Abstract. Socially shared regulation of learning (SSRL) has been recognized as a new and growing field in the framework of self-regulated learning theory in the past decade. In the present review, we examine the empirical evidence to support such a phenomenon. A total of 17 articles addressing SSRL were identified, 13 of which presented empirical evidence. Through a narrative review it could be concluded that there is enough data to maintain the existence of SSRL in comparison to other social regulation (e.g., co-regulation). It was found that most of the SSRL research has focused on characterizing phenomena through the use of mixed methods through qualitative data, mostly video-recorded observation data. Also, SSRL seems to contribute to students' performance. Finally, the article discusses the need for the field to move forward, exploring the best conditions to promote SSRL, clarifying whether SSRL is always the optimal form of collaboration, and identifying more aspects of groups' characteristics.

Recent research on motivation has taken a leading role in the study of learning and instruction. Theory-based studies carried out in real-life, dynamic, and interactive learning environments have attempted to bridge the gap between basic and applied psychological and educational research. Constructs and methodologies have been stretched to include new, innovative features, with motivation commonly conceptualized as a dual psychological and social phenomenon and researched using multiple methodological approaches in combination. This paper discusses the major challenges faced by researchers who are grappling with those issues.

This article describes the results of an analysis of three years' process-oriented interview data concerning secondary school students' goals and learning strategies in computer-supported collaborative inquiries. Specifically, the changes in students' goal interpretations and the situational dynamics of students' goals and strategies were investigated over 3 years. By examining how these secondary school students (N = 18, from ages 13-15 years) interpret and explain different situations in a new instructional setting, we were able to determine their subjective and context-specific explanations of the situation. The interview data were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis, and nonparametric statistics were then used to authenticate some of the qualitative findings. The data show how the students' explanations and interpretations of their goals and strategies vary during different years of the study. It can be concluded that the students seem to develop both individual and contextual goals, as well as strategies, to self-regulate in the new pedagogical culture.

AbstractThe paper presents an overview of challenges and demands related to teachers' digital skills and technology integration into educational content and processes. The paper raises a debate how technologies have created new skills gaps in pre-service and in-service teacher training and how that affected traditional forms of teacher education. Accordingly, it is discussed what interventions might be applicable to different contexts to address these challenges. It is argued that technologies should be viewed both as the field where new competences should be developed and at the same time as the method used in developing learning environments for teacher students.

This qualitative study explores the convergences of small groups' joint, positive interactions and regulation in social interaction during collaborative learning. We analyzed the video-recorded social interactions of five groups of student teachers during environmental science tasks. We examined the frequency and functions of the situations in which joint participation and positive socioemotional interaction converged with regulation (planning, monitoring, and evaluating) in social interaction. The results show that when groups planned, monitored, or evaluated their learning, they participated more jointly in social interaction and showed more socioemotional support than in interactions with no observed regulation. The situations in which these elements converged served three functions: establishing agreement, responding to challenges or mistakes, and discussing strengths and weaknesses. The results suggest that the convergences of joint, positive interactions and regulation in social interaction can serve a function that is meaningful for collaborative learning progress.

This article presents a case study that investigated primary school students' social interaction while working in small groups in science. The aim was to identify what characterizes and triggers students' efficacious interaction in collaborative learning situations. This was done by exploring and analyzing students' and groups' task involvement and the quality of their activity. The micro-level analysis proceeded first by identifying episodes of group task involvement and evaluating the quality of these interaction episodes. Next, the transitions between episodes were explored by identifying what triggered the shifts between task involvement levels. Ten hours of video observation data captured fourth-grade students, aged 9 to 10, in two groups of 3 students studying "the vital conditions of life" for 5 weeks. The main findings indicated that efficacious interaction demanded collaboration between group members and required active participation and productive on-task working. Three types of triggers were found to cause changes in students' activity, of which the group progress trigger was the most powerful for increasing, and the contextual trigger the most powerful for decreasing the activity. These findings shed light on certain aspects of efficacious interaction that will help us to identify details of efficacious interaction in future studies.

This study explored sequential patterns in social interaction states for group-level regulation of learning during collaborative learning. The participants were secondary school students ( N = 92) performing collaborative physics tasks. The videotaped sessions were analyzed regarding participation, social interaction, and group-level regulation types of co- and socially shared regulation. The results show that group-level regulation emerged most frequently in social interaction state that included cognitive and socioemotional interaction and whole-group participation, which also led to and followed regulation most frequently. The findings highlight the role of joint participation in social interactions for regulation of learning in collaborative group settings.

They may even run the risk of hindering the constructive exchange of ideas and provoking disputes and negative encounters. In this squib, we argue that the field of CSCL is failing to address this risk, because our research efforts are far too scattered and siloed. We introduce a manifesto of social sensitivity: increasing interdisciplinary efforts to enhance constructively critical, respectful, and cohesive collaborations in technology-supported environments. We call for concrete actions in CSCL research that ultimately contribute to more democratic and equitable collaborations.
