Abstract

This is the second part of a two-part report on Romania's experience in coming to terms with its communist past. Part I (published as Bericht des BIOst Nr. 3/1998) was concerned with the period 1990- 1995/1996 during which Ion Iliescu was Romanian leader. Since the end of 1996, however, Romania has a new leadership - the first democratically elected one since 1937! One of the actions of the new leadership has been to take a fresh approach to the country's history. As a result, new opportunities have emerged for confronting the past and some progress has been made. This new approach to Romania's past forms the subject of the present report. As in Part 1, its analysis is based on generally accessible sources that are chiefly of Romanian origin. (BIOst-Dok)
