Every month tons of green tea travel from China to West Africa in a movement that largely thrives beyond the attention of Western observers. In this trade, Malian merchants assumed a central role. They travel to China, visit family gardens and the factories, which process and package the product. Together with their Chinese suppliers, they select the tea leaves and create their brand. On Bamako's largest market, the Grand Marché, more than a hundred different tea brands are found, whose packages have colourfully, often eye-catching designs with brand-names such as Gazelle, Tombouctou, Arafat and Obama. This book explores the unique tea culture that celebrates with its brands the strength of desert animals, the fading glory of trading places, the excitement of social events and the accomplishments of admired politicians

Abstract
Cameroon's music sector has been reinvigorated by a new generation of musicians and by locally created and international streaming platforms. Arguing that these streaming platforms have the potential to mitigate the music industry piracy crisis of the 1990s and 2000s, this article examines the recent developments on the Cameroonian music market, the positions of the various stakeholders in the music business, the twenty-first-century copyright legislation concerning music in Cameroon and users' and musicians' perception of the platforms. It shows how the crisis arose due to the accessibility of digital gadgets that facilitated practices of copying and sharing that drove music producers into bankruptcy. Although in their daily lives users still prefer to listen to free music, as many have difficulties to afford paying for music streaming, this article argues that in the long run the streaming platforms, if they succeed in persuading users to pay for renting music, will turn out to be more efficient in mitigating informal music-sharing than copyright law and prosecuting the so-called 'pirates' in court.

The paper offers insights from ethnographic research that reach beyond general assumptions of the working of globalization, especially in the Global South. It examines the ways in which the arrival of products made in China, namely green tea, has influenced the everyday of people in Mali, modifying consumption practices and the business landscape. Chinese green tea, which is known in the Sahel countries of West Africa since the 19th century, has gradually found more and more consumers in Mali, so that from the 2000s onwards tons of green tea arrive every month in the country. Most Malians, the paper shows, consume green tea several times a day and identify with the beverage to such an extent that it has even become their national drink. The paper further shows how, in spite of concerns of product durability and health standard, other industrially manufactured Chinese commodities, too, have replaced locally-made products but, at the same time, enabled people to connect to a global lifestyle. In essence, the insights the paper provides from ethnographic research on the circulation of green tea deepen understanding of how Chinese commodities become culturally appropriated or integrated with local everyday practices.

"In den letzten Jahrzehnten sind vermehrt ethnologische Studien ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit gerückt, die nicht auf einem Zentrum-Peripherie-Modell oder auf einer ethnischen Gruppe als Untersuchungseinheit basieren, sondern zunehmend mobil und multilokal sind. Gleichzeitig haben Vorgänge der Verbreitung und der Mobilität von Menschen, Dingen, Ideen, Institutionen etc. an Bedeutung gewonnen. Dieser veränderte Fokus erfordert eine Erweiterung der ethnografischen Methoden. Dieser Aufsatz stellt einige der methodischen Implikationen eines Forschungsprojekts vor, dessen Ziel es war, die Verbreitungsgeschichten von Bünden im Cross River-Gebiet von Kamerun und Nigeria nachzuzeichnen. Die meisten Bünde werden dort als immaterielles Eigentum gehandelt und verbreiten sich durch Kauf und Verkauf von Dorf zu Dorf, ungeachtet sprachlicher Grenzen. Einige der Bünde schaffen auf diese Weise neue, imaginierte Gemeinschaften von Besitzern derselben Bünde. Die Synthese der Einzelgeschichten in den untersuchten Ortschaften ermöglichte die Rekonstruktion einer so entstandenen Bundlandschaft. Die Studie ging somit nicht von einem lokalen Standpunkt aus, sondern vom Untersuchungsgegenstand im Prozess seiner Verbreitung durch ihre jeweiligen Besitzer. Der Vergleich der Orte legte zudem eine enge Verknüpfung der ökonomischen und politischen Situation einer Dorfgemeinschaft mit ihrer Bereitschaft zur Erinnerung und der Tradierung ihrer spezifischen Geschichte nahe." Am Beispiel des Ejagham-Stammes im tropischen Regenwald des Cross-River-Gebietes Kameruns und dem Cross-River-State im Südosten Nigerias befaßt sich der Beitrag mit den Frauen- und Männerbünden sowie deren Struktur und Funktion im Rahmen der Ejagham-Gesellschaft. Um die Verbreitung und regional unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen der Bünde und ihre Kunstgegenstände zu dokumentieren, wurden von der Autorin etwa zwei Drittel der Ejagham-Dörfer aufgesucht und mit den Dorfältesten standardisierte Interviews sowie mit Männern und Frauen informelle Gespräche durchgeführt. Der Schwerpunkt des Beitrags liegt auf dominanten und versteckten Diskursen innerhalb der Bünde, die für die Aufrechterhaltung der sozialen Ordnung zuständig sind. Anhand der kultischen Praxis der Männerbünde (Auftritt der Masken) und der Frauenbünde (Auftritt von ekpa atu) wird aufgezeigt, daß Frauenbünde nicht notwendigerweise ein Abbild von Männerbünden sein müssen, sondern daß die Institution der Frauenbünde gleichermaßen die Partizipation der Frauen an Macht und Autorität darstellt.
