; The dissertation examines the professional biography of Bauhaus student, architect and designer Herbert Hirche in the context of the ideas, the institutions and the network of the Deutscher Werkbund. The conditions under which Hirche developed professionally are explored here for the first time. Using Hirche as a concrete example, the specifics of the situation after the lost war are examined: The Werkbund's attempts to capitalise on the international successes and the politically unencumbered traditions of the 1920s, largely negating the programmatic, aesthetic and biographical continuities that had existed during the Nazi era, and reviving the utopian potential of modernity(ies) in the spirit of optimism in the Germany of reconstruction and "Wirtschaftswunder". As a furniture and product designer, exhibition designer and propagandist of good form, design functionary and university lecturer, Hirche had a decisive influence on the development of the objective, morally connoted design "Made in (West) Germany", through which the young Federal Republic of Germany gave a new - modern - face to its forced socio-political change after 1945
Beginning with the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019, new perspectives are being revealed on GDR design. This promises a revision of the German design historiography of the last decades, which was dominated by West-German perspectives. Referring to this trend in research, my essay questions the German history and historiography of design. After the Second World War, the German historiography of art followed the paradigm of the Cold War (Abstraction in the West, Socialist Realism in the East). The historiography of design followed this schema by distinguishing "socialist" from "capitalist" design. To this day, this prevents "transnational" perspectives. In contrast to this, I agree with the argument that the consolidation of the two German states occurred with reference to the (old) concept of "good form", among other things. Even though the different discourses refer to similar objects and references, they are structured by different interpretations of the term "Good Form", referring to the ruling ideology of the particular state. It represents a central argument in aesthetic education (Geschmackserziehung), which contained moral and political values. In 1950s West Germany, the Deutscher Werkbund, an organization which was involved in processes of institutionalization in both the political and design historical field, was the main driver of this discourse. In contrast to this, the institutionalization of design in the GDR was organized by the state. Nevertheless, distinctive parallels in the discourses in East and West suggest the lasting impact of the Werkbund. Consequently, I argue that the discursive foundations, which were laid in the 1950s at the latest, had a lasting influence on "German-German" (deutsch-deutsch) design historiography and have recently opened up a pan-German (gesamtdeutsch) perspective. ; Beginning with the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019, new perspectives are being revealed on GDR design. The article presents a comparative analysis of some key objects of German and Kyiv architecture of the early twentieth century to determine the corresponding trends. Parallels and identities are shown and noted. An analysis of the background and context is given, as well as the author's conclusions of the respective styles. In particular, German Werkbund, international Art Nouveau, Ukrainian architectural Art Nouveau, "New Objectivity", Bauhaus, functionalism, constructivism, post-constructivism, German and Soviet neoclassicism are mentioned. Were analyzed in detail: TheFagus Factory (1910-1911) by Walter GropiusandAdolf Meyer, Centennial Hall (1911-1913) by the Max Berg, the Kyiv district power plant (named after Stalin), (1926–1930) by Mikhailo Parusnikov with the participation of George Goltz and Andrey Burov, Rolit (1932) by Vasul. Krychesky, Ehrentempel (1933–1936) and TheHaus der Kunst in Munich (1933 - 1937) by Paul Ludwig Troost, competitive proposals for the construction of the Government Quarter in Kyiv (1934 - 1935) and the hotel within the Government Quarter (1939). Mentioned Esposizione Universale Roma (EUR) by Marcello Piacentini, projects by Albert Speer and others. The article summarizes a series of author's researches devoted to a detailed analysis of international context and parallels of Kyiv architecture which is represented in the background of the consistent artistic transitions (from eclecticism and historical reminiscences to modernism, from Art Nouveau to avant-garde, from constructivism to Soviet neoclassicism and, finally, from Stalinist empire to modernism).

Schmitz, Bruno Georg, dt.

There are three main aspects the Kunst-Dienst (KD), which was founded in Dresden in February 1928, tried to teach until the thirties of the twentieth century: the religious-humanistic understanding of the world; a religious universal aim according to Paul Tillich´s Theory of cultural theologie (Kulturtheologie); the belief in a reform movement run by the Church in accordance with the progress in mastering nature and technology in the world of life, work and art; modern aesthetic approaches of Expressionism, New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) and Deutscher Werkbund, aiming at reforming culture. So the KD with its art-teaching work could partly act as a supporter of an avant-garde. It tried to achieve qualifying and updating of the religious- clerical relation to modern arts and fought for modern architecture and industrial design. As an institution that had been personally, organizationally, economically and politically integrated into the Nazi Regime since 1933, the KD was not only used as an element for the establishment of an apparently attractive variety in the production, distribution and reception of art. Also in its art-teaching work, it can be seen as an example of "different", "right-wing" avant-garde, "useful", "conservative" or even "reactionary" modern art.
