Abstract
One of the questions most consistently debated by analysts of the current state of economic and business progress in Pacific Asia is: 'Will the large ethnic Chinese business groups of the region make the transition to professional management and become multinationals?'. The author attempts to answer this question by considering the nature of the 'contest' for Asia, the extent and characteristics of Chinese capitalism, the derivation of alternative systems of capitalism, and the Chinese case and Chinese culture and the institutional context of modernization.
