in U.S. military personnel vaccinated with either MenACYWD or meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (MPSV4). Twelve hundred subjects vaccinated with MenACYWD from 2006 to 2008 or MPSV4 from 2002 to 2004 were randomly selected from the Defense Medical Surveillance System. Baseline serologic responses to MenC were assessed in all subjects; 100 subjects per vaccine group were tested during one of the following six post-vaccination time-points: 5–7, 11–13, 17–19, 23–25, 29–31, or 35–37 months. Anti-MenC geometric mean titers (GMT) were measured by rabbit complement serum bactericidal assay (rSBA) and geometric mean concentrations (GMC) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Continuous variables were compared using the Wilcoxon rank sum test and the proportion of subjects with an rSBA titer ≥8 by chi-square. Pre-vaccination rSBA GMT was <8 for the MenACWYD group. rSBA GMT increased to 703 at 5–7 months post-vaccination and decreased by 94% to 43 at 3 years post-vaccination. GMT was significantly lower in the MenACWYD group at 5–7 months post-vaccination compared to the MPSV4 group. The percentage of MenACWYD recipients achieving an rSBA titer of ≥8 decreased from 87% at 5–7 months to 54% at 3 years. There were no significant differences between vaccine groups in the proportion of subjects with a titer of ≥8 at any time-point. GMC for the MenACWYD group was 0.14 µg/mL at baseline, 1.07 µg/mL at 5–7 months, and 0.66 µg/mL at 3 years, and significantly lower than the MPSV4 group at all time-points. Anti-MenC responses wane following vaccination with MenACYWD; a booster dose is needed to maintain protective levels of circulating antibody.