The objectives are to analyze the development of the relations in the sphere of the culture between Switzerland and Germany in the 1930-40's and to determine the reasons for termination of the cultural dialogue between the countries after the arrival of national socialists in German and conditions of its recovery after the Second World War. The historical-genetic and comparative methods were chosen for the study. With the use of the historical-genetic method, the evolution of the GermanSwiss cultural relations in the first half of the XX c. was explored. Appeal to the comparative method has enabled to draw the conclusions about the features of the bilateral cultural relations between Switzerland and Germany in the period between the two world wars, during the war of 1939 – 1945 and post-war years. Scientific novelty of the proposed article is that for the first time in Ukrainian historiography an attempt to explore the development of the cultural relations between Switzerland and Germany in 1930 – 40's was made. Conclusions. The main reasons of the Swiss efforts to withdraw from the involvement in the German cultural world in the late 1930's – 40's were memories of the First World War, when the conflict between the French and German communities had put in jeopardy the peace within the Swiss society, and a desire not to create the pretext for the global public accusations against Switzerland of its involvement in the crimes of the national socialists, which could raise doubts about the issue of Swiss neutrality. The background for the restoration of the cultural dialogue between the countries was the desire of Swiss to support the formation of a new democratic regime in the neighboring country, which was realized through the activities of both individual private artistic associations and institutions, and the work of the Swiss diplomacy, which through the analysis of the cultural situation of the particular German states was searching for the potential areas and ways of cooperation. ; This dissertation offers a history of modern commercial advertising during the first half of the twentieth century and demonstrates that despite cultural barriers, advertising colonized the everyday world of Germans and began to encroach upon "German culture". The work shows that the construct of "German culture" was not only defined by bourgeois high culture, but rather increasingly by factors from consumer culture. The imagery of advertising shaped national icons, created modified "surfaces" (for example, through illuminated ad media) and perceptions of space. Likewise, the logic of market differentiation and marketing began to determine social interactions as well as political communication (Hitler branding). This development did not progress without conflict: Debates surrounding both advertising as well as the direct confrontation between cultural critics and advertisers make clear that there was a massive collision between two mentalities. This allowed a conflict to emerge between traditional, guild thinking, high cultural representations and a putatively authentic aesthetics of content, on the one hand, and on the other hand, a "world of appearances" and aesthetic of the exterior form. One question in particular played a central role in this debate, namely: the extent to which capitalism, the market economy, consumption and the aesthetics of the modern Lebenswelt with its specific (commercial) texture were in accord with ideas of "Germanness."
; This is a monographic paper on the artist Theodor Schmuz-Baudiss. By tracing his biographic line, his complete life's works are illuminated. Born in Herrnhut, a village in Saxony, Schmuz-Baudiss grew up in a traditional religious family. He started his career in Munich at the Königliche Kunst-Gewerbeschule. After the exam he matriculated at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. In this epoch the leading style was historism and he also participated in the glorious exhibitions in the Münchener Glaspalast. However in 1896 he got in contact with the artists who worked for the magazine 'Jugend' and already in the same summer, he started to work with pottery and turned away from academicism and painting. Schmuz-Baudiss learned to work with clay on the pottery wheel and renounced exhibiting his paintings. The pottery activated all his creative energy, blending his own glazes, developing new techniques and building his own furnace, finding new styles. He was one of the early members of the Vereinigte Werkstätten München. Schmuz-Baudiss participated from the early beginning in the Art Nouveau movement with its strong orientation towards arts-and-craft, belonging to the group of artists of the European vanguard. In the following years Schmuz-Baudiss started experimenting with glass, embroidery, and furniture, he also began to design. Essentially influenced by Japanese and Chinese art and pottery he was also interested in Japanese coloured bronze. In experimenting with porcelain, Schmuz-Baudiss followed the ideas of the leading artists working in the porcelain manufacturers in Copenhagen and Stockholm as well as in East Asia. He exposed a complete porcelain set at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and won the silver medal. In February 1902 Schmuz-Baudiss was offered to work for the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin (KPM). Specialising in the painting under the glaze, he was expected to modernise the workshop for decoration in the royal institute. He was responsible for the innovation of new styles. His success during the following years, especially at the Universal Exhibition in Saint Louis/USA and in 1906 in Dresden, the German Emperor Wilhelm II offered him the chance to fill the position of art director of the manufacturer. Now his role changed. Schmuz-Baudiss was no longer mainly responsible for his own porcelain, he was from this point on responsible for the direction of the manufacturer at an artistic level and his own work was hard to distinguish from the necessities of the royal manufacturer. He indeed set aside his own designs and cared for the production of forms and decors. From the beginning on - in his vanguard attitude - he was in opposition to the Emperor's traditional and retro ideas of art. The monarch expected the celebration of Prussia to be a blaze of glory in means of historical styles. But on the contrary Schmuz-Baudiss was interested in the "Deutschen Werkbund" and in 1914 he initiated the cooperation of the Deutsche Werkbund with the royal manufacturer and exposed a profile of the production, but the exhibition was cut short because of the sudden beginning of World War I. - During the war Schmuz-Baudiss had to struggle hard for the survival of the manufacturer. After the end of World War I the German Emperor had to abdicate and Schmuz-Baudiss was, for the first time, free in his decision-making concerning the artistic orientation. However, the inflation, the grave economic situation and the destroyed reputation of Germany fraught the manufacturer with serious problems. Nevertheless Schmuz-Baudiss immediately contacted the best artists and designers for porcelain in this period. Schmuz-Baudiss also got in touch with artists of the 'Bauhaus' and again with the "Wiener Werkstätte" - to stay in connection with the international vanguard to overcome the German political isolation. Schmuz-Baudiss' own porcelain also changed. The round formats of his paintings were substituted by square forms and he removed himself from the derivative dependence to pretend to produce a plate - no, now it was a painting with the format of canvas. Also the themes changed - his new motifs were landscapes of mountains. He also created a new palette. His attitude towards nature turned out to be more radical - the loneliness of the human soul in front of the eternity and infinitude as well as the force and power of nature. Since 1902 Schmuz-Baudiss was mainly the one who was in charge of the royal manufacturer, but in September 1924 Schmuz-Baudiss requested to enter into his pension at the age of 64 and planned to move to southern Bavaria.
