Abstract

The transition from state socialism to democracy has resulted in the disappearance of the duality of political socialisation in post-Communist Hungary. According to the results ofthe empirical research, attempts to restore the duality of official and private spheres of political socialisation have failed. Children of the transition period coped well with pluralism and proved to be able to orientate themselves among various interpretations of ideological, religious and political categories. The disappearance of ideological constraints, however, has not changed the decisive role of the family and social structures in the political socialisation of children of post-Communism, who have lost the paradise of the equality of subjectsof the state and are now faced with the challanges stemming from the role of citizenship in a democratic republic.
