Chinese intellectuals and the United States: The dilemma of individualism vs. patriotism
In: Asian survey: a bimonthly review of contemporary Asian affairs, Band 29, Heft 7, S. 645-654
Abstract
Since the mid-nineteenth century, two groups of Chinese of different social status have crossed the Pacific to go to the USA. The former group consisted of Chinese manual labourers who went to America to work during the gold rush period, and the latter group was formed by Chinese students who had been selected by the Qing dynasty for study abroad (starting in 1872). In the history of Sino-American relations, the experiences and impact of both these groups of Chinese have provided many interesting topics for concerned scholars to study. The article offers a preliminary analysis of the second group, focusing mainly on mainland Chinese intellectuals. (DÜI-Sen)
