Die öffentliche und auch die wissenschaftliche Debatte über die Beziehungen zwischen massenmedialer Berichterstattung und politischem Verhalten tendiert zur Überbetonung negativer Aspekte. Untersuchungen haben ergeben, dass eine strategische Berichterstattung, die sich mehr auf die Motive und den Stil von Politikern als auf politische Inhalte konzentriert, politischen Zynismus begünstigt. Dies bezeichnet man mit dem Begriff "Zynismusspirale". Die vorliegende Untersuchung, die eine repräsentative Umfrage und eine Inhaltsanalyse der Medienberichterstattung in zwei Ländern (Niederlande und Dänemark) miteinander kombiniert, setzt sich mit diesem Ansatz auseinander. Die negativen Effekte von Nachrichten im Sinne von Zynismus entsprechen dem Grad der strategischen Berichterstattung. Überdies korreliert politische Raffinesse positiv mit Zynismus, was zu der Annahme führt, dass Zynismus vielleicht wenig mehr ist als ein Hinweis auf eine "interessierte und kritische Bürgerschaft". Bei der abschließenden Auswertung der Annahme, dass sich Zynismus negativ auf die politische Partizipation auswirkt, erweist es sich, dass tatsächlich wenig empirische Anhaltspunkte dafür vorliegen, dass es einen Zusammenhang zwischen Zynismus und Wahlverhalten gibt. Nach dem bisherigen Forschungsstand war die Wahlberichterstattung der europäischen öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten immer sehr vorsichtig und reaktiv und orientierte sich an den offiziellen Parteiprogrammen. Mit Hilfe von Interviews, teilnehmender Beobachtung in Redaktionen und inhaltsanalytischen Indikatoren wurde die Wahlbericherstattung der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten in den Niederlanden bei den nationalen Wahlen im Jahre 1998 und der Europawahl 1999 untersucht. Die Beobachtung und die Befragung von Reportern und Redakteuren kam zu dem Ergebnis, dass der Ansatz der Wahlberichterstattung in zunehmendem Maße proaktiv und selektiv wird. Die Analysen zeigten, dass beide Wahlen ähnlich angegangen wurden, aber mit unterschiedlicher Priorität in den Nachrichtensendungen. Die Inhaltsanalyse ergab eine quantitative Abnahme der Wahlberichterstattung, wobei die Berichte sich aber im Vergleich zu früheren Wahlen eines mehr analytischen und journalistisch interpretativen Ansatzes befleißigten. Die Implikationen der Untersuchungsergebnisse werden im Lichte des Wandels der politischen Kommunikation im allgemeinen und der sich verschärfenden Wettbewerbssituation, in der die öffentlichrechtlichen Anstalten operieren, erörtert. "This paper reviews research on the role of communication in political socialization. Starting from a basic definition the impact of different agents (family, peers, school, mass media) and communicative processes (interpersonal vs. mass communication) on various outcomes of political socialization (i.e. political knowledge, norms and values, attitudes, participation) is discussed. It is argued that research has amply demonstrated the role of media and communication as agents of socialization. However, the paper highlights that changes in parental generations, the media landscape, and in adolescents themselves provide good reason to revisit questions of how communication impacts how adolescents develop into citizens in democratic societies. Finally, the chapter addresses several aspects that researchers should consider in their future work on political socialization." (publisher's description)

Abstract.  This study investigates how the information environment in the Danish 2000 euro referendum campaign served to crystallize opinion on the issue within the context of a number of other hypothesized influences on the vote, based on previous studies of referendum voting. Our data include a nationally representative two‐wave panel survey and a content analysis of news coverage during the referendum campaign. We develop a weighted measure of exposure to news on public and private television channels, that takes into account the volume and tone of the coverage towards the YES and NO campaigns, and using this we find that exposure to public television news significantly influences vote choice when controlling for other predictors. We also find varied levels of support for hypotheses concerning the influence of other key variables such as ideology, economic evaluations, government approval and issue‐specific contextual variables. The findings emphasize the importance of considering the information environment during referendum campaigns.

