Der Beitrag ist eine Einführung zu einem Sammelband über qualitativ-empirische Sozialforschung. Er charakterisiert zunächst die qualitativ-empirische Sozialforschung, gibt dann einen Überblick über die Entwicklung und zeigt detailliert Hauptströmungen und Typen qualitativer Sozialforschung auf. Dabei werden verschiedene Einteilungskriterien europäischer und amerikanischer Autoren berücksichtigt und dargestellt. Es wird das Verhältnis von qualitativer und quantitativer Sozialforschung im Hinblick auf ihre Leistungsfähigkeit sowie hinsichtlich der Fruchtbarkeit einer möglichen Verbindung der beiden Richtungen erörtert. Abschließend werden die Auswahlkriterien für die Beiträge in diesem Band vorgestellt. (pag)

In Europe RE in schools is predominantly organised denominationally. Growing religious plurality in particular is increasingly presenting a challenge for this organisational model. The question of how RE should be organised is currently the subject of controversial debate within the field of religious education studies. Is an alternative format even thinkable for those who hold responsibility for RE in schools? This study dedicates itself to Vienna, which like other European cities, is characterised by a high degree of religious plurality. The study employs a qualitative-empirical approach, in order to take a close look at the discourse around RE within two schools for upper secondary education, where it is coming up against its organisational limits. This study analyses group discussions with RE teachers and with members of the school community committee (an elected body consisting of teacher, pupil and parent representatives, as well as the head of school). Research into these often implicit attitudes towards religion and RE is vital for the development of future oriented forms of RE. This study consequently offers a valuable contribution to context sensitive religious education studies.

Der Beitrag diskutiert die Möglichkeiten von "cui" (computerunterstützte Inhaltsanalyse) als ein Verfahren zur systematischen Reduktion von Textbedeutungen. "Cui" bedient sich vielfältiger, insbesondere quantitativ-statistischer Verfahren, nachdem man bestimmte Wörterkategorien ausgezählt hat. Für qualitative Forschungsansätze bietet die "cui" neben der Möglichkeit, Hypothesen systematisch zu prüfen, Verfahren für die Textexploration an. Diese Explorationsverfahren mittels Kategorienschemata werden für die Suche relevanter Textstellen oder für die Übersicht über das Vokabular von Sprechern verwendet. Damit kann die "cui" auch zur Verknüpfung qualitativer und quantitativer Forschungsansätze beitragen.

"Der Artikel referiert eine qualitative Studie zur Rezeption dänischer Fernsehnachrichten. Es wurden linguistische Diskursanalysen von Nachrichtensendungen sowie Mitschriften von Tiefeninterviews zu jeder einzelnen Nachrichteneinheit durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse legen nahe, daß Fernseher Nachrichten mittels Referenz auf einige wenige, höchst allgemeine 'Superthemen' rekonstruieren. Diese 'Superthemen' weisen auf die Bedeutung gesellschaftlich begründeter Strategien zum Verständnis von Nachrichten, die interpretative Gemeinschaften miteinander teilen. Zum Schluß der Arbeit werden die allgemeinen Implikationen von 'Superthemen' und Interpretationsgemeinschaften für die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit Rezeption und dem gesellschaftlichen Nutzen von Massenkommunikation dargelegt." This article reports a qualitative study of the reception of Danish television news. A linguistic discourse analysis was made of a news programme and of the transcripts of in-depth interviews concerning each news story. The findings suggest that viewers may reconstruct the news through reference to a small number of highly generalized `super-themes'. The super-themes point to the influence of socially derived strategies for understanding news that are common to interpretive communities. The wider implications of super-themes and interpretive communities for research into the reception and social uses of mass communication are considered in the final part of the article.

This paper demonstrates the potential of a qualitative empirical research method [Ganzheitliche Bewältigung von Komplexität (GABEK®)] for systemic sustainability research. We interpret systemic corporate sustainability as a research programme that views the company and its environment as an ongoing process of social construction. Furthermore, we argue that the mental models of relevant actors are crucial within the process of social construction. We then present GABEK® as a unique method for qualitative empirical content analysis and highlight that GABEK® can contribute substantially to systemic sustainability research because it holds the potential to unearth and analyze the mental models of diverse actors with the scrutiny of empirical research. We illustrate this potential with a case study of a major German company's sustainability management (BASF AG), and we outline avenues for future research for an empirically oriented approach to systemic sustainability research. OBJECTIVES: 'Social justice' and 'health equity' are core values in public health. Yet, despite their normative character, the numerous normative accounts of social justice and equity are rarely acknowledged, meaning that these values are often unaccompanied by an explanation of what they require in practice. The objective of this study was to bridge this normative scholarship with information about how these 'core values' are integrated and interpreted by Canadian public health policy-makers. METHODS: Twenty qualitative interviews with public health policy-makers recruited from public health organizations in Canada, analyzed using an 'empirical ethics' methodology that combined empirical data with normative ethical analysis involving theories of justice. FINDINGS: Participants viewed health equity and social justice as distinct, where the former was perceived as 'clearer'. Health equity was conceptualized as focusing attention to 'proximal' disparities in access to services and 'materialistic' determinants of health, whereas social justice was conceptualized as focusing on structural issues that lead to disadvantage. Health equity was characterized as 'neutral' and 'comfortable', whereas social justice was characterized as 'political' and 'uncomfortable'. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that health equity dominates the discursive space wherein justice-based considerations are brought to bear on public health activities. As a result, 'uncomfortable' justice-based considerations of power imbalances and systematic disadvantage can be eschewed in practice in favour of attending to 'proximal' inequities. These findings reveal the problematic ways in which considerations of justice and equity are, and are not, being taken up in public health policy, which in turn may have negative implications for the public's health.

Agentensimulationen stellen einen innovativen methodischen
Ansatz dar, weil sie auf der Ebene des Individuums ansetzen.
Als Modellierungstool streben sie keine formale Abbildung einer
"Wirklichkeit" an, sondern verlegen sich auf die individuellen
Repräsentationen von sozialer Situationen. Auf empirischer
Seite öffnen Agentensimulationen sich damit qualitativen Zugängen. Der Beitrag will genau diese Anschlussfähigkeiten aufzeigen. Erläutert wird, wie in zwei Untersuchungsregionen in
Deutschland und Schweden die Zusammenarbeit von Akteuren
in einem kommunikativen Planungsprozess aus dem LEADER-
Programm der Europäischen Union zur Entwicklung ländlicher
Räume auf qualitativem Weg analysiert und anschließend
durch den Einsatz von Agentensimulationen mittels Szenarienbildung Vergleichsdaten geschaffen wurden, die eine Evaluation
der genannten Prozesse erlauben.

The article starts with a brief sketch of the current state of care ethics in the Dutch-speaking Low Countries. It examines more closely the authors' approach to empirical research and its underlying argument, and sketches a theoretical development in care ethics that they deem promising. An oscillating movement is needed between empirical work and theory development, committing both to each other. The article concludes with some remarks on the need in care ethics for multisided international debates, the empirical grounding of normative claims and the radicalisation of care ethics, loyal to its critical insights and dedicated to its transformational aim.
