(DIPF/Orig.) ; The author tells of her school days up to the final examination, which she passed in 1915 at a Thuringian secondary school for girls as one of the first women to do so. The account of her experiences as a student in Berlin, Munich, and Heidelberg (she took up law and political economy) illustrates the special opportunities for female students at German Universities during the First World War. Social services during and domestic duties after the war delayed the doctorate, which she obtained in Jena in 1925 and which then opened up a great number of opportunities to work with charitable associations and in the educational field up to the Third Reich and after 1945.

The 1998 claim of New York Times correspondent Larry Rohter that "key details" of Nobel Prize winning, Guatemalan Indian Rigoberta Menchu's story were untrue led to a growing controversy within North American academic society regarding subaltern studies that continues today & has spread to Europe. Third World research, once primarily in the hands of North American & European social scientists, has evolved into "subaltern studies" with input from those directly affected, leading to a discrepancy in views as illustrated in Menchu's case. Menchu's 1983 "autobiographical" book, edited & aided in publication by Elizabeth Burgos, a self-titled "professional revolutionary", detailed Menchu & her family's suffering under Guatemala repressive regimes, guerilla war, & genocide. The book won international acclaim & stimulated scientific research that revealed several inconsistencies in her story, entering also the ongoing North American "culture wars". Open questions & lingual or cultural differences in "testimonial" literature not withstanding, the suffering of indigenous people in Guatemala is undisputed, & the tenor of Menchu's book remains true. If the inclusion of such subaltern literature stimulates scientific dialogue & overcomes metropolitan academic arrogance, then everyone wins. L. Kehl
The article analyzes clemency pleas of political prisoners of the leftist resistance movement against National Socialism. The questions of the documentary significance and the autobiographical dimensions of clemency pleas stand in the forefront. This focus is prompted by the recent expansion in thc definition of ego documents, in which the relationship between »voluntary« and »involuntary« autobiographical texts is increasingly considered. Written in compulsory and violent contexts, these texts, however, also revcal the authors' attempts to create - even if minimal and, at times, ambiguous - spheres of agency. In clemency pleas and statements pledging societal integration, efforts of imprisoned men and women to convincingly distance themselves from their previous lives become recognizable, as weil as attempts to create the most credible autobiographical 'authenticity'. The practice of clemency, which was bound to institutional regulations, illuminates the dynamic processes of authorities regarding perceptions of who was considered to be »worthy« of clemency, as weil as the possibilities of receiving clemency. Furthermore, an analysis of clemency practices sheds light upon the question of »völkisch « integration, which was played out in the arena of tension that existed between practices of power, legal norms, and the stratcgies of prisoners. ; The article analyzes clemency pleas of political prisoners of the leftist resistance movement against National Socialism. ; The following literature dissertation shows a way of healing from traumata through writing, which the still living writer Christa Reinig has put down. The dissertation starts with the youth works that show the psychic violations by the war and the resulting subject, death. Later Reinig became a Buddhist, in the middle of her literary period, caused by an accident and started autobiographical writing. In the seventies she became part of the feminist movement and works out, in novel and essay, a radical feministic position, which led to a lesbian coming-out. In the end she wrote a matriarchical novel with autobiographical imbeddings. During this development Reinig has been overcomig her double-ego and the masculine parts of it. A relevant chapter of this dissertation is dedicated to this theme. The following text explores the complete works of Reinig, but leaves out some of the surrealistic radio plays who are less or not relevant for the subject and of which some are not yet published. The list of literature used contains additionally Reinigs single publications in addition to anthologies and critique in the press, all together several dozens of pages.

The rereading of autobiographical texts of artisans shows, that the 'Wanderschaft', the journeying from place to place - which at first sight appears to be clearly determined by traditions, to be normatively and institutionally defined and protected - is in fact open to various interpretations and ambitions. 'Wanderschaft' does not simply appear as a phase of training and socialisation, but provides some scope for ambitions of distinction and rise in the world, which far surpass the bounds of a particular trade. The article attempts to develop a tendencially desubstantialising perspective in respect to what - beyond collective representations - single craftsmen contribute to the making of a trade. The article thus questions the time honoured perception of the Central-European artisan of early modern times, a perception characterised by collectivism, petrification and particularism and based on historical sources generated by seigneural and governmental administrations. ; The rereading of autobiographical texts of artisans shows, that the 'Wanderschaft', the journeying from place to place - which at first sight appears to be clearly determined by traditions, to be normatively and institutionally defined and protected - is in fact open to various interpretations and ambitions.