The authors define key characteristics of referendums, touch upon participation in and popular support for referendums, and highlight the differences between them and presidential or parliamentary elections for political actors, the media, and citizens. Furthermore, they discuss findings regarding media effects on issue salience, issue understanding, turnout, and voting behavior. The authors argue that the potential for communication and campaign effects on citizens is generally larger in a referendum campaign than in other electoral contests. This multi-methodological study examined the news framing of the 2004 European Union enlargement in terms of risk and opportunity and the effect both frames had on public support for the enlargement. A content analysis showed that EU enlargement was portrayed as a controversial issue, but with an overall balanced tone of coverage. Risk and opportunity framing played an equally prominent role in the news. An experiment examined the impact of both frames on support for EU enlargement. Participants in the opportunity frame condition showed significantly higher levels of support compared to participants in the risk condition. This framing effect was moderated by political knowledge. Individuals with low levels of political knowledge were more affected by the news frames and more susceptible to risk framing.

This study tests competing hypotheses about public support for European integration and projects referendum voting behaviour. It emphasizes anti-immigration sentiments as a key variable for understanding reluctance about integration. Drawing on survey data, it is shown that anti-immigration sentiments, economic considerations and the evaluation of domestic governments are the strongest predictors of both attitudinal support for integration and individuals' propensity to vote 'yes' in a referendum on the enlargement of the European Union (EU).

Methods to automatically analyze media content are advancing significantly. Among others, it has become increasingly popular to analyze the framing of news articles by means of statistical procedures. In this article, we investigate the conceptual validity of news frames that are inferred by a combination of k-means cluster analysis and automatic sentiment analysis. Furthermore, we test a way of improving statistical frame analysis such that revealed clusters of articles reflect the framing concept more closely. We do so by only using words from an article's title and lead and by excluding named entities and words with a certain part of speech from the analysis. To validate revealed frames, we manually analyze samples of articles from the extracted clusters. Findings of our tests indicate that when following the proposed feature selection approach, the resulting clusters more accurately discriminate between articles with a different framing. We discuss the methodological and theoretical implications of our findings.

The 2014 European Parliament (EP) elections were held after a period where public opinion about the EU changed significantly. In this paper we investigate evaluations of the performance of the European Union, as this dimension of EU attitudes is particularly relevant ahead of elections. We look at public opinion developments since 2009 and then zoom in on the role played by the news media in shaping public opinion about EU performance by linking citizens' evaluations across time to the news media content they were exposed to. The article relies on original multiple wave survey panel data and a systematic media content analysis in the Netherlands. It shows how public opinion has changed, how it changes around EP elections, and how exposure to media coverage can help improve citizens' evaluations of EU performance. (author's abstract)

Die Studie untersucht, ob Fernsehberichte unterschiedlich bewertet bzw. erinnert werden, je nachdem ob sie live oder nichtlive ausgestrahlt werden. Ein Sample von 161 nach dem Zufallsverfahren ausgewählten Erwachsenen nahm an einem Experiment teil, bei dem die Auswirkungen der unterschiedlichen Sendeformate (Live-Schaltgespräch zwischen verschiedenen Reportern einerseits und eine aufgezeichnete Reportage andererseits) getestet werden sollten. Das Experiment wurde mit Hilfe eines originalen Nachrichtenbulletins, das in Kooperation mit der niederländischen öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalt NOS entwickelt wurde, ausgewertet und konnte die These, dass das Liveformat bevorzugt und besser erinnert wird, nicht bestätigen. Die Ergebnisse ergaben im Gegenteil, das man sich an das nichtlive gesendete Reportageformat besser erinnern konnte. Damit wird die in den aktuellen Redaktionen vorherrschende Meinung über die Attraktivität von Liveberichterstattung in Frage gestellt mit praktischen Folgen sowohl für die journalistische Praxis als auch die Handelnden in der politischen Arena.
